Cynopsis: DIGITAL

08/03/10

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 3, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Product planners of Microsoft‘s Internet Explorer web browser initially wanted to design the software to make it easy for users to avoid being tracked by marketers online. But the company’s brass decided in the end such controls would make it harder for it to profit from ads, according to a WSJ report. (Current IE versions require users to turn on privacy settings that block cookies from being installed each time you boot up the software.) The story has the online ad industry on the defensive, at a time when legislators are considering whether or not it will be necessary to codify rules regarding online tracking. Microsoft also feels unfairly singled out by the piece, as all other competing browsers, apart from Apple’s Safari, follow the same practice. (The Journal focuses on IE partly because it is still the dominant browser; it has lost market share in recent years but still enjoys over 60% of the market.)

In one of the farthest-reaching retrans deals to date, CBS inked a 10-year agreement with Comcast securing retransmission consent of CBS TV stations on the MSO’s systems through 2020. The deal, which also includes linear and on demand carriage of Showtime’s full suite of networks, the Smithsonian Channel and CBS College Sports, will also bring Showtime content to Comcast’s newly-rebranded Xfinity TV TV Everywhere site for the first time, making it the first authentication-required site to feature both HBO and Showtime shows.

FOX
announced it will begin delivering promotional and added show content for all of its prime time shows including Glee, Fringe and Lone Star via a new program dubbed Fox Codes. Alternatively known as quick response codes, (also used by CBS and several print magazines) the bar codes allow fans to access more info about FOX shows by snapping a picture of the code with their smartphone.

Online marketing has become an essential part of the marketing mix for several product categories and marketers must carefully consider balancing online with other mediums to achieve maximum synergistic effect, according to a new study developed by MarketShare Partners released by the IAB. The paper concludes that marketers should:

  • Carefully measure the impact and ROI of all investments both online and off
  • Ensure that the mix incorporates an appropriate component for interactive advertising
  • Match the media driver with the message
  • Leverage unique aspects of interactive media, from far reaching to targeted and granular
  • Choose search terms judiciously
  • Utilize interactive channels as a source of info about your product

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is at it again, this time looking into anticompetitive practices of eBook publishers Apple and Amazon. In letters sent to each company, he objects to agreements made with large publishers including Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, HarperCollins and Penguin that give them “most favored nation” status.

Japan mobile phone giant NTT DoCoMo announced it will acquire the remaining shares of mobile software company PacketVideo it doesn’t already own from NextWave Wireless Inc for $111.6 million. (DoCoMo had already purchased 35% of PacketVideo in July 2009.) PacketVideo will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTT DoCoMo and will operate as an autonomous operation under current President and CEO, Dr. James Brailean.

In a sign of further consolidation in the CDN market, Content Delivery Network Limelight acquired Seattle-based video publishing and analytics firm Delve Networks for an undisclosed amount. Delve’s cloud-based platform, which includes hosting, encoding, management and ad components, will be folded into Limelight’s mobility platform and EyeWonder product offerings. The start-up plans to remain in Seattle.

Visitors (and residents) to Dubai and other United Arab Emirates cities will soon have to leave their BlackBerrys behind, as the country’s regulators have ordered telecom companies to block data access to the device over security concerns. The smartphone’s strict email security has been one of its chief appeals to the business community, but nations such as the UAE and India have voiced concerns they will be unable to monitor messages for national security reasons. BlackBerry maker Research in Motion issued a statement assuring customers that their data was secure.

Timed to coincide with the season finale of Real Housewives of New York City spinoff Bethenny Getting Married? on Aug. 5, Bravo has developed an iPad app that enables viewers to watch and interact with show. iPad users can utilize the app to order up full episodes from iTunes, view video clips, read blogs, share content on Facebook or Twitter or join the show’s Talk Bubble viewing party to comment on live broadcasts or participate in live voting.

Following the launch of the ABC Player and ABC News iPad apps, Disney’s ABC Family introduced a free “Chatterbox” iPad app that enables viewers to interact with each other and wrap about the network’s shows including Pretty Little Liars and Huge. ABC says the ABC Player app has now been downloaded over 950k times (yielding 6 million episode starts), while the ABC News app has been downloaded 200k times.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Due to the nature of the programming, the genres of sports, game shows and reality TV have elbowed their way to the forefront of interactive TV applications. Women-targeted network Oxygen experienced a significant uptick in viewing after hosting live social viewing parties around shows such as Bad Girls Club. OxygenLive parties, which pulled comments from Facebook, Twitter and other platforms, helped boost ratings by 92% for adults 18-49 and 109% for females 18-49 on the East Coast. Now Oxygen has decided to redesign Oxygen.com and OxygenLive adding Facebook “like” integration and other social features. And for the first time, the network will aggregate OxygenLive comments on the air during the premier of spin off Bad Girls Club Miami tonight at 9 pm. Image clouds will identify which cast members and content are moving the needle most among viewers and producers will sprinkle in teases about upcoming scenes. Viewers will also be able to watch some full episodes of Oxygen original shows on oxygen.com and via select wireless partners for the first time beginning tomorrow. Sell-through episodes will also soon be available via iTunes, Amazon, Xbox and Zune. Now for the bad news: the video player still features instant on – annoying to users and a disingenuous way to pump up video views for advertisers.

Clarification: Mark Malkoff, star of a new upcoming channel on My Damn Channel, was a former staffer for the Colbert Report but never wrote for the show. It should be funny stuff – Mark says he’s already taped pieces with Taye Diggs and Chevy Chase.
