Good morning – it’s Tuesday, August 3, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Questions not to ask during Interviews
I recently had a long talk with a hiring manager at a mid-sized company. We talked about many things, and I asked what type of questions do you like to hear from prospective employees? He laughed and said, “The ones you don’t want to hear are much more common.” He gave me a couple of examples, I thought there is no way people actually ask these questions. He assured me they did, and provided me with a crazy list of questions asked by interviewees, that I am now passing on to you for your education, but mostly for your entertainment:
What perks does the company offer?
Will I get a raise every year?
How many sick days do I get?
Are lunches free here?
Does the lunch hour include the time getting and returning from a restaurant?
How soon am I eligible for vacation?
What is the policy about dating co-workers?
How will the company ensure my growth within the company?
Does the medical insurance kick in right away?
Do you have a bonus schedule I can take with me?
Any chance this company will shut its doors with the next year or so?
Will I be warned about drug tests?
I see a lot of women around here, is the boss a female?
When will you call and tell me when I start?
Can I talk to another interviewer? I don’t like you.
What drugs do you test for?
Is there a bar that a lot of employees go to?
How firm is the 9am starting time?
Will I get to leave early on Fridays?
My weekends are pretty important to me, I won’t have to work on Saturdays will I?
Do I get overtime for when I work at home?
Can your secretary get me some coffee?
Do you have any gum?
What is your typical severance package?
Are meetings mandatory?
Will my computer activity be monitored here?
Do I have to wear a tie everyday?
Do you guys pay for gym memberships?
All of these questions were asked multiple times. I know none of you or anyone you know would ever ask questions like these during an interview, but all these questions have one thing in common: what can you do for me? The questions you want to ask during an interview should all be concerned with how can you help the company; if they do not, don’t ask them.
The Economy
For the first time, the managerial hiring numbers are higher than before the recession, according to the newest CareerCast.com/JobSerf Employment Index. The July Index rose 14.3 points to 106.9. Even the West, which has been hit the hardest during this time, gained 8.9 points to 88.6.
“The upward trend in managerial hiring is a positive indicator of job growth…managerial recruitment could be the leading edge indicator of improvement in all levels of employment,” Jay Martin, COO of JobSerf.

Disrupting the Ordinary: Creating Yourself as a New Thought Leader
by Kristen Moeller, MS
As an executive, often the key to your success was your ability to shake things up, to think outside the box and to go against the grain. Now, the external circumstances may have changed possibly you lost your job; or were demoted due to budget cuts; or perhaps you are in the same position but the company has been restructured and the work environment has altered dramatically. What’s important to consider is that while the external circumstances may have changed, you have not lost your inherent wisdom and hard-earned leadership abilities. To remember this, you may need to shake things up for yourself. It is tempting to slip into the culture of complaining. Yet, that is not who you really are. This is the time to step up and disrupt what is ordinary. It’s ordinary to be complacent, to complain about the economy or the state of the world. It’s ordinary to complain about the way things are so much conversation these days can be filed under the “ain’t it awful” variety. Everyone indulges in this sometimes but you can choose something else.
The world is changing. A new type of thinking is emerging. Our cultural values are shifting we are embracing sustainability, personal responsibility and authenticity. In this emerging climate, you are in a position to be at the leading edge. Why, you ask. Because who you are, is a leader. No matter what your job title says, you have the potential to lead this new conversation. You are in a position to alter the drift; to change how things go; to make a difference for your future and for future generations to come.
Disrupting the ordinary means disrupting the status quo.
Start by looking at what is needed in your personal life. What have you been settling for? What needs to shift to be more aligned with who you are as a leader? Then look to your current or former company. How can you make a difference there? Inquire into what is needed in the industry as a whole. What hasn’t been working for a long time? What hasn’t been said that needs to be spoken? What needs to change? What foundation can be built now that will create a sustainable future? What are the opportunities from this crisis? When the dust settles, the world will look different. You can be a creator in this shift or a complainer. What is your choice to be?
Kristen Moeller, author of the bestselling, self-help book, “Waiting for Jack,” (www.waitingforjack.com) takes readers through the process of no longer waiting for something to happen and teaches them how to experience their own power, strength, courage, commitment and vision as they go through this transition.

I have a question about turnover that I am hoping you can answer – it appears some companies constantly have postings for specific fields, is this indicative to high turnover and should be a red flag?
Or could it be opportunities for growth into other areas of the company?
Is that a question that I can ask a potential employer? Thanks so much and keep up the great work!
I would definitely ask the potential employer that question, as well as any other question that may illuminate any area that would otherwise be a source of concern for you. Remember, you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. And, it’s interesting to note that you asked the same question from both sides of the coin, i.e. ‘red flag’ or ‘opportunity’. Now, here is where I get direct with you about your questions.
Be sure you are asking the question from a place of curiosity and neutrality. If you enter the interview or ask your questions from a place of fear and suspicion, guess what you are likely to find. Not to mention, that is what you will likely create in their listening. In other words, if you are looking for “red flags”, you will probably find them, and so will they. As one of my mentors says, “Always question, never doubt”.
All online applications now ask for racial profiles — and of course, I’m always the “Male”,”Non-Latino White” in the group.
They all give you the opportunity to opt-out or decline to reply, but I wonder: does it truly not matter if I don’t answer (as the sites claim) — ? Is opting out an automatic admission of “White”ness, or “Male”ness? Is not answering held against me?
The short answer to this question is, you get to decide. There really is no way to know how they will use the information. My bias would be to say that you could leave it blank if you want–I can’t imagine that they would believe that every blank answer was a “stubborn white male”. Also, you could consider (as in my answer to the previous person’s question), where you are coming from–are you overly worried? Are you feeling guilty for being that “token” white male? Are you overcompensating? Or are you just curious?
