Kirstie Alley is back on television with TV Land’s aptly titled Kirstie’s New Show (previously titled Giant Baby) with Alley as Broadway star Madison Banks. The show reunites Alley with friend and former Cheers co-star Rhea Perlman in addition to Seinfeld actor Michael Richards. Set to premiere this fall with 12 episodes, Kirstie’s New Show is written and executive produced by Marco Pennette; Alley and manager Jason Weinberg are EPs along with TV Land’s Larry W. Jones and Keith Cox.
Matt Williams, creator/EP of the ’80s series Roseanne, will become writer and showrunner on George Lopez’s comedy project produced by Lionsgate TV and distributed by Debmar-Mercury. Lopez and Williams are shopping the multi-camera Latino family comedy series to networks which will follow Debmar-Mercury’s 10-90 formula (in which 10 episodes air as a test-run and if a ratings threshold is met, a 90-episode order is triggered, allowing the project to sell into syndication on an expedited timeline) which was used successfully for Tyler Perry’s comedies on TBS and most recently for Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management on FX. A year ago, Lopez inked a deal with Lionsgate and Debmar-Mercury to co-create, star in and serve as EP on a new multi-cam comedy about a Latino family. This last January, Lionsgate signed a first-look deal with Williams and his Wind Dancer Films. The George Lopez comedy falls under that deal.
Lifetime is passing on Renee Zellweger’s drama pilot Cinnamon Girl set in the late 1960s/early 1970s Los Angeles. Zellweger created the drama with Anthony Tambakis.

Prolific actor Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty) landed the lead role in Showtime’s drama pilot The Vatican, a thriller about spirituality, power and politics set against the modern-day machinations within the Catholic Church. Chandler will portray Cardinal Thomas Duffy, Archbishop of New York. Matthew Goode and Sebastian Koch have also joined the cast. Production begins this year on The Vatican which is produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with SHOWTIME for series consideration.
Former Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman will next play an assassin in FOX’s drama pilot Boomerang.
Burn Gorman is joining AMC’s period drama pilot Turn, playing Hewlett, a British Major assigned to the Colonies. Gorman had previously starred in Torchwood.
David Alan Grier (In Living Color) is going back to school in CBS’ adaptation of Bad Teacher, based on the 2011 Cameron Diaz feature film. In the single-camera comedy, Grier will play the principal, Carl Gaines, the role played by John Michael Higgins in the Columbia Pictures movie.
