CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

01/17/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 17, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Late last night, the new was Iran banned CNN from operating in the country yesterday after the network reportedly misquoted Iranian president last weekend as saying Iran was interested in building nuclear weapons.  Iran says he was actually speaking about the country’s right to have nuclear energy.  Although CNN did admit its mistake and apologize, Iran’s Ministry of Culture & Islamic Guidance is keeping the ban until further notice.  As of an hour ago, reports are coming in that Iran has lifted the ban.

Perhaps because of the Iran issue, CNN missed this quirky little time zone issue — when they announced the Golden Globes winners at 11:16p last night, it was only 8:16p in the pacific time zone and only 16 minutes into the primetime show.  Daggnabbit.

Tonight’s Premieres:
CBS
      Love Monkey at 10p
FOX       American Idol [part 1] at 8p

*MORE GOOD STUFF*CNN Headline News will add a new face to its primetime lineup – Glenn Beck will host his own 60-minute show.  According to Variety, the show is expected to launch in April, though a time period has not been nailed down yet.  If you’re not familiar with him, for the past five years Beck has hosted his own talk radio show, currently available on more than 200 stations nationwide.

Huff will make its second season debut on Showtime on April 1 at 10p.  If you’re wondering what will happen with The L Word which currently airs in that time period, that show will have its season finale the previous week.

NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution has re-signed Jerry Springer with a multi-year deal, taking him through the 2006-07 television season and beyond.  He has already been cleared in 85% of the country for next year.

Oxygen has finalized a multi-year carriage deal with the DISH Network, giving Oxygen 12 million new viewers, and with the new DISH subscribers, a total base of 65 million homes. DISH will begin carrying Oxygen immediately.

CBS will go ahead with a second season of Rock Star from Mark Burnett Prods, with David Navarro and Brooke Burke returning as hosts, says Variety.  Last season the band INXS was looking to replace a member, and used this contest to find that replacement.  What the ultimate role will be for the winner this summer has yet to be revealed, but the finding of a new rock star will still be the point.  Last summer Rock Star averaged a 3.1/8 A18-49 on Tuesday nights.

Starz will add two classic favorites to its Encore Westerns channel this calendar year.  Chuck Connors stars in The Rifleman starting in December; but if you can’t wait that long, Stuart Whitman stars in Cimarron Strip starting this July.  Both shows will have a hosted segment with their respective stars talking about their shows, their fellow actors and their lives in Hollywood during the time the shows were filmed.

The show aired only once, and now Variety reports production has been shut down on ABC’s Emily’s Reasons Why Not.  Apparently  nobody could find enough reasons why to keep the show moving.  In its opening night just a week ago last Monday, the show average a very soft 2.8/7, ranking 4th at 9p. This week it was preempted for the Golden Globes. Depending on how the repeat of The Bachelor did last night, that could seal Emily’s fate.

Cynopsis Question of the week: If you are attending the NATPE convention next week in Las Vegas as an attendee (not an exhibitor), what do you hope to get out of it?  Buying a couple of new shows; making new contacts; conferring with your fellow wizards?  Email us here, put NATPE QUESTION in the subject line, we’ll tally up your responses and get back to you on Thursday.

And the top Golden Globe award winners were:
Best Picture:  Brokeback Mountain
Best TV Series (Drama):  Lost (ABC)
Best Actress in a Drama:  Geena Davis in Commander in Chief (ABC)
Best Actor in a Drama:  Hugh Laurie, House (FOX)
Best TV Series (Comedy or Musical):  Desperate Housewives (ABC)
Best Actress in a Comedy:  Mary-Louise Parker in Weeds (Showtime)
Best Actor in a Comedy:  Steve Carell, The Office (NBC)

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Fox has ordered up two new pilots:

  • 13 Graves from 20th Century Fox TV begins with a retired treasure hunter in search of his missing brother. That search takes him on a quest to find Incan Gold, hidden by Spanish conquistador Fransisco Pizarro, and hidden under 13 different graves on US soil.  (Sounds a little like a Clive Cussler novel, eh?)
  • Southern Comfort from 20th is about a mobster’s wife who takes over her husband’s business while he spends a little R&R time in prison. This project is from brothers Joe and Tony Gayton.

UPN has ordered up a pilot of Palm Springs from Kevin Williamson, Lionsgate and Touchstone.  True to Williamson’s past shows (Dawson’s Creek among others), this show is a primetime soap centered around teens.  A family with their teenage son move to a new gated development in Palm Springs, and there he finds other teens and of course a mystery or two.

ABC has ordered a pilot of Drift from Touchstone, about a NYC detective who suffers from insomnia following the sudden death of his daughter.  The lack of sleep leaves him to hallucinate his daughter is with him while he’s investigating crime scenes. This project is from writer John Glenn.

WB: TCA Update

  • The WB has ordered a comedy pilot script that will be penned by Ellen DeGeneres and her brother Vance DeGeneres.  The storyline is about a family from two very different perspectives — the human family members, and the animal family members.  Ellen will voice the family dog.
  • A new reality series is in the offing at the WB called Survival of the Richest – set to debut this summer.  This show takes seven of the wealthiest of the wealthy and pairs them with seven who are wealthy in debt.  In pairs, they will live together and compete in a variety of challenges, ultimately designed to illustrate how the other half lives and walk for a while in another’s shoes.  The weekly elimination will end up with one winning team who will walk away with a large cash prize. The show will be hosted by Queer as Folk’s Hal Sparks, and is produced by RDF Media and Seven.

 * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Steve Margosian has been named VP/OLN Marketing Solutions, Comcast Networks. In this role, Steve will be responsible for creating marketing-driven opportunities with advertisers and agencies.

* RATINGS *Sunday — A18-49 Analysis: Fox hands down owned Sunday night, partly due to the NFL Division Playoff game which ran an hour and 13 minutes into primetime and partly due to the two hours of the premiere of 24, which aired from 8:13-10:13p.  Overall from 7-10p, Fox earned a 9.2/21 for the night among A18-49, according to fast affiliate Live + Same Day ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  ABC was the only other network in the game, delivering a 7.0/16 for its night of original programming.  At 7p, the runover on Fox scored a 12.4/31 (7-8p). For its first hour of 24 from 8:13-9:13p, Fox earned a 7.3 rating in the key adult demo, that show’s highest rating ever in demo.  For it’s second hour (9:13-10:13p), Fox earned a 6.7 rating, giving a combined 2-hour premiere a rating of 7.0 A18-49.  Meanwhile, on ABC, part 2 of EM: Home Edition at 8p pumped up from its first hour (3.5/9) to a 6.4/14.  And ABC had the #1 spot for the remainder of the evening:  Desperate Housewives 9.5/20, and Grey’s Anatomy 8.6/20.
