Yesterday The CW handed early renewals to freshmen series Arrow as well as returning series The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural for the next fall season. Arrow is the network’s best series debut since 2009 when it launched last October and currently ranks as CW’s most-watched series with 4.3 million weekly viewers. The Vampire Diaries will be back for a 5th season while Supernatural notches its ninth season in the fall.
Advertisers seeking the elusive demo of today’s young, modern men can reach them via the new Esquire Network, as of April 22, 2013. A rebrand of G4 through a strategic partnership between NBCUniversal and Hearst Magazines, “Esquire Network will give advertisers access to one of the most coveted and untapped audiences in the cable entertainment marketplace – the upwardly mobile, educated and highly-engaged man,” said Linda Yaccarino, President, Ad Sales at NBCUniversal. “We’re already in talks with key clients and developing fully integrated opportunities for them to align their brands with this hard to reach demo.”
NBCUniversal will own and operate the new network, which will be helmed by General Manager Adam Stotsky in tandem with David Granger, Editor in Chief of Esquire magazine. The programming will expand on G4’s base of games, gears and gadgets and includes:
- A new original culinary competition series, Knife Fight, in development and executive produced by Drew Barrymore, Flower Films and Authentic Entertainment. Hosted by Top Chef winner Ilan Hall.
- The Getaway (wt), executive produced by Anthony Bourdain and Zero Point Zero. The show highlights travel-loving personalities who take viewers to their favorite city in the world and reveal their top spots to eat, drink, shop and hang out.
- G4’s fan-favorite competition series, American Ninja Warrior, which will return for a fifth season this summer and will also air on NBC.
- NBC’s Parks and Recreation and the former STARZ series Party Down will join the festivities, too.
Based on the success of HGTV’s January premiere of Cousins on Call featuring real-life cousins and contractors Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri, the network approved Undercover Overhaul, a new series. Production is underway on six one-hour episodes where Anthony and John demolish outdated, dysfunctional spaces and surprise neighborhood heroes with amazing renovations. The series is slated to premiere this October. New episodes of Cousins on Call air on HGTV every Wednesday at 8p.
GMC TV is one of the only networks presenting original stage plays produced exclusively for television. This Friday, GMC serves up the GMC World Premiere Play, “JD Lawrence’s Community Service” at 9p with an encore at 11p. The play stars actor and playwright JD Lawrence in addition to Buddy Lewis, Drew Sidora, Clifton Powell and Terri J. Vaughn. Written and directed by Lawrence, the comedic play is about a struggling Brooklyn actor and playwright (Lawrence) who would do almost anything to help a friend in need. The play is produced by Swirl Films’ Eric Tomosunas.
A third season of Food Network’s hidden camera series Restaurant Stakeout bows March 13 at 10p. New York restaurateur Willie Degel is back using his covert surveillance techniques to show struggling restaurant owners what really happens when their employees think no one is watching.
Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and Starz forged a new multi-year deal that extends their exclusive first-run output premium pay TV deal. As part of the agreement, Starz will have the exclusive pay television rights to Sony Pictures’ theatrical releases through 2021. Their previous agreement covered films released theatrically through 2016. Sony Pictures’ films include titles from Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, TriStar and Screen Gems. The updated SPE-Starz deal provides movie content for all Starz platforms including the linear STARZ and ENCORE channels in standard-def and HD, subscription VOD services in standard-def, HD On Demand and 3D On Demand and online streaming services, including the recently launched STARZ PLAY and ENCORE PLAY. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sony titles coming in 2013 exclusive on pay television to the STARZ channels and services include The Amazing Spider-Man, 21 Jump Street, Zero Dark Thirty, The Vow, Men in Black 3 and Resident Evil: Retribution.
CBS and Amazon.com, Inc. revealed a content licensing agreement involving the new CBS series Under the Dome. The deal establishes an exclusive in-season, online subscription-video-on-demand (SVOD) window for the show on Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service. From Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, Under the Dome is set to debut on CBS June 24.
