Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/19/08
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 19, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The NBA is in negotiations to offer live streaming of local market games in time for the 2008-09 season, according to Sports Business Journal. Each team will get to choose how to manage video streaming, interactive TV and VOD telecasts of their games within their local markets by using geo-targeted blocking technology to prohibit out-of-market streaming. ITV applications are expected to include real-time scores and statistics, polling and multiple camera angles. VOD services will include replayed games and highlights packages. Getting all the various cable and satellite regional sports network rights holders to sign off on the plan will be quite a challenge. But it may be more plausible now given what the industry has learned about broadband coverage of events being additive rather than cannibalistic.
News divisions continue to adjust their social networking strategies as they chase young politicos down on their favorite online hangouts. ABC News removed its U.S. Politics Facebook app and is preparing to launch a new project in the coming weeks while CNN and MSNBC are overhauling their presence on Facebook, notes B&C. Fox News is also preparing to update its Facebook page instead of turning to its sister site MySpace, reports The NYTimes. (Facebook users are “a little older and a little more sophisticated,” a Fox News executive is quoted as saying.) The new Fox News app will feature a video player allowing users to create shareable playlists and post their own videos.
PBS detailed NewsHour‘s online coverage for the Democratic and Republican Conventions:
- Ray Suarez will anchor mid-day news summaries and pose viewers questions in video interviews with key leaders
- Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill will file daily preview and summary video reports
- Daily audio and video slideshows will highlight key moments and events
- Twitter and Flickr accounts will contain live quotes, reactions and behind the scenes coverage
Gospel Music Channel launched a new minisite to honor Gospel Music Heritage Month coming in September, featuring web-exclusive performances, interviews and local event calendars.
Bravo’s Flipping Out has some well-heeled fans. During the show’s recent reunion special Jeff Lewis mentioned he wanted to auction off the portrait he commissioned of his housekeeper Zoila. Well here it is up on Bravo’s auction site (powered by seenon.com.) Bids are up to $8,550! (Net proceed go to Zoila herself.)
Could the popular social music site Pandora‘s days be numbered? The Copyright Royalty Board’s dramatic increase in web royalty rates (from 8/100 of cent per track/per listener to 19/100 cent per track/per listener by 2010) will drive up Pandora’s expenses to the tune of $17 million this year, according to an interview with Pandora founder Tim Westergren in The Washington Post.
Social media start-up KickApps struck a new partnership with CDN Akamai to integrate the KickApps video player with the Akamai’s Stream OS video management system creating an out-of-the-box video solution for web publishers. KickApps’ drag-and-drop interface allows publishers to create, manage and program an unlimited number of custom online video players with a range of social media features. Akamai’s management system automates syndication and back end functions.
Senator Obama is attracting attention for his campaign’s new mobile site powered by iLoop. (Another way to reach it is by texting 62262.) The site is designed to increase awareness of Obama’s position on key issues and engage potential voters with video of Obama speeches, wallpapers, ringtones, etc. Opt in to receive SMS alerts for when something new is added. A viral “Tell-A-Friend” component is built into every page to encourage supporters to “share the hope.” Note: a reader wrote in to remind us that Barack Obama now has over 1.34 million supporters on Facebook (compared to 205,136 for Senator McCain.)
Gaming giant Electronic Arts withdrew its $2 billion offer to acquire Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive five months after it first announced its hostile takeover bid. EA claimed the economics of the deal no longer made sense this close to the holiday season. But the company claims it will continue to pursue private merger talks with the company.
The FCC announced plans to step up efforts to personally educate consumers on the Feb. 17 digital transition. The agency is launching a multi-city tour focusing on markets in which more than 100,000 households (or at least 15% of the households) rely solely on over-the-air signals for television. At least one commissioner will be there to attend town meetings, workshops and roundtables to get out the word and address concerns, beginning with an event scheduled in Anchorage, Alaska on Aug. 27.

To promote the release of season 2 of Dexter on DVD today Showtime launched a series of Rorschach-style inkblot tests to allow users to test whether or not they have the propensity to kill someone.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
The web still trails TV as American’s main source of news with 57% of Americans watching TV news on a given day compared to 29% for online, according to the latest Pew Research Center news survey. Pew breaks news consumers into 4 categories:
- Traditionalist (46%) rely heavily on TV news at all parts of the day and tend to be older, less educated and less affluent
- More affluent Integrators (23%) use TV as their main news source but supplement it daily with online content, show greater interest in politics and sports than other segments
- Net-Newsers (13%) voraciously consume blogs and online video. They’re affluent, well-educated, 58% male and display a strong interest in technology
- Disengaged (14%) consumers expressed a general lack of interest in news. About 61% of this group was female and 69% completed high school or less
Other key findings from the survey include:
- In spite of the increasing variety of ways to get the news, the proportion of young people getting no news on a typical day has increased substantially over the past decade – (34%) under 25 yrs. say they get no news on a typical day, up from 25% in 1998
- 51% of Americans now say they check in on the news from time to time during the day, rather than get the news at regular times
- Social networking sites are very popular with young people (65% of 18-24 year olds have a profile), but just 10% of users say they regularly get news from these sites
- For the first time in 15 years fewer than half (46%) of Americans say the read a daily newspaper on a regular basis
Glam Media appointed former CEO of DoubleClick Japan Yukihiro Yamamura as CEO of Glam Japan based in Tokyo, the company’s latest international office. Yamamura-san’s most recent post was as CEO of Excite Japan, operator of popular women’s web portal Excite Women Japan. Glam hopes to launch a Japanese site by the end of the year.
Gregg S. Zegras has joined LifeMed Media company dLife as COO of its integrated media network, leading growth in the area of diabetes educational media and consumer product development. Greg most recently worked at NBC’s iVillage Properties, where he served as SVP/General Manager of the Digital Health businesses.
Indie web studio Generate launches its latest scripted show today, Republicrats, available over the next 11 weeks exclusively on MSN. The brainchild of comedian Sean Masterson (creator of Generate’s Home Purchasing Club,) the satire pokes fun at both politics and the UGC-fad of allowing audiences to make your decisions for you. Via integrations to Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and Windows Live Spaces viewers will be able to do anything from pitch themselves as Sean’s possible running mate to help him choose a perspective first lady. “You tell me – I’ll do whatever you want me to do,” he promises in the trailer. “Because I’m a people pleaser and you’re the people.” (He has a bit of Don Draper in him, doesn’t he?) For more satirical fun on achieving allusive internet fame check out Peter Blomquist and Jeff Wiens’ new Get Hit series, IFC’s 7th original web series. Takeaway tip from episode 2: “Make sure your budget is somewhere between $0 and $100 dollars.”
