A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
GEORGE LOPEZ #1 with W18-49 & #2 with A18-49 GEORGE LOPEZ CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 20, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. February 17, 2009. Mark it on your calendar – it’s important. That’s the date TV will be completely digital; analog will be gone. As a consumer, that gives you a little over three years to save up for that new digital-ready TV, and for that 15% of the population who are not subscribed to cable or satellite service, they’ll have to do that as well, or purchase a set-top converter. The days of rabbit ears are clearly numbered. * MORE GOOD STUFF *Running right into the fray next February will be the semi-finals of American Idol. The “fray” of course is Thursday nights, and Fox has scheduled the semi-finals results shows to air on Thursdays in February, starting on the 23rd. Here’s how it works: beginning mid-February sweep, the final 24 women will compete on Tuesdays 8-9p, the final 24 men compete on Wednesdays 8-9p, and the results show will air Thursdays 8-9p. This schedule will carry on for about three weeks. The finals then begin a month later on March 14 when there are just 12 left. That’s the good news. The bad news for The O.C. followers is this move displaces the drama for at least three weeks. Fox has not yet announced if The OC will slide to 9p, or if its current 9p program slate of That 70’s Show and Stacked will remain at 9-10p. Fox, of course, also hopes this will be bad news for its biggest competitors: Survivor, Will & Grace/Four Kings, and Dancing with the Stars. TLC has ordered up a second season of Miami Ink, with 10 new episodes. Also a special Miami Ink: Hawaii is scheduled for January 8 at 9p, and then the regular series kicks off on January 10 at 10p. MTV2 has scheduled the return of its Sic ’em Fridays programs, and kicking off the block will be a new season of Wildboyz starting January 6 at 9p. At 930p look for the premiere of Team Sanchez, which follows four guys – three Welshmen, one Londoner – as they try to top each other’s sense of humor. One week prior to its on-air launch, Wildboyz will have an exclusive preview online at www.MTV2.com and on MTV Overdrive broadband network on December 30th. The WB has cut a deal with Verizon wherein it will supply video clips from many of its programs to Verizon wireless subscribers. Shows included are Everwood, Supernatural and Gilmore Girls, as well as many shorts from the Warner Bros. Looney Toons library including Bugs Bunny, Scooby-Doo and The Flintstones among others. The clips adn shorts will be made available on the Verizon V Cast service, available in 172 markets. Univision will join Nielsen Media Research‘s national TV ratings service, the Nielsen Television Index (NTI), making it the first Spanish-language television network to be included in this service, adding its network to a lineup which includes CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, WB, and UPN. Previously, Univision subscribed only to Nielsen’s National Hispanic Television Index (NHTI), which measures only Hispanic audiences. Univision will also continue to subscribe to NHTI until September 2007, when the National People Meter (NPM) sample, upon which NTI is based, will become the sole sample for both English-language and Spanish-language media. Data for Univision will be available in the NPM sample and corresponding reports and software systems beginning December 26, 2005. The HorseTV Channel debuts on Grande Communications in San Marcos, Texas, on its digital platform (Channel 280) starting next Wednesday, December 28, 2005. The Retro Television Network has added KQUP/Spokane to its group of stations carrying Retro TV Network programming in primetime, as of January 1st. The Retro TV Network is carried in many markets across the country including Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Buffalo, Little Rock and Denver. Comcast launched Si TV on its Detroit system on December 15. The network currently has affiliation deals with Adelphia, Comcast Cable, Cox Communications, Grande Communications and Time Warner Cable in addition to being part of the America’s Top 120 package on EchoStar’s DISH Network. Note to Self: Anytime anyone puts Robert Redford and Paul Newman on the same screen, I’ll be there. How can you not? By hook or by crook, I’ll be there tomorrow night at 10 on Sundance’s show Iconoclasts when Redford “interviews” Newman and talks about salad dressing, camp, fast cars, and maybe even a little about the movies. It’s the little sideways glances that always get me. All good stuff. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *With the return of Fox’s 24 comes two additional actors, Stephen Spinella and Jayne Atkinson. Season #5 begins with a four hour, two night event starting Sunday, January 15. TBS has ordered a pilot of a scripted comedy series called My Boys from Sony Pictures TV, exec producers Gavin Palone and Jamie Tarses, and written by Betty Thomas. The story is about a young and single sports writer for a large Chicago newspaper and all of the boys in her life. Casting is set to begin in February. This marks the first scripted for the network after it launched its TBS – Very Funny banner a couple of years ago. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *HIT Entertainment announced the appointment of Bill Burke as VP/Brand Management. In this new role, Bill oversees the brand development of HIT Entertainment’s premiere properties, as well as brand management for new content development. He will be based in the company’s New York office and reports to Jamie Cygielman, SVP/Consumer Products. Lynn Picard has been named to the newly created position of EVP/Interactive Entertainment at Lifetime Entertainment Services. The announcement was made by Betty Cohen, President/CEO. Lynn has also been promoted to President/Ad Sales, Lifetime while retaining her duties as GM, where she is responsible for interfacing with all departments within the company regarding the day-to-day operations of the network. And if that’s not enough, Lifetime Entertainment Services has upped Louise Henry Bryson to President/Distribution and Affiliate Business Development. Louise will retain her role as EVP/GM, Lifetime Movie Network, a post she assumed in October. * RATINGS *Sunday — A18-49 Analysis: The broadcast networks with the exception of WB, carried an address by President Bush from 9-9:20p on Sunday evening. Each network carried its full programming schedule before and after the President, running in full although on a 20 minute delay (920-1120p). With that said, the ratings shows below are fast affiliate ratings, and as such are the ratings for the hours of 9-10p and 10-11p, not the programs which ran 20 minutes off the clock. Therein lies the nature of fast affiliate ratings versus final numbers. Fox delivered the win for the night with a 4.1/11 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research‘s fast affiliate ratings. CBS was #2 with a 3.2/8, followed by ABC 2.8/7, NBC 2.1/5, WB 1.4/4. At 7p NFL runover on Fox ruled the hour with a 4.2/12, and set up the Simpsons and War at Home nicely to post a win at the 8p hour with a 4.3/11. At 9p when the President spoke, ABC and Fox tied for the full half hour with an 8 share, CBS had a 7 share and NBC a 5 share. Picking up at 930p, Fox continues to lead with a 4.1/9 while ABC trailed by a share point. ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy won the 10p hour with a 3.7/9, while CBS and NBC were close behind, each posting an 8 share.
