Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 15, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

One of sports’ worst kept secrets was finally made official yesterday as Rory McIlroy formally announced that he is now representing team Nike. The multi-year deal is reportedly valued around $20 million a year and pumps some new life into the Nike Golf brand which had previously been anchored by Tiger Woods. The partnership with McIlroy was announced in a ceremony in the United Arab Emirates ahead of this week’s Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. Nike will begin airing a new commercial featuring McIlroy and Woods on Wednesday dubbed, ”No Cup is Safe” and featured the two athletes competing with trick shots.

On the Air

CBS’s coverage of the Patriots easy win over the Texans on Sunday delivered a 23.8 score in Nielsen’s overnight ratings. That is off-pace from last year’s monster Giants/Packers game airing in the same timeslot. Meanwhile, FOX benefitted from the last second Falcons victory with an 18.7 overnight number, up 3% over the 2012 comparable early game

Lance Armstrong confessed to Oprah Winfrey during an interview Monday that he used performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France, according to the AP. The interview will be broadcast Thursday on OWN. The interview was called “emotional at times,” according to the report. After the interview, Winfrey tweeted: “Just wrapped with @lancearmstrong More than 2 1/2 hours. He came READY!”

Saturday’s matchup of two top ten teams on BTN in Indiana and Minnesota scored as the highest-rated regular-season basketball game in network history, according to Nielsen metered market numbers. The game drew a program average household rating of 2.08 across the network’s eight metered markets and was the top-rated cable program Saturday in both Indianapolis and Minneapolis.

ESPN inked a multiyear, multimedia agreement with World Baseball Classic, Inc. to showcase the World Baseball Classic in Spanish for both 2013 and 2017. Coverage includes exclusive Spanish-language rights, audio rights and extensive coverage across ESPN’s studio programming and digital platforms with ESPN Deportes serving as the Spanish-language home for both events, with live telecasts of all 39 games beginning with the three opening games on Saturday, March 2.

Universal Sports Network and USA Swimming extended their relationship, inking a deal to air USA Swimming events in the U.S. through 2016. The agreement hands Universal Sports exclusive multiplatform rights to the annual Arena Grand Prix Series as well as rights to other USA Swimming Grand Prix competitions.

The PGA Tour is entering a content agreement with kids’ sports programming platform The Whistle. The deal will make the PGA Tour a stakeholder, with programming developed by both parties that will be co-distributed via The Whistle channels and the PGA Tour’s media platforms.

USA Network is partnering with the NFL to produce the 2nd annual NFL Characters Unite documentary that will debut the week after the Super Bowl on Feb. 8 at 7p. The film will be part of USA’s Characters Unite public service campaign to combat prejudice and discrimination, and feature Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, who all share their personal stories.

Heading into the start of the NHL season, MSG Network will telecast Rangers Training Camp Live, a two-hour look-in at the team’s training camp session from the MSG Training Center, on Wednesday, January 16 starting at 11a. The special will be hosted by Al Trautwig, and feature interviews with players and coaches with analysis from MSG’s Rangers experts. The next night at 8p, MSG’s weekly comprehensive hockey show Hockey Night Live will make its season debut.

The U.S. Army Reserve Employer Partnership Office is launching a military-friendly apprenticeship program with MLB Network that will provide two members of the Army Reserve work experience at the channel. Under this one-year paid apprenticeship program created by the USAR and MLB Network, Spc. Christopher Tobey and Sgt. Dennis DePrisco will use their military and civilian skill sets to work in MLB Network’s Creative Services and Studio Operations Departments. The program was helped formed by the Sports Video Group’s Veteran in Production initiative.

Sponsorship & Promotion

The NBA and Sears locked in an agreement that will make Sears the title sponsor of Shooting Stars, a specialty shooting competition during State Farm All-Star Saturday Night. Sears will give its Shop Your Way members the chance to participate in unique experiences throughout NBA All-Star 2013. As part of the agreement, Sears will have prominent exposure onsite in Houston and during the primetime broadcast on TNT as well as a dedicated Sears-branded area at NBA All-Star Jam Session where fans will have a chance to interact with NBA players and legends.

Under Armour signed professional golfer Jordan Spieth to join the brand’s roster. The 2011-2012 Big 12 Player of the Year and first-team All-American will be included in a national advertising and in-store campaign starting this year.

The Cleveland Browns off-season overhaul will include more than coaches and front office executives. The Cleveland Plain-dealer reports that the team is locking in a deal with FirstEnergy Corp. for naming rights to the stadium.

NASCAR and Featherlite Trailers are extending their partnership. The six-year extension will keep Featherlite Trailers as the Official Trailer of NASCAR through 2018.

North American Sports Group has brought in presenting sponsors Jif To Go, Little Bites, Kids Clif Bar, GoGo Squeeze and Frido Cheese Heads for its Kick It 3v3 National Championship XII hosted at The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort on January 19-21, 2013.

Digital Fields

With games set to begin on Saturday, the NHL announced that its live-game streaming service NHL GameCenter Live will be available for $49.99 for the shortened season. In addition, the league is improving its NHL GameCenter app to allow for more free video for users, including post-game video highlights, a live-game simulation with real-time shift changes and play-by-play.

NASCAR and HP unveiled the new NASCAR Fan and Media Engagement Center presented by HP, designed to offer “a cutting-edge technology platform that facilitates near real-time response and analytics of traditional, digital and social media.” The center serves as a showpiece on the 8th floor of NASCAR Plaza with features that include all-glass walls, a monitor bank of 13 47-inch HP displays, and the latest in touchscreen and AV technology.
