Miramax inked a deal to stream movies on the world’s largest social networking site on a rental basis. The partnership, currently live in beta, bolsters Facebook’s streaming library since the social site already has deals in place with Warner Bros., Paramount and Universal. The Miramax partnership is the largest to date and brings films like Chicago, Cold Mountain and Spy Kids to Facebook users for $3 per flick, or 30 Facebook credits. The films can be viewed online, on iPads or via Google TVs. In a blog post on its site, Miramax CEO Mike Lang wrote “Today there are over 50 million friends on Facebook that mention a Miramax film in their profile, interact with our Miramax page, or like the fan pages of beloved Miramax titles and talent ­ from Good Will Hunting to Pulp Fiction and Ben Affleck to Quentin Tarantino.”

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

MTV paired up with online writing community site Figment.com  to run a writing contest to coincide with the upcoming tenth anniversary of 9/11. The contest asks writers to “look at the world through another set of eyes” and will be judged by Grammy-nominated artist Kenna and bestselling young adult authors Maureen Johnson and Melissa de la Cruz. Entries must be submitted by August 31. The three winners will receive an iPad and the chance to be published on  MTV Act, MTV’s pro-social blog.
 
Telemundo Internacional struck a licensing pact with Netflix to stream its library shows to subscribers in Latin America. The deal calls for 1,200 hours of Telemundo’s original shows to be accessible via streaming.
 
Our appetite for online video continues to grow. In July, the total U.S. Internet audience watched a record 6.9 billion viewing sessions, comScore  reported. The research firm said 180 million U.S. Internet users watched online video in July, averaging 18.5 hours per viewer. That’s up from 178 million users watching 16.8 hours in June. ComScore also released YouTube Partner reports for the first time, indicating that top partners in July were Vevo, Warner Music, Machinima, Demand Media, Maker Studios, and Revision3.                      
 
The Live Well Network said it now reaches more than 40% of U.S. TV homes thanks to new affiliation agreements with seven stations owned by Gannett, Allbritton, Bonten and Great Plains. Live Well, operated by ABC, is a digital channel that focuses on lifestyle categories like home, food and travel.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Foursquare struck a deal with ESPN to serve up trivia, facts and news when Foursquare users check into live sporting events. Users who check in are also eligible to earn a virtual “ESPN foam finger” badge. Foursquare counts 10 million users.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Evian is adding some more juice to its successful Evian Babies campaign with a new mobile ad push. The company is running targeted banner ads within Pandora’s iPhone app phones that link to videos, a mobile app and Evian’s Facebook page, said a Mobile Marketer Daily report

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Media agency WPP Digital acquired digital shop Rockfish Interactive, whose client list includes EA sports, Sam’s Club, and Wal-Mart.
 
Skype will acquire mobile startup GroupMe, which has a technology that lets groups of people send messages across smartphone platforms. Published reports peg the purchase price at $85 million for GroupMe.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

MTV’s Jersey Shore was the most social program for the week ending August 21. The reality show scored nearly 270,000 social comments, representing a 7% share of the social TV audience, said Social Guide in its weekly report. Jersey Shore was followed by VH1’s Basketball Wives, MTV’s Teen Wolf, Fox’s Family Guy and Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants. On Sunday night August 21, social TV comments were dominated by Oxygen’s The Glee Project, HBO’s True Blood and E!’s Keeping up with the Kardashians.
 
H-P might not have been able to crack the tablet code, but the tablet market will grow just fine without the manufacturer’s contributions. The tablet market is on track to reach 250 million shipments by 2017, up from 17 million in 2010, according to a new report from In-Stat. The latest findings come on the heels of H-P’s announcement that it would pull out of the tablet and smartphone markets. The report said Apple and Android will comprise more than 90% of tablet sales in six years.
 
Facebook users aren’t messaging with friends, sending digital gifts, installing apps or joining groups as much as they were two years ago. A new report from eMarketer   finds that some social activities on the social networking site are on the downswing after years of growth. Uploading videos is rising, but most other activities are contracting. The number of Facebook users will rise by about 13% this year, down from 38% last year, eMarketer said. Of course, Facebook and Twitter remain wildly popular. ComScore reported that both sites logged record traffic in July ­ Facebook with 162 million U.S. uniques in July and Twitter with 32.8 million, both up from the months before

Online ad targeting company Resonate Networks  hired Laura Petersen as Senior Director of Sales. She’ll build up the company’s West Coast presence and has worked at companies such as Tribune Interactive and Deloitte.

Fantasy sports fans and stock market watchers may have found their chocolate-meets-peanutbutter combo. The Wall Street Journal reported that the site SportsGunner.com will launch an online game this Thursday that combines fantasy sports and stock market picking by letting use trade teams like stocks. With the direction of the market these days, this might be a better way to get your stock picking fix on.
