Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01/19/10
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, January 19, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The New York Times has been considering moving back to a pay model for its website and is now leaning toward a Financial Times-style metered pay system, according to New York Magazine. A content deal could also be in the works for the long-rumored Apple tablet device, the piece suggests. Furthermore, Harper Collins is in talks with Apple to license its content for the device, per the WSJ. However analysts are still highly doubtful that a pay model is going to work for online consumer publications. A poll released by Harris Interactive last week found that 77% of online adults would not be willing to pay anything to read a newspaper’s content online. Among those willing to pay, about 19% would only pay between $1 and $10 a month and only 5% would pay more than $10 a month.
Speaking of said tablet, Apple sent out psychedelic-colored invitations to “Come See Our Latest Creation” at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on Jan. 27.
Amazon announced that it is opening up the self service Kindle Digital Text Platform to enable authors and publishers to publish Kindle books in multiple languages including English, German and French.
The first couple of episodes of Starz’ latest original production, the blood-soaked Spartacus: Blood and Sand, is begin offered for free via on demand across Charter, Comcast, Cox, Insight, Mediacom, Wow and DirecTV households, beginning Jan. 20 (two days before the series premieres on Starz.) Comcast’s Fancast portal and Starz.com will also stream the first two full-episodes on Jan. 20 and Jan. 27, respectively, while iTunes will make the first two full episodes available for download on Jan. 22 and Jan. 29, respectively. If that’s not enough, Starz Digital Media and Double Barrel Motion Labs have produced a four-part “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” motion comic series based on the show. The first three installments are available now for purchase on the Amazon, iTunes, PlayStation Network and the Xbox LIVE platforms. Digital versions of the “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” official comic book print series are also available for purchase on iTunes through various iPhone applications, including the newly launched Graphic.ly digital content delivery platform.
HD Yoga-themed lifestyle network BE has announced that it will begin distributing its first original production, “A Moment of Wellness”, to local TV stations, websites, and mobile carriers at the upcoming NATPE 2010 conference in Las Vegas. The company has also named James Abee as VP/Programming of the new multiplatform lifestyle network.

In an effort to enable basic interactivity in both newer and legacy set-top boxes, Zodiac Interactive announced that its EBIF-formatted player is successfully operating using applications from multiple vendors and development environments within the cable iTV ecosystem, including NDS for addressable EBIF-based interactive ads to individual Cisco/Scientific Atlanta set-tops. Zodiac says that its player/agent will be deployed next year by several Top 10 N. American MSOs, who are finally gearing up for commercial iTV deployments under the Canoe initiative. Planned applications include T-Commerce, addressable, targeted advertising and TV widgets – featuring such functionality as voting, polling, click-to-call, caller ID, movie guides and local search.
Global revenues of connected TVs will reach $29.3 billion in 2011 according to a new report from IMS Research, issued just after the TV app-laden CES wrapped. Broadband TV sales will account for 58% of global revenues of internet TV equipment in 2011. Although many TV manufacturers have committed to manufacturing at least 25%-30% of their TV product lines with connectivity in 2010, IMS Research forecasts that only 12.5% of 2010 global TVs shipped will have connectivity due to lagging sales of current models caused by the slow economy.

In more Spartacus news, Starz Media has teemed with Artificial Life on an iPhone game around the show. Not for the squeamish, the $4.99 Spartacus: Blood and Sand game features some intense 3D first person battle sequences (amazing for such a small screen, actually.) The game is the second released by Starz and Artificial Life, following the Pandorum game last Sept.
Chinese language internet search provider Baidu announced that Chief Technology Officer Yinan Li has resigned from the company for personal reasons.
Online video ad network Tremor Media has hired Carrie Hamerslag as a Regional Sales Manager, based in New York. Carrie has spent the last year at Nabbr.com as an Account Executive.
Cable programming start-up The Ski Channel has launched a dynamic new online Resort Rater app that enables skiers to choose from dozens of criteria when planning a ski trip. The interface allows you to search by considering multiple factors including weather and snow conditions, proximity to airports, food, nightlife and additional adventurous activities. One of the cooler features are the “Insider Tips” embedded within the recommendations from Ski Channel regulars such as Mike Douglas. It’s interesting to see a nascent network put such effort into an interactive application that can live on so many platforms. The network is planning to devote over $1 million of its commercial load to promoting the app and will add additional features in the future including resort cams and on site travel purchasing, according to Ski Channel CEO Steve Bellamy. The trick will be to get in out there on as many devices as possible.
