Cynopsis: DIGITAL
12/07/10

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, December 7, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

With nearly 17 million paying monthly subscribers, Netflix is getting a little too powerful for comfort for many in Hollywood and a competing service could be just what the doctor ordered. Fast growing HDTV maker Vizio and video game delivery firm OnLive are planning to launch a new streaming movie service to compete with Netflix’s offering, according to a report in the WSJ. OnLive is planning to allow users to access movies beginning in 2011 through a subscription service and “other pricing schemes,” according to the piece, which was unable to get confirmation from Vizio. The TV manufacturer has been one of the more forward thinking in terms of broadband-delivered content, with moves that include launching its own well-stocked internet apps platform.

Figuring female sports fans would like their own tailored online destination, ESPN launched a new blog called espnW.com to pave the way for a full-featured site set to launch next spring. The site incorporates video and text posts from female sports columnists and bloggers, pro athletes and expert contributors, along with news from multiple ESPN and partner outlets. Laura Gentile, VP espnW and ESPN RISE Digital and Publishing, is managing the new vertical.

PBS is reaching out to young budding filmmakers with a new mentorship program that encourages middle and high school students nationwide to use digital media tools to create compelling stories about issues and concerns important to them. The website of the POV documentary series will oversee Project VideoScape’s call for entries while the PBS Teachers site will provide materials for educators. Project VoiceScape will also provide select PBS member stations with funds to support student-created media and training from KQED’s Digital Media Center. Adobe is providing software for the initiative.

Facebook has finally updated their user profile interface to help consolidate your personal information and improve the process of discovering common interests between friends and acquaintances. A new capsule at the top will summarize vital facts gleaned from your profile, including location, education, job and relationship status, allowing you to detail work or educational experiences that can help others track you down. The friends list has also been amended to help prioritize your closest chums. (Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed by Lesley Stahl on CBS’ 60 Minutes on Sunday about the changes and Mark dodged privacy questions a little more skillfully this time around.)

Fans of the cancelled SyFy show Caprica can help apply salve to their wounds with GSP Network‘s new social networking/reality dram Who The Frak?, starring Richard Hatch from the original Battlestar Galactica series. The site will feature free webisodes of the show in 5-15 minute streams, allowing viewers to create their own webspace of the show and interact with other fans via live video rooms and chat.

Popular microblogging platform Tumblr was downed by a database cluster issue for more than a day, beginning Sunday evening.

Three new upwardly revised ad projections were released yesterday:

  • WPP’s Group M raised its forecast of global ad spending from 3.5% to 5.9%, with 2011 expected to grow by another 5.8% to reach $500 billion for the first time
  • Interpublic’s Magna Global raised its projection from 5.6% to 6.9% growth for 2010 with an average annual increase of 6.3% expected through 2016
  • eMarketer now projects a 10.5% increase in US online ad spending next year, followed by double-digit growth every year through 2014 when online spending will reach $40.5 billion. Online video advertising will remain the fastest-growing format throughout the period

Instead of buying the Groupon rival outright, Amazon announced a $175 million strategic investment in LivingSocial, an online coupon start-up that has attracted 10 million subscribers in more than 120 territories. Amazon has also launched a new DNS hosting service dubbed Route 53, aimed at customers of its cloud hosting services. Amazon Route 53 can be used to route end users to multiple AWS services including Amazon EC2, an Amazon Elastic Load Balancer or an Amazon S3 bucket.

Publishers Clearing House has acquired online casual and branded game publisher Funtank LLC and its Candystand.com. The site, acquired by Funtank from Wrigley in 2008, will continue to be led by co-founders, James Baker and Scott Tannen in Tribeca.

The WGA, East is lining up to support the FCC’s weak-willed net neutrality efforts with a campaign that includes a website and video that encourages audiences to email the 5 FCC commissioners.

Yet another cable industry entity is making the case that cord cutting is a myth. ESPN released the results of a national analysis of Nielsen people meter data that suggests only .28% of homes have dropped their cable packages but kept their internet connections. People who were heavy or medium sports viewers, who account for 83% of sports viewing and 90% of viewing on ESPN, showed zero cord cutting, according to the survey. A recent Sanford C. Bernstein analysis estimated a net loss of 330k cable customers in the past 6 months, many of who have turned to over-the-air and broadband for their entertainment.

After striking out with the expensive Nexus One, Google announced it is partnering with Samsung to develop another smartphone launching later this month with a brand new “Gingerbread” version of the Android mobile OS. The Nexus S will sport a 4″ contoured display, front and rear-facing cameras for video calls and a 1GHz processor. Gingerbread will add a new keyboard and text selection tool, VoIP/SIP calling, improved copy/paste functionality and gyroscope sensor support. The phone will retail for $200 with a two-year contract with T-Mobile.

CBS Radio
unveiled a new ad supported Radio.com mobile app for the iPhone/iPod Touch offering access to over 600 channels from CBS Radio, AOL Radio and Yahoo Music. Programming genres include music, news, talk, sports and custom channels. As with Pandora, users are allowed to skip up to 6 songs per hour.

The new free multidenominational Ultimate Holiday App from Hallmark Channel helps you manage your gift giving, allowing users to build custom gift lists from their address books. Hallmark Channel programming is also highlighted.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Ericsson
announced Chairman Michael Treschow will step down within the next two years. A nomination committee has been appointed to propose a new board chairman at the annual general meeting in 2011 or 2012.

Burbank, CA-based stereoscopic 3D technology provider 3ality Digital has named Steve Schklair as its CEO. Steve had served as CEO of technology development and production subsidiary of the company for the past 5 years.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Google followed through with its promise to launch its twice-delayed eBook store by the end of the year, offering hundreds of thousands of popular electronic books compatible with most popular eBook readers including the Kindle, Apple iOS, Nook, Sony Reader and Android operating systems. You must download a free app on the site to make it work for Android and Apple devices, or you can always read Google eBooks through the site’s web reader. Google highlights the newest arrivals, top rated and top selling titles – priced in line with other eBook stores – along with a smattering of free classics to whet readers’ appetites. More than 4,000 publishers are supplying the outlet upon launch including Random House, Simon & Schuster and Macmillan. While the launch is going to again increase Google’s power in the media business, it is being largely welcomed by publishers and authors as a way to maintain competition and balance in a marketplace that Amazon and Apple are eager to dominate. Indie booksellers, who can sign on to sell Google e-books on their websites using the Google platform, probably have the most to gain.
