Cynopsis: Classified

Advantage

02/22/11

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, February 22, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!

The Worst.

A buddy and myself are always come up with ways of making millions of dollars.  Our last great late night, beer drinking idea was bed bug sniffing dogs.  We looked into it, about $7,000 a dog plus training for the human.  Plus dogs are faster than humans, with a fairly low initial investment, this was our path to easy street.  Except for one thing.  Residential clients weren’t enough to sustain a business and we later found out that hotels aren’t particularly fond of having official looking people walking dogs around the hotel, everyone is thinking bomb.  When the guests find out there is not a bomb, we are just testing for bed bugs, this offered little to no relief.

So we came up with a sure winner, The Worst.  The Worst is a game they you must supply, according to your co-players, the worst answer in the group.  A typical question would be new name of a TV series and star, Intense Medical Drama starring Carrot Top.  You have 30 seconds to hand in your answer, the round leader reads all the answers handed in and everyone votes.  If someone votes for yours, you get a point.  First to eleven wins.

We loved this idea because it sounded fun and cheap to produce.  Six blank writing pads, six pencils and one thousand cardboard game cards with the questions printed on them.   After the game became a hit, we’d have it made into an app and fortune number two would come rolling in.

All we needed were one thousand, unique, thought provoking and or amusing questions.  So we made a list of everything we could think of from pop culture, from The Hulk’s purple ever-stay-on-pants to Apple’s failed Newton.  In the first hour we had 120 such icons, so we got more beer to enhance our thinking.

In a couple of hours we had 500 icons so we thought that perhaps we should start forming the questions that will make this game the most sought after, laugh riot of the year, like Intense Medical Drama starring Carrot Top; or what scientific principle allowed the Hulk’s pants to stay on while being angry.

After a few more beers we decided it was time to talk about the business side of it.  We’d need an attorney, to make sure we get to keep all the millions we were going to make, we’d need a trademark attorney, a designer to make our packaging as attractive as possible, along with our question cards, a marketing specialist, a manufacturer to make game pieces, the paper company for the card stock, the printer who will charge you extra for each colored used, the company that is going to manufacture the question card box and the box for the entire game, our sales people and distributors, the trucking company, insurance in case kids liked the taste of our game pieces, the  investors and loan happy banks that would be delighted in invest in a game made by amateurs called The Worst.  And that is just half of it, marketing and publicity for the game so it would actually sell.

Then at our next meeting, before the first beer was opened, we talked about how we would have to invest everything, EVERYTHING we had into this game.  And if it didn’t work, we all would be broke, lose all of our savings and perhaps some of our homes too.

It occurred to us that it takes a special type of person to start your own company, a person with the guts and fortitude none of us had.  Maybe their a little bit crazy, but they have a belief in something that is so great, that they are willing to risk it all to make that dream come true.

After that night, I shop at Mom and Pop’s more often than I used to.  I still go to big box stores, but not as often especially when I’m with younger people, because I’d like the next generation to see these wonderful, crazy, risk it all type of people, and wonder someday, if they’ll have the guts to do the same.

Economic News

Despite foul weather, which generally means slow job growth, over  half a million people found new jobs last month.  Construction was hit the hardest by the snowy weather, yet manufacturing picked up 49,000 jobs while retailers picked up an additional 28,000 jobs.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
Life Unexpected
by Jessica Sitomer

After being in the foster care system her whole life, Lux Cassidy thought being reunited with her real parents and going to a normal high school, was going to be great. But she quickly learned that there is no such thing as “normal high school.” It’s not who you are it’s all about “how you market yourself.” Being the new kid with a tattooed, motorcycle riding boyfriend, wasn’t helping her situation, either.

How do you market yourself? Are you one of those “I’m available people?” An “I’m Available Person (IAP),” is someone who calls everyone he/she knows and leaves a message that he/she is available. If you’re an extreme IAP, you also let people know you’re available on Facebook, and tell people whom you’ve just met, that you’re available.

Here’s what happens when you’re an IAP: people hear you, know you’re available, but don’t have anything for you. This makes them feel uncomfortable so they don’t call you back, don’t respond to your FB post, or end your conversation. Being an IAP is outdated. It’s time to get current on your marketing. Here are 3 ideas for you from the business world, which haven’t saturated the entertainment industry… yet! So get started now, because once everyone’s doing it, you’ll be outdated again.

1.Create a newsletter. People read newsletters because they find value in them. Therefore, start out with a quick intro about what you’re up to and then give them some value. Write an article or re-publish someone else’s that you found valuable, that would interest the people you’re reaching. Make recommendations. Write reviews. A newsletter keeps you on their mind, the same way an “I’m Available” call does, only people get something out of a newsletter.

2.Write a blog. Instead of posting to 1000 of your closest “Friends” that you’re available, post a link to a blog where they can get to know you better, interact with comments, and get valuable information. Once people get to know you better, you can reach out to them personally when you’re out of work and ask for referrals or set visits.

3.Look for creative ways to create a campaign around what’s currently happening in your life. Successful clients of mine have created behind the scenes videos for YouTube, teaser postcards/emails, and generated press by tying their entertainment position together with a unique hook on a current event, then sent the press around. Campaigns are extremely underused by entertainment industry professionals, even though so many of us are involved in the making of them for other people.

Lux keeps hitting high school misery between her choice in guys, her parents’ interference, and her learning disabilities. But she keeps fighting to market herself as a regular teenager which always manages to make her stand out in the crowd.

You’ve got to be competitive to stay in the game!

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
by Jessica Sitomer

I have been in for three positions in the past 8 months that fit my skill set well. In all three meetings the interviewer (not HR) made it very clear that I was the right fit. In one case, it was just a matter of getting the position approved before we would go further with our conversation. What are your ideas on the best way to stay in touch? … and how often should I be contacting them?

When it comes to follow up the best rule of thumb is to ask when you’re in the room. When the interview is over, simply ask, “How do you prefer to be followed up with and how often?” You can even ask, by when they plan to fill the position. Everyone will have a different answer, and you can tailor you follow up strategy to fit each person.

At this point, since you left the room without asking, your guess is as good as anyone’s. So follow up in the professional manner with which you would want someone to follow up with you.

I love my job of 10 years and excel at it. I have been promoted twice and the benefits are excellent but the salary is OK. I get along well with my boss, co-works and most employees in the company.

However, with raising cost of living my budget is getting tighter. How do I negotiate for a better salary with out sounding ungrateful or like the average person who wants a raise in pay?

I understand companies also have to adjust with the raising cost of running a business and there is always the option of getting another job with a larger salary but I am very happy where I am. I am sure there are other people in my same situation and I would like to know how best to handle this situation.

If you’re not ungrateful, you’re not going to sound ungrateful. If you’re not the average person who wants a raise in pay, you’re not going to sound like the average person. You can only be you, and nothing else will come across.

That said, you have to be you, and “you” are a person who loves where you work, excel at what you do, gets along well with others, and are struggling to make ends meet with the rising cost of living. That’s who you’re going to be when you go in to ask for your raise.

I’m sure you’re right, that they’re are other people in your same position, but that’s for the employer to deal with, not you. Your best way to handle the situation, is to make the best case for what you want, and be prepared to leave if you can’t afford to stay.

If they truly value you, and can’t afford to lose you, you have a very good chance. But if they are adjusting to the raising cost of business and can’t afford to keep you, you have a difficult decision to make. No one can advise you on what to decide. That is for you to do, and you only.
