Cynopsis: DIGITAL


Good morning, it’s Tuesday, February 26, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

ABC struck an “unprecedented arrangement” with its affiliates to expand ad-supported, fast-forward disabled VOD offerings to multiple cable, satellite and telco distributors. Each affiliate will get one local 30-second avail for each 30-minutes of programming, twice what they receive from streaming shows on their website. ABC has been testing the service in Cox’s Orange County system and is more than convinced viewers are happy to put up with ads in exchange for the ability to time shift their favorite shows. (Research conducted by Knowledge Networks/Statistical Research said 93% of viewers agreed to the trade off, with 20% saying they preferred ad supported VOD to a DVR.) The deal also removes previous repurposing restrictions, which should open the door to distributing ABC shows on additional platforms beyond current distribution partners such as iTunes and Xbox.


It’s not TV, it’s the internet. HBO launched an officially branded YouTube channel featuring full episodes of In Treatment and clips from Flight of the Conchords, Entourage, The Wire, Extras, Real Time with Bill Maher and Def Comedy Jam. Look there also for YouTube-only features in the near future.

TVGuide Broadband announced a pair of new production agreements. Rhett & Link, hosts of The CW’s Online Nation, will produce three original music videos, the first of which launched yesterday on TVGuide’s YouTube channel. Nick Davis Productions will also produce a 10-part webisode series in late April called, “Making News … This Just In.”.

TVN Entertainment was selected by on demand DVD feature film distributor Popcorn Entertainment to distribute bundled VOD and DVD purchases of Hollywood movies the day they are released on DVD. Customers who purchase a movie will be able to watch it on cable for 24 hours before the DVD arrives in their mailbox.


Women’s online vertical network Glam Media closed on $84.6 million in private financing led by Hubert Burda Media, with $64.6 million in Series D funding and $20 million in revenue-based debt financing. The new investment will help fuel Glam Media’s global expansion across new territories and categories through strategic acquisitions and adoption of new technologies.

Mobile media messaging company Zannel will launch an open API program on March 3rd to allow third party developers to create rich media applications, widgets and mashups for the platform. Zannel also expanded its list of export feeds, enabling users to instantly publish mobile video, picture, and text updates to Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, Myspace and Blogger, among others.

DivX is shutting down the servers of video sharing site Stage6.com on Feb. 28. The site launched in July of 2007, positioned as a higher quality YouTube.

Male-targeted video site CraveOnline.com acquired gaming site GameRevolution .com, expanding parent AtomicOnline’s group of niche online properties.

DailyMotion announced implementation of INA Media‘s fingerprinting technology across its sites allowing content producers to create an identifiable signature for protect against unauthorized usage.


Congressman Ed Markey (D, MA.), sponsor of the new net neutrality bill, warned the FCC to closely examine ISPs’ bandwidth management policies in a packed public hearing held on the issue at Harvard. He made the point that if P2P services are responsible for slowing down network traffic, then it’s time to reexamine broadband policies in order to foster more competition. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin seemed open to ISP regulation, suggesting the agency may have to take action to ensure operators conduct business in an “open and transparent” way.

Stock photo and digital media distributor Getty Images finally found a buyer, agreeing to be acquired by private equity firm Hellman & Friedman for $34/share or $2.4 billion, representing a 39% premium over its closing price on Friday. Hellman & Friedman is the company that took DoubleClick private before engineering its sale to Google.

Media General signed an agreement to acquire online coupon and shopping site DealTaker .com. The site features a proprietary price search engine that tracks prices of more than 15 million products and averages 400,000 unique visitors a month, according to the station group.


Microsoft announced a new “Engagement Mapping” standard to measure digital campaign performance. The system attempts to take into account various online touchpoints and interactions a consumer makes before making an online purchase to determine “Engagement ROI.”

Avenue A | Razorfish‘s annual digital outlook guide provided a snapshot of current online ad spending trends. It reported that vertical sites accounted for 39% of spending in 2007, followed by 31% of spending in search, only 19% in portals and 11% in ad networks. The agency more than doubled the number of sites it bought ads on, from 863 to 1,832, including entertainment sites, user generated video sites, gaming portals, music destinations and social networks.

A social media buzz report conducted by Collective Internet around Oscar advertising found that American Express got the most bang for its buck, generating the most pre-Oscar buzz despite only airing one spot. (Most online discussions focused on Diane Von Furstenberg’s dress.)

Online voters chose Celeste Wouden of Mantua, Utah to be Dove‘s official spokesperson for its Supreme Cream Oil Body Wash, with over 3,500 Oscar viewers submitting entries. Two top spots were revealed during a commercial break  viewers then had one hour to vote online or by text for their favorite of the two finalists’ ads. “Private Practice” star Amy Brenneman announced America’s favorite ad during a commercial break later in the show.


The Council for Research Excellence (CRE) and Nielsen will commission a year-long study by Ball State University’s Center for Media Design to observe how audiences consume video on emerging platforms inside and outside of the home. The Video Consumer Mapping Study will measure usage in 10-second intervals throughout the day, across a sample of 350 people in 5 major markets.


eBay’s Skype named head of Shopping.com Josh Silverman as its new CEO replacing interm Chief Michael van Swaaij, effective March 24. Andre Haddad, most recently SVP/Products for eBay, will replace Josh as the CEO of Shopping.com.

Warner Music Group announced that WMG executive Michael Nash will succeed Alejandro Zubillaga as EVP/Digital Strategy and Business Development, effective June 1, 2008. Michael will set the company’s worldwide digital strategy including key internet and mobile commerce initiatives.

NBC Universal named Elizabeth Asencio to SVP/National Sales and upped Heather McCallion to VP/Affiliate Sales for the company’s TV Networks Distribution Division. Elizabeth will work on the National Accounts team for the distribution of all NBCU TV Networks Distribution services including The Olympics, VOD and HD products for Cablevision, AT&T and Verizon. Heather will manage sales for the Eastern Region.

New York-based music and visual effects studio Fluid hired former Chemistri veteran Robin Burchill as Editor.


Never underestimate the cuteness factor when it comes to personal electronics. A company in San Diego has introduced a personal handheld web surfing device called the Chumby that connects via WiFi and delivers customizable content from partnerships with CBS, MTV Networks, MySpace, The Weather Channel Interactive, Shoutcast and Scripps Networks. User interaction is made through a touchscreen and built around widgets designed to distribute bite size snippets of programming audiences will feel compelled to share with their “chums.”  It comes wrapped in leather and also serves as a clock/internet radio player or a digital photo frame and can be plugged into any electrical outlet to recharge. “The Chumby Network” is supported by commercial sponsors and provides free content to chumby owners and “virtual chumbys” that can be placed on other connected consumer devices and social networking sites. This is the kind of thing that could help podcasters reach a more diverse audience, and at $179.99, it’s less than half the price of an iPhone.
