Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
08/21/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 21, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
We’ve all experienced envy, and those who are unemployed are especially vulnerable. Envy makes us sad and can make us lazy to the point of giving up. Nothing promises so much yet delivers so little as envy.
I know what is seemingly the perfect family, but their son wakes up every night screaming and crying. He has had night terrors for three years.
I know a wonderful young mother who has a beautiful son and lived in a lovely stone house. Until her husband came home one day and told her he was in love with another woman. She now rents a small apartment.
I have a friend who is one paycheck away from losing his house, where his kids were born and where he has strong community ties. He now owes over $50,000 more than what the house is worth.
I know a couple who just had their first child, unfortunately she was born very prematurely and spent the first six months of her life at a children’s hospital and though she is home now, she has to be constantly monitored and still needs help breathing.
I know another couple whose young son gets so angry they have to medicate him. He is five years old.
I know a man whose wife of 17 years just died in a car accident.
All these people have three things in common, they are all employed, they all live on my block and if you didn’t know them well, you would like their lives are perfect and you just might envy them.
Take stock in your life, take positive steps each day to make it better, and don’t let that horrid liar called envy stop you from doing anything.
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected].

Cynopsis: Kids PEOPLE AWARDS
Celebrating leaders & innovators in Kids TV
NominationDeadline:
October 3, 2012Awards Breakfast: December 2012
More details coming soon…
Have you heard the story about the Lincoln Memorial, and how it was getting worn down as a result of excessive cleaning?
The question was asked “Why are we cleaning it so much?”
The answer “Bird poop.”
Then the question “Why are the birds so keen on pooping on Abe?”
The answer -“Insects…they’re feeding on the insects.”
Then the question “What is it about the memorial that attracts all these insects?”
Answer “Lights. The lights that illuminate the memorial are attracting insects, which attract the birds which then poop on Abe, which means we have to clean him, which is wearing him away at an alarming rate.”
The solution leave the lights off for an hour longer in the evening. Result – 90% less poop, and so 90% less cleaning and 90% less wear and tear on the big guy.
Apologies if you’re already familiar with that story, but it’s included it for a good reason. It’s a perfect example of a solution found through the simple process of asking ‘why’ until you get to the root of the problem, and can then sort out a solution.
Let’s have a look at how you might be able to apply this to yourself:
You applied for an internal promotion to a role for which you feel you’re ideally suited, but the job went to someone else.
Why?
Because your interview didn’t go well.
Why did it go badly?
Because you went into it without much preparation, since you thought it was obvious you should get the post.
Why were you so full of (misplaced) confidence?
Because you knew the job was well within your capabilities, and was clear to you that you were ready to take the next step in your career path.
Why wasn’t that clear to the interviewers?
Because you failed to communicate it clearly enough.
So… do you tell everyone that you were cheated out of your perfect job? Do you work on being less confident? Do you revise your career path (along with the hopes, dreams, goals and ambitions that come along with it)?
Or do you work on your communication skills, in order that the next opportunity doesn’t slip through your fingers due to a failure to get over your drive, enthusiasm, qualifications and suitability?
It doesn’t matter how many times you ask yourself ‘why?’ when things get tough or confusing. It will always get you deeper into the roots of a problem, and will almost always clarify an issue and suggest a possible solution.
Steve Thomson is a trainer and coach/mentor with a particular interest in the field of communication. Working with many high profile individuals within sport, media and industry, he is widely regarded as an innovator in presentation and communication skills. Steve is Project Director of London based Profile Training with clients worldwide.
One of my colleagues keeps forwarding me unwanted “funny” emails. What is the best way to ask him to stop without hurting our working relationship?
Have you tried Ctrl D? Honestly, if you don’t want confrontation, just delete the offending items as soon as they hit your inbox. If he or she asks you if you liked the email, just be honest and say that you’re sorry, but you don’t have time to mess with stuff like that, so you haven’t looked at it. If the colleague works at another organisation, you could tell him or her that your company has a spam filter that blocks such things and they should be careful because you’ve heard that if too many spam emails come from one source that email address might be blacklisted.
Steve Thomson is a trainer and coach/mentor with a particular interest in the field of communication. Based in London, he works with clients worldwide.
