Good morning, it’s Tuesday, January 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

MySpace reached an agreement with the attorneys general from 49 states and the District of Columbia to add new measures to combat s#xual predators and other felons who use the service to commit crimes. MySpace will implement new protections that will block known offending URLs from posting to the site, encourage users to report inappropriate conduct and provide better software tools to protect underage users. The Fox Interactive Media division will also create a new high school section to act as a safe haven for the under 18 crowd, allowing users to create profiles more mature members will be unable to view.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
NBA.com launched a new mobile platform dubbed “NBA 2 Go,” offering fans daily video highlights, news stories and customized information about their favorite teams and players. Fantasy players can set the application, developed with Hands-On Mobile, to receive real-time updates to track their players during games. The program is now available for download on NBA.com as well as HandsOn.com.
 
ESPN
will provide digital coverage of Major League Gaming‘s 2008 Pro Circuit video game competitions, providing exclusive streamed matches, interviews, scores and stats on ESPN.com and broadband network ESPN360.com. ESPN.com will also launch a competitive video gaming section replete with the latest news, information and video as it relates to competitive gaming.
 
IFC Entertainment unveiled a new Festival Direct on demand service, offering viewings of independent features that have premiered at major film festivals including Cannes, Toronto, Venice and Telluride. The films will be available via Cablevision, Cox, Time Warner, Comcast and Charter on demand systems beginning Feb. 29 for $5.99 each.
 
Ion Media Networks reached an affiliation agreement with Comcast to carry Ion Television as well as its two digital multiplex offerings, qubo and Ion Life, across its systems.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Google is upgrading its suite of web applications for Apple iPhone users. Improvements to the interface include adding the ability to customize tabs on the Google.com menu bar, improving response rates from Gmail and Calendar and allowing iGoogle widgets to be accessed while browsing the web from an iPhone.
 
Gannett’s USA Today Live rolled out a new line-up of TV and online projects. City Limits Fishing profiles close in angling spots for Versus, premiering Feb. 15. 10 Great Reasons pays tribute to musical guilty pleasures, showing for 10 weeks on Fuse beginning Feb. 19. Gotta Get Gold is about competition among athletes, premiering on Mojo HD July 28. All three series will appear as regular video features on usatoday.com.
 
Acculturated Hispanic-targeted multiplatform network Si TV announced a series of carriage agreements. The network has launched on Comcast in Pittsburgh, on Time Warner Cable in Corpus Christi, Beamont/Port Arthur and the Rio Grande Valley and on TVMax in Houston, TX.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Toshiba is trying to resurrect the HD DVD format with a slew of new marketing initiatives and a new wave of price cuts that will drop some players under the $150 threshold. Toshiba is calling attention to the format’s web-enabled network capabilities that deliver additional web-based content to broadband connected HD DVD players. The company says 30% of HD DVD owners use this feature to access trailers, outtakes and behind-the-scenes content. 
 
Gemstar-TV Guide
signed an agreement to license its IPGs for Mobi TV‘s mobile video programming usage available through mobile carrier partners or via MobiTV.com.
 
BIAP unveiled a new suite of solutions for cable operators, programmers and third party developers to take advantage of new open cable standards. The interactive programming bundle includes Yellow Pages on TV, My Football Tracker, My  Baseball Tracker, eBay on TV, PiTV (Personalized Information TV) and Election Central 2008.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Video sharing site Dailymotion launched a series of new video ad formats to help publishers improve user interaction, branding and viral marketing efforts. New options include a “toaster ad,” allowing advertisers to inject animated flash overlays; video skins wrapping programming around video content; and a 3D companion logo ad clickable during the first 10 seconds of a video.
 
VideoEgg announced new partnerships with MetaCafe, iMeem and Buzznet to increase the reach of its invitation-based video advertising platform. VideoEgg offers publishers interactive, trackable, Flash-based ad solutions.
 
Political ad spending has failed to boost the coffers of major online publishers such as WashingtonPost.com, Slate.com and wsj.com, reports Mediaweek. Search spending on Google AdWords has been one bright spot.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Gannett named Chris Saridakis as its new Chief Digital Officer. Chris moves over from his position of CEO of online ad firm PointRoll, acquired by Gannett in June of 2005. Former digital chief Jack Williams moves over to President of Gannett Digital Ventures, overseeing online classified holdings including CareerBuilder, Classified Ventures, Topix.net and ShopLocal.
 
Digital media distributor Yangaroo appointed Richard Klosa as Chief Technical Officer, replacing Wojtek Hoch, who is leaving the position of VP/Technology to pursue other opportunities. Richard previously served as CTO and Co-Founder of J!VE Media Technologies Inc.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
With the Golden Globes being reduced to a glorified press conference this year (with NBC News’ coverage drawing a meager 5.8 million viewers according to Nielsen,) Heavy.com thought it would show up anyway to cover the red carpet ritual, even if non-union reality stars were the only celebs on hand. Web talent Taryn Southern, host of The Heavy Show and creator of musical parody Hott4Hill, gives it her best.


 

Correction: Lindsay Campbell’s new project for CBS Interactive is called moblogic.tv, a daily news and politics web show scheduled to launch in the coming weeks. Meanwhile Julie Alexandria took over the anchor seat at Wallstrip.com yesterday. She too is part of a brand new generation of talent who has cut her teeth on the web; Julie has hosted segments for Heavy News on Heavy.com as well as for Time Out New York’s on demand service.
