Good morning, it’s Tuesday, February 5, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt magnanimously offered Jerry Yang, his counterpart at Yahoo, help in thwarting Microsoft‘s unsolicited bid for the company, The Wall Street Journal reported. Yet he stopped short of offering to buy the company himself, and so far no other interested parties have emerged. Meanwhile, speculation is rising that European regulators will put Microsoft through the ringer if the deal goes through, given its history of antitrust violations.  
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Clear Channel Television’s Inergize Digital Media signed a deal with web syndication service ClipSyndicate to provide locally-relevant financial news video segments from Bloomberg TV to its local station site partners. ClipSyndicate’s service scans text transcripts and metadata such as ticker symbols to determine which videos to serve.
 
Bravo’s
Television Without Pity site added its first video blog, “The Week Without Pity” and will add additional snark-infested shows in the coming months.
 
TV Guide.com
added 9 new breaking news video sources to its Online Video Guide, sourcing clips from TMZ.com, CNN.com, MSN.com, ABC, CBS, NBC, E! Online, BET and iVillage. The guide also added a new search feature allowing users to sort through breaking news, based on relevance, date posted, network and genre.
 
ESPN announced that college and military users (with domain names ending in .edu or .mil) will be able to access live subscription broadband content on ESPN360.com from now on, free of charge.
 
History.com launched a user generated video contest asking visitors to create their own music video for the song “World” from Five For Fighting’s John Ondrasik using the site’s archival footage. The site will also drive traffic to Ondrasik charity site. The History Channel will air the highest-rated mash up when the contest ends 6 weeks from now.
 
FoxReality.com
is streaming original 3-5 minute webisodes every Tuesday offering “scandalous” supplemental programming from its new show Paradise Hotel 2, which premiered late last night. Full episodes will be available for purchase from iTunes, Amazon and BitTorrent following their broadcast debuts.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Online video site DailyMotion.com and viral comedy studio JibJab Media launched Politics Schmolitics, a new political satire destination to aggregate the latest politically-themed fare on the web. Obama Girl’s latest, “Super Obama Girl,” is headlining leading into Super Tuesday.
 
The founders of DealLocker.com are launching a new online shopping site today called TypoBuddy that helps shoppers save through human error. Simply type in an item you’re looking for on eBay or craigslist, and the search tool pulls up auctions or items for sale that others have missed because the seller misspelled the entry.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Yahoo is shuttering its online subscription music service Yahoo! Music Unlimited, replacing it with a new partnership with the Rhapsody music service jointly owned by RealNetworks and MTV. Yahoo subscribers will have their libraries migrated to Rhapsody’s digital music service in the coming months which is, at $12.99/month, $4 more expensive. Yahoo also acquired web browser plug in FoxyTunes, which allows users to insert songs into emails and blog posts.
 
AOL
acquired widget maker Goowy Media, which provides content tools, an ad platform and related analytic tools for web publishers. The company has created several original rich media widgets for myAOL.com.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
W2 Group led a $6 million funding round for digital marketing firm Ringleader Digital to help the company build out its premium mobile advertising network. Ringleader works to streamline the process of adapting web-based ads for mobile environments.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Americans are turning to their PCs to watch their favorite prime time shows more often than they’re turning to VOD, according to the new Digital Life America tracking study from Solutions Research Group. A full 20% of the 1,150 users surveyed said they watch shows online on a weekly basis – compared to only 14% who said they use cable’s VOD services weekly. 43% of those surveyed have watched at least one of their favorite shows online, up from 25% one year ago. ABC.com received the highest grades in terms of user experience with 52% describing it as “excellent,” followed by 44% giving excellent ratings to Fox.com.
 
Pepsi‘s silent spot was mentioned in the most blog posts during and after the Super Bowl with a 22% share, according to social media data mining from Collective Intellect, followed by Bud (Rocky Clydesdale spot) with 21% then Audi (Godfather homage) with 14%. The eTrade baby commercials produced the most positive sentiment with 80% compared to other “dot com” advertisers CareerBuilder, GoDaddy, and SalesGenie. Hershey’s Ice Breaker ad had a 75% negative sentiment overall while Planter’s Nut Perfume spot managed 54% favorable sentiment.
 
Speaking of web buzz, Nielsen Online‘s Buzz Volume index has Barack Obama in the lead based on a sample of over 26 million messages posted to blogs from Jan. 1-29. Let’s see if buzz translates to votes.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Cablevision Systems Corp. hired Kim Norris as SVP/Business Development & Strategy. She will responsible for developing new categories of advertising inventory leveraging Cablevision’s fiber network & advanced digital services. Keith Agabob was also upped to VP/Product Management, responsible for developing and managing advanced advertising and commerce products on Cablevision’s digital cable and broadband platforms.
 
MTV Networks promoted Lisa Sherman from SVP/GM to EVP/GM of LGBT-focused Logo. She will continue to report to Brian Graden, President of MTV Networks Music Group and President of Logo.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

National Geographic Channel launched a new broadband site featuring online video and only video. NGCvideos.com breaks itself down into 6 different genres: Animals & Nature, Exploration & Adventure, History & Events, People & Places, Science & Technology and Nat Geo Wild, offering video segments from dozens of Nat Geo shows. The presentation is very clean and free of clutter, and all the videos are embeddable and shareable – still a rarity in the cable world.
