Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
02/05/13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 5, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
When something goes wrong at work and it is not easily fixed, tell your manager. There is nothing more distasteful to a manager than being broadsided when they didn’t have to be. Sure you might face some retribution when you tell them, but you will also gain trust and respect. Much more important in the long run.
Stay away from office gossip and only pass on the good accomplishments co-workers achieved. Most people like gossip, especially the juicy type, and sometimes these gossipers are fun to hang around. But what manager is going to promote a gossiper? None of them. Being in charge of people requires discretion, something the gossipers have already proven they don’t possess.
When in a meeting, take notes. I know this sounds antiquated, but if you are on your phone, tablet or even laptop, you could be playing Angry Birds or some other activity that has nothing to do with the meeting. Taking notes makes it clear you are paying attention, and added bonus, when you copy them over into your laptop, the retention of the informational will last much longer.
Never expect to be rewarded for a good job. Your reward is your paycheck and benefits, that’s it. So if you went over and beyond, so what, everyone has. People notice hard workers, especially the supervisors.
Always go to business functions. Poorly kept secret, office parties can do some real damage to your career. Much better secret, the office party is also the golf course where many a great thing can happen to your career. Go to the events and, mingle, small talk and always stay sober. It is a great time for a superior to come up to you with some good news. Especially once they see how you handle yourself in social situations.
Be a team player, rather than announcing that you’re one. The facts will speak for itself, no need to broadcast it.
If something goes wrong, ask how you can help. Too many times when something like the internet fails, people hide in their cubicles until the problem is resolved. Don’t be that person, ask what you can do and then be happy to do it. It might be calling the internet provider every 5 minutes until things are back to normal, it might be getting the office coffee. It doesn’t matter, what does matter is when things got tough, you were on the front lines and not hiding.
You will be taught how to do your job, and as you get better at is, spend some time trying to figure out what do to if things don’t go as planned, or how to do your job faster, making your work time more efficient. Nobody will ever know that you’ve done this, until things go wrong, and you’re the one with the work-around that makes it right.

When an ex-girlfriend leaves a baby on Ben’s doorstep, he has a choice: Step up and be a dad or step aside a give Emma up for adoption. Some “heroes” showed up for him once he made his choice; his mom, brother and friends.
Like Ben, you have two choices. Keep doing what you’re doing and let your career happen. Perhaps someone else will step up and be the hero. Or, YOU can step up! How about being the hero in your own career story?
If you want to step aside, people will understand. It takes a strong willed person with clear determination to “take on fatherhood unexpectedly,” but if you do want to step up, here are some tips that will help:
1. Decide. Right now! Ben took less than a 22-minute episode to decide he was going to raise Emma. So, as the veteran here, (well, maybe not the veteran, but the coach) I’m giving you 22 minutes to decide. Are you going to go after your career like it’s a matter of life or death? In other words. It’s time to raise the stakes. No more treating this like a ‘hope’ for work, but instead an unstoppable determination to GET WORK.
2. Analyze. You are the only one who knows what’s really going on in your mind. How much effort are you putting into your job pursuit? How many hours a day are focused on productive, effective job getting actions? What gets in your way? What are your fears?
3. Plan. Ben had a plan. When the plan was deterred or went off track, his family and friends regrouped and came up with a new plan. Have you formulated a one-year plan to complete reachable goals?
4. Get Help. If you keep doing what you’ve always done you’re going to keep getting what you’ve always gotten. Ben has his mom to bounce ideas off of. How are you getting out-side-of-the-box ideas? Who are you getting help from?
5. Be Unstoppable. You may find with your new plan and your new ideas that your actions may not turn out the results you expected. Re-group and move forward. You may find that you are getting rejected more. That’s because you’re putting yourself out there more. No’s don’t change your life, yeses do. Be unstoppable!
You’ve come to expect in a show like this, that the characters will take care of the baby and live happily ever after. What have you come to expect from your career?
And Action!
You get what you truly expect, so if in your analysis, you didn’t expect with 100% certainty that you’d be unstoppable in reaching your career goals, it’s time to do damage control on your mindset. If not, your unconscious mind will be as destructive as the doubts that had Ben originally thinking he couldn’t be a good father.

I received a job offer from one company, but I really want to wait to see if I get an offer from my dream employer. What are my options?
One option is to let the dream employer know that you have an offer, and see if there is any way they can let you know if there is a possibility of working together. That”s the proactive way to approach this, rather than the “wait and see” option or the “just take the job” option.
What should I do at the end of the interview? What should I do after the interview?
At the end of the interview, ask when the decision will be made. After the interview, send a hand written thank you note and follow up if you haven’t heard anything by the date the interviewer said the decision would be made. You can also have people make calls on your behalf if you think it would be well received.
