Comedy Central is developing a new late night 2am block called Web Shows which will feature – you guessed it – shows originally developed for the internet, more specifically for Comedy Central’s site Motherload.  According to Hollywood Reporter, the 30m block is scheduled to premiere on Monday and will air once a week.  Content will include 8 or 9 shorts, each averaging between two and three minutes long, as well as AtomFilms webisode series The Punk Group: Fat Girls on Bicycles.

The self-proclaimed “Rocky of Comedy” and known for his macho limericks – Andrew Dice Clay is back in a new seven-episode 30m series on VH1 called Dice Undisputed. The series begins March 4 at 10p with two piggy-backed episodes. Coming out of retirement with a new book, a record, in addition to a Sirius radio show and live stand-up gigs, Andrew’s TV show will chronicle his often comedic struggle to balance his personal and professional life. Dice Undisputed is produced by Fox TV Studios.

The new NBC improvisational comedy series Thank God You’re Here will debut April 9 at 9p and again on April 16 at 9p. The series, hosted by David Alan Grier along with judge Dave Foley, will settle into its regular time slot on Wednesdays at 8p starting April 18. The comedy show’s pilot episode features Jennifer Coolidge, Bryan Cranston, Joel McHale and Wayne Knight. Other celebrities such as Fred Willard, Tom Arnold, Fran Drescher, Tom Green, Mo’Nique among others will try their talent at comedy improv during upcoming episodes. The series is produced by FremantleMedia North America.

Clarification : Retro Television Network (RTN) and Equity Broadcasting Corporation together have licensed programs from the Stephen J. Cannell library, which is distributed exclusively by Carsey-Werner.

FUEL TV and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) will expand their rights agreement to televise the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour destinations starting April 1. Showcasing the top female surfers in the world, The ASP Women’s World Tour will make seven stops at beaches in Brazil, Spain, Australia and Hawaii. FUEL TV will also televise the ten stop 2007 Foster’s ASP World Tour.

The Sportsman Channel has just launched on Comcast Cable in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville, AL; and in Houma and Laplace, LA.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

New projects currently in development at MTV:

  • Scarred is the story behind some of the internet’s most viral videos.  Hosted by Jacoby Shaddix, MTV has ordered 10 Episodes
  • Room 401 comes from Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg, looks to see how people respond when things around them suddenly become far less than normal.  From Katalyst Film and TV, MTV has ordered 8 episodes, and plan to debut this year.
  • Kaya is a scripted series – MTV’s first in several years – about a musically gifted woman who, along with her band, becomes an overnight sensation.  The drama explores how Kaya and her colleagues deal with the new found fame, the effect on their friends and family.  Described by MTV as “raw and uncut”, the story is told thru a series of flash-backs, present day moments and occasional flash-forwards. Kaya is a co-venture between MTV and Protocol Entertainment.
  • Me and Mrs. Jones is a 30m docu-style series as cameras follow the day to day lives of MTV’s most popular artists, Nas and Kelis.  MTV has ordered 8 episodes.
  • The Kentucky Kid chronicles the life of pro motorcycle racer Nicky Hayden as he wins the 2006 MotoGP World Championship and defends his title in the 2007 season. MTV has ordered 8 episodes.
  • Taquita & Kaui is the odd couple you saw meet on MTV’s series Making the Band 3.  While these two girls didn’t make the band in that series, they did become fast friends, have moved to Las Vegas to pursue their dreams of stardom.  Cameras watch as that dream unfolds, thru the highs and lows, thru a variety of jobs including magician assistants, clowns, dancers and others. The first of 8 episodes is scheduled to debut on MTV in April.
~ BROADBAND & DIGITAL ~

AT&T’s U-Verse fiber-optic TV service will add Scripps Network’s Home & Garden Television, Food Network, DIY Network, Fine Living, Great American Country, HGTV HD and Food Network HD to its programming line up. AT&T hopes to reach nearly 19 million households with U-verse TV by the end of 2008.

The National Basketball Association is creating an NBA Channel on YouTube. As NBC’s channel samples the network’s shows, the NBA Channel will feature clips from full-length games running 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The deal also includes a test to participate in Google’s AdSense video syndication network.

National Geographic Digital Media struck a deal with peer-to-peer platform Azureus to make its content available on zudeo.com. The zudeo player is one of the first to stream video content in high resolution. Thematic channels on the site include HD, movie trailers, animation, extreme sports, feature-length films and music videos. BBC Worldwide and Starz Media are also partners.

CBS Corp. will invest $7 million in virtual web content developer Electric Sheep Co., which develops 3-D entities in virtual online worlds such as Second Life. CBS is one of many studios trying to harness the potential of virtual worlds as a way to connect with audiences. Electric Sheep is already working with CBS Interactive to develop The L-Word in Second Life, providing a virtual forum for fans of the Showtime show, as well as promotions for Two and Half Men filmed in Second Life. AOL, NBC and Viacom are also among Electric Sheep’s clients.

Apple is delaying the launch of Apple TV until mid-March. The device will allow any video purchased from iTunes to be watched on a living room set. A Mac or PC connects to the device via HDMI port, component audio and video ports or a wireless home network. It will retail for $299.

Jeff Lucas, EVP/Entertainment Sales including Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land and CMT
Jim Perry, EVP/Nickelodeon Kids and Family Brands including Nick at Nite

Under the reorganization, David Lawenda will move from senior VP of ad sales at Spike to take a similar job at VH1. The overall size of the MTVN sales forces will be reduced slightly to put more emphasis on service and support.

Jeff will dually report to Bridget Baker, President/NBCU TV Networks Distribution and to Jean-Briac Perrette (JB), President/NBCU Digital Distribution. In this capacity, Jeff will manage NBCU’s financial efforts for the affiliate sales and marketing divisions in addition to digital distribution businesses. Furthermore, Eddie Gollhofer will be the new Finance Manager/Digital Distribution, reporting to Jeff Fleeher and benefiting JB Perrette’s group. Eddie will manage the financial planning and analysis as well as commercial support for the various digital platforms. Elsewhere at NBC Universal, Nick Johnson will become VP/Digital Media Sales to head the division’s national sales team as well as supervising the sales strategies for the company’s various digital properties. Nick will report to Peter Naylor, SVP/NBCU Digital Media Sales.

MTV has upped Lois Curren to President/Entertainment and Programming. Lois will provide oversight for all production, development, program planning and scheduling for the network. Based in Santa Monica, she will continue to report to Brian Graden, President/Entertainment, MTV Networks Music Group and President of Logo.
