Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 6th, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

To the People who read Cover Letters:

First of all, we apologize, your job sounds terrible.  Reading cover letters all day must be difficult to say the least.  We understand that your job is about the elimination process more than the hiring process.  We, as the authors of the cover letters, would like to make sure we are not eliminated for the wrong reasons; reasons you may have learned in school but simply are not true or no longer apply.

Such as …

Split Infinitives.  Since A Plea for the Queen’s English by Henry Alford, it has been forbidden to split an infinitive.  But Mr. Alford’s reasoning was misguided and wrong.  His basis for the rule was that in Latin, you cannot split an infinitive.  Okay, but English is a Germanic language, not Latin.  Furthermore, Mr. Alford decided that to was part of the infinitive, which it is not.  An infinitive is the simplest form of a verb.  That’s it. 

Grammarians have tried their best to debunk this rule, citing a split infinitive is often preferable over a non-split infinitive.  How so?  My plumber threatened to more than double his fee.  According to Alford, this is a split infinitive, but the sentence states the intention of the plumber in a clear and concise manner.  It is difficult to convey the same meaning without splitting the infinitive. 

Starting a sentence with And, But or Or.  English teachers were fond of telling students that conjunctions were meant to connect elements within a sentence, but not sentences themselves.  Oops.  Don’t overdo it, but there is nothing wrong with starting a sentence with conjunctions.  And in case you think all conjunctions are short words, you can also start a sentence with because or however.

Do we really need to use Datum anymore?  Can’t we all agree that data can be singular or plural?

None, meaning no one, is always singular.  Again, oops.  The origins of none is actually “not any of a number of things” and its usage is more commonly plural.

And we have stated this before, but you can end a sentence with a preposition.  There are very few grammarians who still enforce the idea that you cannot. 

Finally, the idea of two spaces after each period has gone by the way of the typewriter, same for indenting paragraphs.  Not to say either one of these are wrong, but they are dated and not necessary.

So please, don’t eliminate us because you’ve spotted one of these “errors”.  They are not incorrect, but eliminating us because of them, is.

Find “Insiders” to Open Doors During Your Job-Search Process

With the economy stubbornly stuck in neutral and even more graduates flooding the work force, the competition for available positions is fiercer than ever.  In 2010, the average number of applicants for each job was nearly 70, up from 48 in 2009.  I shudder to think what the latest statistics would reveal.

If you’re conducting a job search, you should assume you will be vying against as many as 100 worthy competitors, many who are as qualified perhaps even more so than you are.

So how can you stand out from the crowd?  By showcasing your leadership skills.  Hiring managers aren’t just looking to fill slots, they are searching for future leaders who can help them take their companies to the next level.

What traits are they looking for?

Recently, PsychTests.com, a firm specializing in personality, career, and IQ assessments, conducted a survey into what separated great leaders from the also-rans.  Here are the traits that topped their list:

Goal setting. Prospective employers look for new hires who can set goals and create a workable action plan to achieve them.

Motivating others. The ability to motivate others to work toward a common goal is a key leadership trait that will make you stand out to the hiring manager.  Provide examples of times that you have rallied the troops to get them excited about completing an important project.

Coaching.  A good leader is willing and able to help the other members of their team develop to their greatest potential.

Problem solving.  Every project has its obstacles.  A leader will attack them with gusto and refuse to let them get in the way of meeting the deadline for completing the project and achieving his or her objectives.

Vision. In order to lead, you must be able to see where you are going.  How clear is your vision when you are working on a project?  Can you visualize the end result?

Setting an example.  Leaders lead by example.  Your team is looking to you to demonstrate the behaviors that they should be emulating.  What do they see?

Agreeableness.  The ability to get along well with others is a key trait that human resources managers look for when deciding which candidate to hire for a position.  Conflicts between employees will make their own jobs more difficult.

Conscientiousness.  Attention to details is an important leadership trait.  You don’t want to micromanage everything, but you do need to be a careful planner and be diligent about following up to ensure that everything is on schedule.

Open-mindedness.  Good leaders are open to new ideas and thoughts. They listen to input from others instead of limiting themselves to what they think they know.

The more you personify these leadership traits throughout your job search, the more likely you’ll stand out from the dozens of others fighting for the same position.

If a company is using a scanner for its resumes, does a two page resume hurt my chances?

The total number of pages in your resume is unimportant when a company is using a scanner to process incoming resumes. Keyword density is much more important than the length of the resume itself. Electronic resumes are generally between one and three pages in length and contain a large number of keywords chosen to be applicable to the job you are applying for.

Keywords are words or phrases that are used to describe your qualifications and experience as well as your personality traits.  An employer will determine which keywords to look for in the resumes.  The resumes that are received electronically will be prescreened for the desired keywords before they are looked at by human eyes. It is important to have as many keywords as possible in your resume to improve your chances of getting your resume seen by a human.

I’ve been hearing more about executive biographies, what are they and who are they for? Should everyone looking for a job have one?

An executive summary is a one-page summary of an executive’s work history utilized by company executives who are seeking new employment.  Executive summaries are not for every business job seeker but are more common for an executive with an extensive employment background.

An executive summary is written in the third person and highlights an executive’s career progression.  It does not include bulleted points commonly found in resumes but is written in paragraph form and is restricted to one page of writing.  An executive summary should not include contact information and it is unnecessary to emphasize text with underlining or bolding words or phrases.

~ RECAP: THIS WEEK IN EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Glenn Katz was named CEO of Spacenet Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. Glenn has been serving as President/COO of Spacenet since 2006 will take on his new duties as CEO starting January 1, 2012. Andreas M. Georghiou, the company’s present CEO will become an external advisor to Gilat’s executive management team.

Eagle Television Sales, a unit of the Katz Television Group upped John Dimeglio based in Atlanta and Russell Fielder located in Dallas to VP/Group Sales Manager. Additionally, Michael Weiss was promoted to VP/Director of Sales in New York.

Beginning in early December, Alina Falcon takes on the new position as SEVP/News and Alternative Programming with Telemundo Media. Alina joins Telemundo from Univision Communications where she served as President/News. In her new position, Alina will oversee news and public affairs programs at Telemundo in addition to the news programming strategy at local Telemundo stations. She will further manage Telemundo’s domestic and international news bureaus and all on-air news talent development. Alina’s scope will also include supervising Telemundo’s alternative and reality programming as well as specials. Alina will report to Emilio Romano, President, Telemundo Media.

Spanish-language TV network, Vme announced President/CEO Carmen DiRienzo will depart from her position on December 31, 2011. Carmen will continue to serve on Vme Media Inc.’s Board of Directors as an independent director and will support the company’s new management transition and oversee specific projects. Vme also announced Alvaro Garnica was appointed as GM to manage the daily operations of the company. ??Univision Communications Inc. tapped Ignacio Meyer as VP/Business Development in charge of developing brand extensions and business opportunities for the company’s clients. Based in Miami, Ignacio will report to Rick Alessandri, SVP/Business Development. In addition, Luis Patino was promoted to SVP/Univision Television Group. Luis will now head station operations, sales, news, marketing and promotions for Univision Communications Inc.’s O&O TV stations in San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield, Phoenix, Tucson, San Antonio and Austin.

The premium entertainment channel, VOD and online service, EPIX owned by Viacom Inc, MGM Studios and Lionsgate hired Kirk Iwanowski as CMO effective immediately.  Kirk will have oversight on developing and implementing marketing strategies and campaigns surrounding EPIX movies and programs aiming at consumers, affiliates and industry partners.  Kirk previously served as SVP/Marketing at FilmDistrict. 

ION Media Networks is establishing a political division as part of its sales team and as of tomorrow Robert Russo and William O’Shea are joining as VPs/Political Sales.  Robert and William are charged with selling air time for political advertising nationally for ION Television as well as locally for its ION stations.  Robert will be based in New York and William will be located in Washington, D.C.

Worldwide independent agency holding company, Project: WorldWide (Project) specializing in engagement marketing announced Jeff Rutchik, Sharon Napier and Mike Rossi are joining the company’s Strategic Leadership Team (SLT).  The threesome will work with other SLT members in other global markets to further expand the Project brand among other duties.  Jeff, Sharon and Mike will all report to Robert G. Vallee, Jr., Chairman/CEO.  Jeff and Mike will continue in their present roles at Project’s agency George P. Johnson (GPJ); Jeff serves as EVP/Client Services Worldwide at GPJ while Mike is EVP/Operations at GPJ. Sharon will continue as CEO of Project’s branding and advertising business, Partners + Napier (P+N).

Independent studio Vuguru, founded by Michael Eisner’s Tornante Company tagged Scott Nocas as Head/Distribution and Marketing.  At Vuguru, Scott will report to Larry Tanz, President.

Judy Mitchell takes on the new position as VP/Affiliate Marketing and Co-Op at Warner Bros. Domestic Television (WBDTD).  Judy will manage and organize communication of local station marketing, media and promotion strategies internally and to affiliates.  She will work in tandem with the sales and WBDTD/Telepictures’ marketing groups on various local levels among other duties. 

Effective immediately, A+E Network appointed Neil Klasky as SVP/West Coast Legal and Business Affairs.  Neil will manage the production and talent negotiations for scripted programming on behalf of the company’s networks.  Based in Los Angeles, Neil will report to Doug Jacobs, SVP/General Counsel, A+E Networks.

Cedric Foster advances to VP/GM of Spike Digital Entertainment where he heads the Spike digital business encompassing the digital brand, content and programming strategy and the overall creative goals of Spike Digital Entertainment.  Cedric has been with Spike since 2006.

The CW promoted Rick Haskins to the newly-minted position of EVP/Marketing and Digital Programs. Rick will work closely with the creative community to create and produce new entertainment content custom-designed for The CW’s digital and emerging platforms including online, mobile and social media. Rick will also work in tandem with the network’s creative executives and producers to create digital offshoots of The CW’s new and current series. Rick continues to report to Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW.

Disney/ABC Television Group announced it has employed Chris Thomes as VP/Digital Media Studios for the ABC Television Network. Chris is charged with general management and supervision of branded digital content. He will also oversee creative development of content made by outside producers encompassing webisodes, original series and special event live programming for Disney/ABC Television Group’s roster of broadcast and cable networks including ABC Entertainment, ABC Daytime, ABC Family, SOAPnet and Disney Channel. Chris will report to Albert Cheng, EVP/Chief Product Office, Digital Media, Disney/ABC Television Group.

Former MasterCard Worldwide executive Bill Cronin was appointed VP/Marketing for USA TODAY. Bill will manage strategic marketing, events, special projects and more involving marketing for USA TODAY. Based in McLean, VA, Bill will report to Sandra Micek, SVP/Marketing.

NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment named Steve Dolcemaschio as President of its reality studio, currently called Comcast Entertainment Studios. The studio will be renamed in early 2012. Steve has served as COO of E! Entertainment and will take the next several months to transition out of that role to his new position. In his new role, Steve will manage the production studio which develops and produces reality and topical content for several cable networks including E!’s The Soup, Fashion Police and Ice Loves Coco as well as The Style Network’s Giuliana & Bill and GSN’s Baggage. Steve will report to Bonnie Hammer, Chairman, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and Cable Studios. Jay James as EVP/Development will continue in his position and will report to Steve Dolcemaschio.

Premium music video and entertainment platform, VEVO elevated Alex Kisch to SVP/Business Affairs and Business Development. Alex will now be part of VEVO’s senior management team that heads the development of the company’s worldwide growth goals and will specifically head VEVO’s content acquisition, licensing, syndication and distribution activities in addition to the company’s daily legal affairs as head of the department. Based in New York, Alex reports to Rio Caraeff, President/CEO.

Beginning December 19, Marty Linck will become Program Director for CBS RADIO’s KEZK and KYKY in St. Louis. Most recently, Marty was Program Director for WCJK radio in Nashville.

Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. (SBS) named Jackie Nosti-Cambo as VP/Business Analytics for the company.  In her new role, Jackie will hone in on the business practices of SBS in all of its markets.  She will also help enact new insights and analysis to improve business performance to grow the revenue in all markets.  Jackie has been with SBS since 1992.

UK-based documentary and reality production company, Nutopia has added several to its senior management team: Nick Metcalfe, previously a senior member of the Darlow Smithson creative group, becomes Executive Producer to manage the company’s five-part series How We Invented the World.  Josh Wilkins, currently Series Line Producer for a Nutopia project for HISTORY in the US, will take on additional duties as Deputy Head/Production in charge of large-scale projects and will work with Nick Metcalfe on the series How We Invented the World project.  Also joining Nutopia is Fiona Scott as Head/Development.  Furthermore, Harvey Shackleton was hired as CFO joining from ITV Studios where he served as Director/Finance, Non Fiction.  Rupert Frisby was also tagged as Legal and Business Affairs Consultant joining from talkbackTHAMES where he was Commercial Director.

Multi-platform casual games company, Oberon Media hired Isaac Josephson as VP/Product.  In his new role, Isaac will be in charge of ongoing improvement of Oberon Media’s offering to enable the best gaming experience for its customers.  Isaac will also head the company’s Blaze platform.  He will report to Megan Barbour, SVP/Production, Marketing and Business Intelligence.

Independent worldwide marketing and technology agency, LBi tapped Christine Peterson as Director/Media, effective immediately.  Based in New York, Christine will report to Judith Carr, LBi’s US President.

Brian Frons, President/Daytime for Disney/ABC Television Group is exiting the company when his contract expires at the end of January.  Vicki Dummer, SVP/Current Series and Specials, ABC Entertainment Group will replace Brian and has been promoted to EVP/Times Square Studios, Current Series and Specials.  Times Square Studios will now oversee ABC’s current daytime programming in addition to developing new non-scripted lifestyle and health programs for Daytime and Syndication.  Current programs under Times Square Studios include The View, General Hospital, The Chew, The Revolution, Katie and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.  LIVE! with Kelly will continue to fall under the ABC Owned Television Stations Group unit. Vicki will continue to report to Paul Lee, President, ABC Entertainment Group who adds Times Square Studios to his oversight roster.  Further additions include Abra Potkin as SVP/East Coast Programming and Development, Times Square Studios; Abra joins from CBS where she was News and Entertainment Development Executive.  Ann Lewis Roberts was also elevated to SVP/West Coast Current Programming and Development, Times Square Studios.  Abra and Ann will both report to Vicki Dummer.

Toronto-based worldwide television distributor Breakthrough Entertainment is adding feature film distribution with the formation of a dedicated film acquisition and sales division.  Marina Cordoni was named VP/Movies to spearhead this new film division and to manage all acquisition and distribution facets of the film unit.  The new unit will additionally manage theatrical feature distribution in Canada.  Marina has been with Breakthrough Entertainment since 2005.
