EchoStar’s Dish Network is launching the Pay TV industry’s latest TV Everywhere effort in public beta on Tuesday at a new portal called Dish Online. The authentication-required site will feature access to a variety of shows from cable networks such as TNT, MTV, Comedy Central, Syfy and Nat Geo, along with pay-per-view streaming of new release movies – some of which will be available to rent by non-subscribers, according to the NYTimes. The offering compliments Dish’s integration with subsidiary Sling Media’s SlingLoaded DVR, which enables viewers to watch live Dish Network TV on their PC or mobile phone.
Sony‘s expensive acquisition of online video site Crackle (then known as Grouper) may pay off yet as the company works to integrate Crackle content with the 50 million-member Playstation Network, per the NYTimes. Crackle has kept production values of its shows relatively high to date (averaging $1 million per webisode), but has only managed 4.1 million unique monthly viewers who watch an average of 39.4 minutes of video/month.
Fox is launching its first cable-based prime time VOD service in HD across most Cox Communications systems this week, reports Multichannel News – (not counting the offering of all 7 seasons of “24” featured on Comcast systems earlier this spring.) New episodes of shows such as Glee and The Simpsons will appear on Cox’s MyPrimetime service 12 hours after they premiere on air.
CBS.com is hosting a live one-hour webcast of “Fashion’s Night Out: The Show” from Lincoln Center, billed as the largest public fashion show in New York City history. The webcast will be hosted by Vogue Editor-at-Large Andre Leon Talley and fashion blogger and model Hanneli Mustaparta on Sept. 7 at 7 pm ET.
Digital distribution company New Video Digital has released the original Swedish thriller, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, as a digital PPV sell through title on Xbox and PlayStation.
Social mobile app directory Appolicious is strengthening its ties with Yahoo with the launch of yap.appolicious.com, a new co-branded user review site cataloguing Yahoo, iPhone, iPad and Android apps. Appolicious, founded by former Yahoo news executive Alan Warms, also launched a new search/discovery site for Android apps.
A new video ad network launched yesterday called Open Book Video, named after the “true transparency” it aspires to. Founded by former AOL VP of Sales Matt Prouhska, who spent the last few months as CEO of rival video ad network Smartclip, Open Book is promising improved visibility of pricing, inventory, data and technology and launches with a partnership with Lotame to help publishers target their campaigns.
Speaking of which, Gannett’s PointRoll is announcing the results of a campaign with Ford today regarding contextually relevant in-banner video ads promoting Ford’s Drive One campaign. Interaction rates for the Drive One campaign rose 74% over industry averages for expandable video ad units and nearly doubled for non-expandable video ad units. Approximately 15 out of every 100 users that expanded a panel actually started a video, according to PointRoll.
Google continued its buying spree, acquiring retail-based visual search engine Like.com that helps users search for apparel – its third acquisition during the month of August. The fashion-themed Like.com has devised algorithms that help visually match like patterns to pair outfits and accessories.
Whether it be virtual farming or racking up hits on rival gang members, over 56 million kids and adults 6 or over (or 20% of the online population) have played a social network-based game during the past 3 months, according to a new NPD Group study. Some 35% of the social network gamers are totally new to gaming according to the study, with females and older age groups more likely to be new gamers than other groups measured. Overall social network gamers are fairly evenly divided between genders, with 47% male, and 53% female.
CMT‘s new free CMT INSIDER app for the iPhone launched yesterday featuring a large library of country music content including breaking news, photo flipbooks, tour dates and artist bios. An exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Taylor Swift’s new video, “Mine” is being featured this week, which is premiering Aug. 27 on CMT, MTV and VH1.
Mobile and social developer Zattikka launched its first puzzle game for the iPad. Prism: Light The Way, which launched for the DS back in 2007 and is selling for $4.99 for the iPad and $1.99 for the iPhone, features 120 different puzzle boards and requires the player to save a team of “Glowbos” from fading into darkness.
Former MTV EVP/Digital Distribution Greg Clayman is leaving the pay TV group to join News Corp.‘s start-up out to create original content for tablets and other mobile devices. He will be working alongside Jesse Angelo, a former New York Post executive editor.
Former President of the Fox Audience Network Adam Bain has been hired by Twitter as President of Revenue, reporting to COO Dick Costolo, per TechCrunch. The micro-blogging start-up has also hired Brent Hill from Google as Head of Sales for the Midwest division, reporting to Mr. Bain.
Turner Sports’ NBA Digital has announced a number of Executive Moves:
- Former Turner Sports senior director Scott Doyne will join as the VP/Business Operations, overseeing management of NBA Digital, including NBA TV, NBA.com, NBA League Pass
- Albert “Scooter” Vertino has been promoted to VP, Content for NBA Digital
- Eric Jackson, VP/Business Operations for NBA Digital, will expand his responsibilities, joining the content group as the new Executive Director of Content Operations
Former Huff Po editor Michael Falcone is joining ABC from mid-Sept. as Deputy Political Director and author of ABC News’ early morning political tip-sheet and blog, “The Note.” Zach Wolf has also been promoted to Digital Political Editor and Deputy Political Director.
Andrea Ching has been upped to SVP/Marketing and Promotions for Turner/SI Digital. She will continue to report to Walker Jacobs, EVP of Turner/SI Digital, in Turner’s New York office.
Wrestling producer Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Entertainment has hired former Sony Pictures Consumer Products EVP Al Ovadia as Chief Marketing Officer.
Buffalo, NY-based, Synacor has hired former AOL executive Ron Bernstein as VP/Advertising Sales, charged with building out a sales staff to monetize TV Everywhere programs.
New York Public TV pioneer Richard Heffner, who helped establish WNET Channel Thirteen in New York and was its first GM from 1961 to 1963, has been the host of the longest running interview show on public TV, The Open Mind, since it first hit the public airwaves in 1956. (“I’m Richard Heffner, your host on The Open Mind,” is how he begins each show.) He has been a model of constancy and fairness, known for the respect he accords to his guests and his ability to actually listen to what they say, imagine that. Now his interviews can be enjoyed on the station’s website thirteen.org, after Dick generously bequeathed it the rights to over 50 years of the show. Over 1,000 of the 1,400 or so archived interviews are already up, searchable by guest, topic, date or title. More will be added in the coming weeks including new broadcasts – yes the show is still on the air. Look for talks with Malcolm X, Norman Mailer, Bill Moyers, Issac Asimov or Eli Wallach. The offering is part of an ongoing effort to turn the site into a digital resource for the community. It follows the launch of 4 new blogs – Girl on Film, Riff City, State Room and Bookish – and the premiere of the second season of the podcast show New York on the Clock, profiling working stiffs in the Big Apple.
