Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 17, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Don’t count out Hulu when discussing the latest trend of original television content being produced solely for online audiences (see: Netflix, YouTube, Yahoo!). The website has announced that it’s not only bringing back Morgan Spurlock’s A Day in the Life documentary series for a new round of 10 episodes, but will also produce and launch two new original programs: Battleground, a scripted show that will debut on Feb. 14; and Up to Speed, a six-part documentary from filmmaker Richard Linklater that will be released sometime later this year. Battleground will be a half-hour political comedy and will run for 13 episodes in its first season on the website. According to what Hulu’s senior vice president of content says, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, the show’s budget will be very similar to ones for programs on cable television. The programming will be available for users of both the free and paid model.
Hulu wasn’t the only online video content provider talking a big game last week. In a speech at CES, YouTube‘s global head of partnerships, Robert Kyncl, predicted that, within the next 10 years, 75% of all channels, including TV channels, will be created online, effectively setting up the web as the premier channel for the distribution of entertainment content. The prediction was made in a speech that spotlighted the online video site’s oft-discussed original programming initiative with a bevy of content creators.
While on that topic, PMC (the digital media company behind Deadline.com, TVLine.com and Movieline.com) and ION Television have announced that their joint entertainment news venture, Entertainment News Television (ENTV), will have its own premium channel on YouTube. ENTV will provide their audience a mixture of 24/7 breaking news and entertainment lifestyle shows on the platform. All of the content, including the multiple daily news segments, celebrity interviews and news chat shows, as well as a weekly program with TVLine editor-in-chief Michael Ausiello, will be produced by Michael Davis, general manager and executive producer of ENTV.
Marketing communications brand JWT launched a new digital web series, available via its official YouTube channel, last week during the 2012 International CES. The series, called WorldMakers, focuses on interviews with key executives and players discussing the increasingly intertwined roles of advertising, technology and entertainment. Among the first to be interviewed for the series included Facebook VP of global solutions, Carolyn Everson, and global CMO of Unilever, Keith Weed. The series is hosted by JWT Worldwide CEO and chairman, Bob Jeffrey.
U.K.-based online video advertising startup Brainient has raised $1.8 million in funding, led by Credo Ventures, additional funds from Atlas Venture and Estag Capital, as well as contributions from existing investor 500 Startups, reports TechCrunch Europe. The money will be directed toward expanding the company’s client services and technology teams, which also means the expansion of the company’s London and Bucharest offices, along with opening a new office in New York. Brainient’s client partnerships have included Samsung, Canon and Volvo.
AT&T might have its sights set on SeaChange International’s recently launched Infusion platform, which allows clients to insert dynamic ads into on-demand and live video content delivered to set-top boxes, tablets, computers and smartphones, reports Light Reading Cable. AT&T currently uses SeaChange’s Spot ad-insertion scheduler for U-Verse TV’s linear channels. According to the report, Infusion integrates the Spot service with AdPulse, a video-on-demand advertising platform. No confirmations were officially given by either company as to if or when AT&T would test out or deploy Infusion.
Possibly lost in the hubbub of the Obama Administration coming out against the much-maligned Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), is the news that the controversial bill will no longer require internet service providers to block international websites accused of piracy. According to the report from CNET, one of the biggest proponents of the bill, Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, has said he plans to remove the Domain Name System provision from the proposed bill. It is a big blow to SOPA, which is backed by Hollywood studios and other big copyright owners, and which sought to essentially eradicate any website that featured or allowed access to pirated online content. The bill has received heavy opposition from web companies and the tech industry overall, with many critics labeling the bill antithetical to free speech on the internet.
The Hulu news isn’t over. In a blog post published by CEO Jason Kilar, Hulu announced important numbers for 2011, as well as some projections for 2012. In 2011, Hulu’s revenue grew 60% from 2010 to approximately $420 million. The total is a result from a combination of digital ad revenue and money generated from Hulu Plus. In fact, Hulu Plus now boasts more than 1.5 million paying subscribers, and is attracting more than two times the number of subscribers each day when compared to last year. Later this year, Kilar says that Hulu expects its subscription services to account for half of its overall business. In terms of content, Hulu expanded its available offering by 40% from 2010; Hulu Plus’ content offering, specifically, grew 105%. Finally, the company also announced that it has now served over 1,000 brand advertisers through its digital advertising service. Hulu plans to invest almost half a billion dollars toward content in 2012.
Amazon moved 3.9 million Kindle Fires in the last three months of 2011, coming in a very distant second behind Apple’s iPad (18.6 million) in terms of total shipments, according to the latest data from global market research firm IHS iSuppli, as reported by eMarketer. The positive news for Amazon coincides with positive news for the tablet market in general. iSuppli’s data also finds that tablet shipments reached 65 million in 2011, and are expected to hit 287 million units by 2015. iSuppli’s data doesn’t match up entirely with that of Barclays Capital, which estimated earlier this month that the Kindle Fire’s fourth quarter shipment total had reached 5.5 million. However, Barclays also projects strong growth for the Fire both in terms of shipments (18.4 million) and revenues from content ($1 billion) in 2012.
Production on the iPad 3 is underway, reports Bloomberg. Slated to be launched in March, the new tablet will feature an HD screen and will use a quad-core chip, which enables faster activity such as transitioning faster from one app to the next, said sources cited by the report. The device will also be compatible with the faster LTE wireless network, which is being rolled out by wireless carriers like AT&T and Verizon in order to facilitate user access to data.
VentureBeat has announced two new editorial appointments. Ben Popper, founding editor of Betabeat, will join the company in the position of East Coast Editor of VentureBeat. David Hsu, co-founder of Bitmob.com, will come on board as the new Editor-in-Chief of VentureBeat’s games-focused channel, GamesBeat. Popper will be responsible for covering tech industry news in New York, as well as lead an expansion that VentureBeat has planned for the Big Apple over the next two years. Hsu will oversee the upcoming GamesBeat expansion as the channel will also integrate Bitmob.com’s content and community of users into the new offering.

Vodio delivers customized video recommendations straight to your iPad. The free app allows you to create personalized video channels based on the topics you are interested in (i.e. Comedy, Movies, Music, Sports, News, Science, and so on and so forth), and even lets you break some selected channels down further into sub-categories. Furthermore, the app delivers video content shared by your friends and family on Facebook and Twitter (provided that you allow the app access to your social profiles). And that’s not all; the iPad app also offers content from various different sources, including TV shows, channels, popular websites and organizations. It’s a very intuitive app that takes into account your personal preferences and viewing history. So far, I’ve been enjoying it, check it out if you need something to stop you from spending hours and hours and hours on YouTube.
