CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

01/10/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 10, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Season Premieres:
FX:  The Shield at 10p

Program Partners will bring two new procedural dramas to market later on this month at the NATPE convention in Las Vegas:  Cold Squad and Stone Undercover, both sold under the company’s Crime Watch initiative.  Both shows are available on a straight barter basis.  Cold Squad focuses on a forensic team led by Sgt Ali McCormick, played by Julie Stewart, which uncovers and resolves cold cases.  Stone Undercover follows a pair of undercover cops who focus primarily on those criminals who think their influence and money put them above the law.  The show stars Chris William Martin and Janet Kidder.

Court TV will launch a new one-hour block, weeknights at 8p called RED: Real, Exciting Dramatic.  Each weeknight the block will include different programming.  On Mondays, back to back eps of Beach Patrol: San Diego; on Tuesdays two episodes of Cops; on Wednesdays two eps of Texas SWAT; Thursdays are two eps of Hot Pursuit;and on Fridays the one hour docu-drama series Anatomy of a Crime.

Programming NoteUPN‘s new series, Get This Party Started, will now debut on Tuesday February 7 at 9p, with an encore scheduled to air weekly on Tuesdays at 8p.  Hosted by Ethan Erickson and Kristin Cavallari, the reality show cameras follow a team of party planner who are under the gun to get their events coordinated and keep their celebrity clients happy.

Sundance Channel has picked up a new series from Fremantle International Distribution called Monkey Dust.  A popular animated series in the UK, Monkey Dust is described as a cutting-edge 30m comedy series set in a nocturnal world where broad portions of British society are unmercifully lampooned, Monkey Dust is scheduled to launch here in March with 18 episodes.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Logo has ordered a new sketch comedy show from executive producers Rosie O’Donnell, Dan MacDonald and Joe De Hierro, called Simply Sketch. The project is billed as an irreverent comedy show for the LGBT audience.

Cable network AMC has signed a development deal with Sonny Grosso to create a limited series based on the experiences of he and his partner Eddie Egan during the a particular 1961 drug bust case, later made famous by the movie The French Connection.  The series will be produced by partners Grosso and Larry Jacobson via their Grosso Jacobson Communications Corp.

Joining the casting ranks at NBC’s Daytime drama series Passions are Adrian Bellani and Mark Cameron Wystrach, in the roles of Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald (starting February 8) and Nicholas Foxworth Crane (starting February 14), respectively.  Both characters are billed as being pivotal romantic characters in the story.

A new project for UPN from comedian Paul Rodriguez, Paramount Network Television, about a father and son who had been estranged.  According to Variety, Rodriguez will play the father, and in the role of his son will be his real son, skateboarding gold medalist Paul Rodriguez Jr. Joe Roth and David Goetsch will exec produce.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Castalia Communications has appointed Luis Remis Director/Sales and Marketing for Mexico and Central America. He will be responsible for developing and executing distribution and advertising sales strategies, as well as for the marketing activities in the region.

Betsy Frank, EVP/Research and Planning at Viacom, is leaving, tho she will continue to consult on a couple of projects. Betsy has been with MTV Networks since 1997. Following the corporate split of Viacom on January 1, Betsy’s job focus had changed significantly and her sphere of influence has reportedly shrunk to the point where she decided to call it a day.  A shame, I’d say, and a huge loss for Viacom.

Cartoon Network has upped Dawn Lee Williamson to VP/Ad Sales.  In this new role, Dawn will oversee the ad sales efforts for Cartoon Network, CartoonNetwork.com, Kids’ WB!, Adult Swim and adultswim.com. She is based in New York and will report to John O’Hara, SVP.

Sesame Workshop has named Susan Kolar to the newly created position of EVP/Chief Administrative Officer. Effective immediately, Susan will oversee finance, legal and business affairs, human resources, facilities, information services and technical operations, services imperative to supporting the Workshop’s child-driven mission. She will report to H. Melvin Ming, COO

Greg Neal has been named VP/Creative Services for Food Network. He will oversee all creative and brand development, as well as the overall look and feel of the network on-air.

The New York Times Company Broadcast Media Group announced appointments at two of its properties.  First, Lou Abitabilo will become the EVP/Station Manager at WNEP in Scranton, Penn. He will report to Lou Kirchen, President and GM/WNEP and Divisional VP/Broadcast Media Group. Also Wes Milbourn will become the EVP/Station Manager at KFOR/KAUT, the Group’s duopoly in Oklahoma City. He will report to Tim Morrissey, President and GM/KFOR/KAUT and Divisional VP/Broadcast Media Group.

Craig Hunegs has been upped to EVP/Business Management, Warner Bros. Television Group, it was announced today by Bruce Rosenblum, President, Warner Bros. Television Group.  Craig will serve as the senior business executive in the recently created Warner Bros. Television Group, which has oversight of and a broad mandate to grow all of Warner Bros.’ television businesses–including production (Warner Bros. Television, Telepictures Productions and Warner Bros. Animation), worldwide distribution (Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution) and broadcasting (The WB).

FOX Station Sales announced Alan Brittain as VP/GSM, overseeing key regional offices in addition to New York. Alan makes the move to Fox Station Sales after spending the last five years with NBC Station Sales; three of those years as SVP in New York and two years as Sales Manager in Philadelphia.

Alex Wallace has been named VP/NBC News, reporting to Steve Capus, President/NBC News.  Alex will oversee NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams in addition to various NBC News specials.

* RATINGS *Sunday — A18-49 Analysis: ABC led on Sunday night with an overall 6.9/17 rating among A18-49 according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  At 7p the runover of the Bengals v. Steelers game put CBS well in front with an 8.8/23 for the hour. At 9p ABC took over and held the lead for the remainder of the night: EM: Home Edition 6.9/16, Desperate Housewives 10.2/11, and Grey’s Anatomy 7.2/18.

Today in History:
1949
– The Radio Corporation of America, known as RCA, announced the new 7-inch, 45 rpm phonograph record. Known familiarly as the 45, the record with the big hole in the middle, the invention would forever change the pop music business. RCA manufactured a record player that would only play 45s and had a fat spindle to make “stacking wax” easy and automatic.
