Cynopsis: Classified Advantage 12.07.10 Good morning – it’s Tuesday, December 7, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies. I know a young lady, Marie, who works in Philadelphia. She loves the City of Brotherly Love and she bought a small house in a beautiful part of the city. Marie is very smart, very quick, and an extremely hard worker. And she is stuck. Background Marie went to a major East Coast university, and after her sophomore year, she was hired by said university to be a Professor’s assistant. She was the first undergrad to ever get this position within the business department. As part of her job, she often taught level 400 classes on Macro Economics, as a junior. I told you, she is really smart. When she graduated she worked for a company as an economist, writing daily articles about assigned sections of the world, and parts of the United States. She wrote beautifully and was constantly being quoted or interviewed by major newspapers and publications. She was on her way. Then a company contacted her that is based in her favorite city, Philadelphia. She took the job, got a raise and is now living in her small house. The new job was exciting, her boss was well educated, everything was going well. Stuck As I stated, her boss was well educated, but as it turns out, on paper only. He went to the right schools and has an impressive pedigree, but, is also sort of a dolt. He doesn’t cause problems, he does his work competently, but only just so. The management of the company keeps him around, because again, he looks great on paper and causes no harm. But the company also has no plans of promoting him, and he is somewhat forgotten. Of course, Marie didn’t know any of this when she was hired, but her co-workers soon informed her of the situation. Many people saw her potential and tried to get her moved to another department, but her boss refused. Marie was doing much of his work along with hers. He had it great and didn’t want to lose her. He’s not that stupid. After a year of other people trying unsuccessfully to get Marie transferred to another department, they stopped trying. She gets paid just enough to cover her monthly expenses, but it is more than most companies will offer a new employee. And now she is stuck. She is caught in this forgotten abyss the company has formed around her paper smart, life stupid boss, and she cannot get out. Her mind is too active, her ambition too great to sit by in this nowhere job, but every attempt she makes to get out is thwarted by either the dolt’s umbrella or personal financial concerns. She is becoming disengaged, and this wondrously brilliant person, has been plateaued at the tender age of 27. The solution sounds easy doesn’t it? It did to me, either get re-assigned or get out. But getting re-assigned isn’t as easy as it sounds, especially when her immediate supervisor desperately wants to keep her, and getting out would mean getting out of everything, including her beloved home. I like Marie, she is the kind of person who could make a real positive impact on any company, and right now, she isn’t making any. This makes her angry, and it makes me angry too. And I don’t know who to blame. She didn’t know her supervisor was the poster boy of insubstantial, and I understand, that while being incredibly selfish, with Marie around, he’s got it pretty good. Co-workers tried, so they get a pass. And because Marie had the bad luck of being placed with the forgotten but good on paper worker, the higher ups have no idea of what they are missing. So I guess everyone is to blame a little, but no one too much. Listen folks, we need all the Marie(s) we can get. She is tough, brilliant, talented, makes quick decisions that incorporate future consequences, and she is being absolutely wasted. So bosses, I know you’re busy but look closer at what you already have. There are Marie(s) everywhere, find them. Immediate supervisors, stop being so selfish. Being generous may not pay immediate dividends, but will usually work out for you in the end. Too many companies are being crippled by the economy, you need to put the needs of the many ahead of your own. And Marie, don’t give up, it will break my heart if you do. I know it’s hard, but someone who can make a difference, will. If you have any specific questions or topics of particular interest you’d like our Experts to address, please let me know! Dr. Gregory House, the grumpiest, pride-filled character on television. He’s an equal opportunist dispenser of meanness. While there are many times in the show that House should be ashamed of his behavior, there have also been moments where that goodness buried deep inside of him, presents itself, and he does something that he can be proud of. Which is of course, what makes us obsessed with watching him. Pride can be a great thing and pride can be detrimental to your success. Too many people let pride get in the way of fulfilling their dreams. For example: getting a supplemental job to keep you afloat during slow times or asking for help. If you fall into any of the following “pride traps,” let me give you some suggestions to turn the pride that’s holding you back, into something you can be proud of.
If the idea of taking these actions is making you feel angry, bitter, resentful, and stubborn, DO THEM DESPITE your feelings! Feeling proud is a much better feeling. It’s easy to wind up grumpy and alone like House, if you let your pride diminish the special person you are. Allow yourself to feel proud today! My boss gave me a very expensive bottle of wine for the holidays, but didn’t get anyone else in my department anything. I am a single woman, he is a married man. What should I do? Thank him and give him a holiday card wishing him and his WIFE/FAMILY (if there are kids) a happy holiday and New Year. Then go about business as usual. I would rather live in a world where I deserve an expensive bottle of wine for my hard work then a world where I focus on being giving gifts for the “wrong reason.” If he actually hits on you, as a single woman, I’m sure you’ve been hit on before and know how to reject a man with grace and poise. The fact that he has a wife and is your boss makes it much easier to let him down carefully without bruising his ego. If he doesn’t let it go, you have a choice to make which may include human resources or finding a new job. I am a black gay man. If you can give me some advice about how to get back in the game. I have been going through this for the past 3 years. My career started as a production associate and I worked my way to manager/project manager of an on-air department at a very popular cable network. I spent 11 years working at this network until I got laid off 8 months into my new promotion job. Was it fair??? No but what is fair in life. It took me 10 years to make it to that position. While my white counter-parts became managers and directors in half the time. I was one of a handful of people of color that held the position of manager or higher. I have always been told if you work hard and have a passion for what you love…you will go far. I find in the business of television and film it is hard for people like me to get opportunities. The doors don’t open for us all the time. I hear a lot of companies talking about diversity but when I go for interviews I often observe a sea of white and maybe a couple of black, brown or Asian faces. How does the person of color get experience when no one is hearing your calls? As much as we like to say that we are color blind I hate to say some employers like to hire what they are familiar with or comfortable around. Especially when 9 of 10 times the person that is hiring is white. I can only blame the economy for so much. It would be good to hear your insight on my situation and render some solutions. There is only one sentence in this question that I will answer “give me some advice about how to get back in the game,” the rest of it, is only keeping you stuck and limiting your ability to get work. I still have to address the rest though: Having coached hundreds of people who fall into the “minority” category (which as a woman I fall under as well), I can tell you, that successful people focus on their end goal, and anything that is an obstacle (and EVERYONE has obstacles, no matter what their sex, religion, race, or sexual preference), they find a way through, over, or around it. I once moderated a panel for a diversity committee. So many of the questions where geared toward the prejudices in the industry. Interestingly enough, no one on the panel wanted to address these types of questions. All but one said the same thing, “Sure I’ve experienced it, but I just ignored it and kept focused on the work.” The “all but one” said, “if it’s happened to me, I never noticed. I believe I get hired because of the person I am and the work I do.” Sadly, many of the audience members didn’t want to listen to what the panel was saying, and kept interrogating them for proof of the reason ‘they’ were not being hired. I finally had to interject by pointing out that they had a wonderfully diverse panel of extremely successful people, and that their time would be better spent asking them questions about how they became so successful, not trying to dig up obstacles that clearly didn’t stop them. So, onto your advice: 1. Create a contact list of everyone you know in the industry, what they do, and rate how well you know them. Then analyze your list. Do you know enough people who are in positions to hire you? If so, are you their number one or two phone call when they have a position? If yes, do they have a position open? My guess is no. Therefore you have to determine who is missing from your contact list and 2. Create a target list of people you want to meet. If you’ve already done this, 3. it’s time to get business advice and guidance mentors as well as meet a LOT more people. 4. Go to at least one networking event each week. 5. Volunteer to help in companies where no positions are open, but where you want to create relationships. These are the basics of getting work and you keep doing them over and over until you meet the person who is going to give you your next job. And for you in particular, I recommend you speak to people in other industries who are successful, as well. The reason is because you made a statement about “the business of television and film” and you will learn that there are obstacles to getting jobs in any industry. The obstacles may be different, or maybe not, but the one thing that will play a major factor in you getting back in the game with be a change in your outlook moving forward, staying focused on the job of getting the job, and then being successful at that job. I say you focus on staying “in the handful.” You made it that far once, which means it can be done.
