NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Vevo CEO Rio Caraeff denied it on his Twitter account, but the word from VideoInk.com is that Guggenheim Digital Media has bought a big stake of online music video programmer Vevo.  Guggenheim, of course, was a potential purchaser of Hulu before that was taken off the market. Vevo had about 47.5 million unique visitors in June.

ADVERTISING

Microsoft has had a tough time unloading its Surface tablets since it launched last October and had to take a $900 million writeoff last month to take care of some excess Surface inventory. It has lowered its prices and now Ad Age reports that the company has moved its digital marketing for Surface and the Windows operating to Publicis Groupe’s Razorfish, which already took care of Microsoft’s Xbox and Bing. According to Kantar Media, Microsoft spent $84 million in the U.S. last year advertising the Surface. 

Exclusive: Unruly Media has released a Super Bowl Playbook to help guide brands as they think about their creative for the 2014 game. Predicting that Instagram Video and Vine will be used by brands to “steal the show” just as Oreo did last year with its famed blackout-related tweet, Unruly encourages brands to focus more on the shareability of their content by releasing teaser videos and focusing more on the emotion of the content. “The top handful of ads from 2013’s Big Game earned 93% of the total shares, leaving the vast majority of advertisers to compete for the scraps – the remaining 7%,” Ian Forrester, Insight Director at Unruly, which has been studying the science of sharing since 2006, told Cynopsis exclusively. “The average share rate (shares as a % of views) for Super Bowl ads was just under 5% this past year.” Auto brands had the most shareable ads in 2011 and 2012 – not because of the vehicles themselves, but because of how they were promoted. “In 2011, VW’s The Force became not only the biggest ad of the Super Bowl, but also of all time. The reason is that it strongly evokes hilarity, warmth and nostalgia among its audience. Its Star Wars focus was also a winning stroke, prompting millions to share it with like-minded Star Wars fanatics.” A lot for SB advertisers to chew on before February 2nd.

CONTENT MEDIA

Netflix may be bolstering its brand in the United States with all of its original programming, but it hasn’t cracked the code internationally. According to Bloomberg, it hasn’t yet turned a profit from its international operations. And the word is that Britain’s largest retailer, Tesco, is going to make it even harder for Netflix to break into the black. Tesco is upping its investment into its own digital download service, Blinkbox, and is planning to add in music and e-books soon. And why not? TechNavio predicts that the digital download market will be worth $20 billion by 2018.
In Other Words: Netflix may be one of the heavyweights in the States, but it has a long way to go globally.

Is Apple ready to finally release an actual Apple TV? There are rumors going around that Apple may announce this November the planned launch of such a thing next year, according to Forbes. The 55- and 60-inch sets will feature some type of “interaction” system, the site reports. Apple is said to have been meeting with such component suppliers as Corning, Innolux, and G-Tech, among others.
In Other Words: Apple’s recent purchase of Matcha could come in handy if such a set is about to launch.

iStreamPlanet and LiveU have teamed up to offer online broadcasters a mobile, live video streaming solution. It will allow content to be transmitted and processed for delivery to multiple devices in seconds. The companies offer up the example of a sports team using it to broadcast real-time practices, behind-the-scenes interviews, and press conferences. “Any organization with live programming can benefit from the combination LiveU uplink and iStreamPlanet streamlined processing, including entertainment publications, music, and enterprise use,” Ken Zamkow, LiveU’s Head of Marketing for the US and Americas tells Cynopsis.

MOBILE ADVERTISING

Mobile marketers are becoming more reliant on in-app messaging than push notifications, MobileMarketer.com reports. Consumers also find it easier to avoid push notifications, while in-app messages are unavoidable and seen when a consumer is actively engaged with an app by his or her choosing.
In Other Words: Watch for advertising to continue to grow inside any environment that consumers self-select themselves into, whether it’s video games or information apps.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

NBC’s outrageous new game/reality show The Million Dollar Quiz kicks off on September 9 and features Ryan Seacrest overseeing a bunch of competitors in a 12-day quiz battle against one another and exhaustion. Before it kicks off, though, NBC is releasing the show’s app that will allow viewers to play along with contestants during each night’s broadcast and perhaps get a chance to go to New York and compete alongside them physically.

Google’s new Chromecast doesn’t have a way to stream a visitor’s own locally stored video onto television sets, so, of course, a developer has jumped in to create an app that does. Developer Koushik Dutta has posted an app in beta called AirCast that allows consumers to stream videos on their computers and in their Dropboxes through Chromecast until Google finds a way to block the app.

New York production company Starlight Runner Entertainment and videogame publisher Ubisoft have partnered in time for today’s debut of the videogame Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist. Starlight will help find more platform extensions and products for the Tom Clancy game series that launched in 2002 and has sold more than 26 million games globally as well as for the game’s protagonist, Sam Fisher.

The Barnes & Noble Nook may seem like an antiquated name in light of the company’s financial troubles and its decision to not make the devices in-house anymore, but B&N is sticking with the brand and has expanded its Nook Video offerings, now allowing other devices to download video content from B&N either for rental or sale. The app, optimized for iOS, Android, and Roku, gives consumers access to a boatload of content even without a subscription.

Audience Entertainment has promoted Adam Cassels to Chief Marketing Officer from Vice President, Events. Some successful new media campaigns under Cassel have been the Volkswagen R Series launch in China, Sony’s Xperia Cinema Game of Summer 2012, and the Samsung Galaxy SIII campaign for movie-theater audiences in America.
