Cynopsis: Kids!



Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 24, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Discovery’s Science Channel launches its new commercial-free, middle school-targeted science programming block, Head Rush, this week.  Head Rush is a one-hour block that is designed to inspire and excite middle school kids (kids/tweens 11-14) about science/math/engineering/technology and how they are an important part of our daily lives.  Hosted by Kari Byron, from the series Mythbusters, the show features science related questions/answers and trivia with segments of Mythbusters, featuring Byron, video shorts, games and other Discovery talent woven throughout.  Head Rush airs Mondays-Fridays 4-5p and Saturdays 7-9a.  Head Rush is produced for the channel by Beyond Productions.


Cookie Jar Entertainment grows its production slate into tween and teen programming as it heads into production on new and existing series (animation and live-action) for various demos.

  • Mudpit (26×30) – Teletoon Canada picks up this mixed live-action/CGI animated video game-centric series.  The live-action portion of the series features an ensemble cast of teens in their “real lives,” while the animated portion features the group as avatars in a video game going up against various gaming challenges and online battles of the bands in the virtual world of Musika.  Mudpit was created by Jamie Waese (The Doodlebops, Gotta Catch Santa Claus), and Bruce Kalish (Aaron Stone, The Famous Jett Jackson) serves as showrunner, Jeff Biederman as co-executive producer (Overruled, Life with Derek, Totally Spies), with Chris Taylor as music supervisor.
  • Decidedly Debra – the live-action, single-camera comedy series is Cookie Jar’s first live-action project for Family Channel (Canada).  Decidedly Debra was created by Andrew Nicolls and Darrel Vickers.
  • Johnny Test – the animated series, created and executive produced by Scott Fellows (Big Time Rush), returns for a fifth season (for a total of 92×30).  The new season of Johnny Test will see the series continuing to air on Teletoon (Canada) and Cartoon Networks in various territories.

Disney picks up Monster Witness Relocation Program, a script by Ahmet Zappa and Michael Wilson, which is based on an original idea by Zappa, per Deadline. Zappa’s production banner, Monsterfoot Productions, will produce the movie with Overbrook Entertainment.  The project could be developed for Jaden Smith (Karate Kid), according to the report.


Nickelodeon adds My Wife and Kids (123×30), the sitcom stars Damon Wayans, to the Nick at Nite programming line lineup.  My Wife and Kids will air weeknights from 8-9 from Monday, August 30.  Wayans executive produced and created the series with Don Reo (Blossom, Everybody Hates Chris), as well as serving as a writer on the program.  My Wife and Kids was produced by ABC Studios (f/k/a Touchstone Television), was distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television, and aired in primetime on ABC from March 2001-May 2005.

Disney Family Movies ( www.disneyfamilymovies.com), a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service, teams with Comcast, Charter, Co, AT&T U-verse, Suddenlink, Verizon FiOS and Avail TVN Affiliates to offer costumers a free preview of the service over an extended Labor Day weekend promotion, Thursday-Monday, September 2-6, 2010.  The Disney Family Movies free preview will be hosted by Phylicia Rashad and will feature a collection of classic and new Disney movies, such as Pocahontas, Muppet Treasure Island, Disney-Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, Monster Truck Mater (short).


THQ and DreamWorks Animation partner to develop new videos games based on The Penguins of Madagascar, the animated series from Nickelodeon and DreamWorks Animation SKG, for Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DS systems.  The first of the game titles will release in November 2010.

Yo Gabba Gabba! Music is Awesome! Volume 2, featuring music from seasons I, II and II of Yo Gabba Gabba! Will release August 31, 2010, from music label Filter.  The album debuts in conjunction with the launch of the new live tour, KIA Motors Presents Yo Gabba Gabba! Live! There’s A Party In My City.  A deluxe edition of the CD, which includes bonus songs from the series, will be available on iTunes.  Those looking for a sampling of the album with a free download of Super Music Friends – Weezer’s track All My Friends Are Insects fan find it at www.yogabbagabba.com/freedownload .  Created by Christian Jacobs and Scott Shultz, Yo Gabba Gabba! is produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain Entertainment and airs on Nickelodeon.

With a second season of Dinosaur King, part of 4Kids Entertainment International’s library, set to launch on GMTV (UK) on November 1, 2010, new licensees have also come on board and/or growing their programs for the property across the UK and Europe.

  • In the UK, Signature Publishing, which joins Harper Collins in publishing efforts, launches the official Dinosaur King magazine at retail outlets this summer.  Tomy, the distributor of the Dinosaur King trading cards in the UK, plans to expand on its marketing strategy to include competitions in kids’ press and covermounts as well as online and TV advertising.
  • For the UK and Ireland – Samuel Eden and Son will produce socks, sleeper socks, sock gifts sets and phone socks, which will launch in spring 2011.  PMS International will launch plush, play balls and inflatable bashers and figures across Europe for spring 2011.  The plush toys will be available at UK theme parks Alton Towers and Thorpe Park.
  • Further new partners include Anubis Publications, which will launch a Dinosaur King magazine in Greece and Cyprus, and MC Productions, which recently debuted the first hard cover comic books for distribution in France and French-speaking Belgium and Switzerland.

Bradford Licensing inks a new partnership with Taiwan-based Bright Ideas Design to represent merchandising for the animated TV series Katz Fun in the US.  Targeted to K6-9, Katz Fun revolves around Katz, a tiger with magical powers, and a group of characters, each with their own unique strength, which together makes up Katz Fun.  The group comes together to protect Katz from the evil Dark Messenger.  The series uses action, adventure and comedy to underline themes such as friendship, teamwork, multi-cultural experience and confidence.  Possible licensing categories include digital games, home entertainment and DVD, toys, apparel, accessories and publishing.
