Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, August 28, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The Nielsen Company will now produce all national Hispanic ratings through its National People Meter panel, the same panel used to generate ratings for non-Hispanic networks. This move will even out the playing field between Spanish-language networks and English-language television, making a common ratings number for all national networks. In so doing, Nielsen will shelve its separate National Hispanic People Meter panel which has measured Hispanic households since 1992. Here are a few stats from Nielsen that showcase the growth of Hispanic television in recent years:

  • Number of Hispanic viewers in the U.S. equals 38.9 million or 14% of the total population in 2005-2006.
  • Ad spending on Spanish-language networks and cable television has grown to more than $3.05 billion in 2006, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus.
  • As of the 2006-2007 television season there are four national Spanish-language broadcast networks with a combined average primetime audience of 4.1 million Hispanic viewers.

Tonight’s Finales:
BET: Baldwin Hills at 10p
ESPN: The Bronx is Burning at 10p
