NBC News has acquired Stringwire, a live-video service that combines live streaming with social media. During Hurricane Sandy, the service generated striking eyewitness footage of the storm and its aftermath. “For breaking news and stories that have a real-time visual component, Stringwire’s services provide the ability to recruit and direct contributors based on geographical location through Twitter, and to instantly access live footage,” said NBC in a statement. Aside from founder Phil Gorman‘s use of Stringwire during Sandy and the Kenyan elections, “NBC News will be the first media organization to use the technology for live event coverage,” said NBC. Groman is onboard as product lead.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Porter Ridge makes its debut on Discovery tonight. Set in rural Indiana, the reality series was created by the same folks at Gurney Productions who made breakout stars of the bearded Duck Dynasty crew. The cast of real-life characters includes Jeff the Bear Man, Elvis Larry and Dirty Andy. What can we expect? Exec producer Scott Gurney tells Cynopsis, “Imagine a town with no stop lights, no laws, where friendship is everything. And your neighbor lives with half a dozen grizzly bears.” Meet the gang tonight at 10:30p.

Charlotte Church didn’t mince words when she revealed on Twitter that she’d turned down a chance to be on the judges’ panel for a U.K. singing competition. “I got asked to do the X Factor job,” the Welsh singer tweeted on August 8. “I’d rather poke my eyes out with sticks that be a part of a machine that kills music.” She followed up with an explanation to newspaper Wales on Sunday, “If it was a show that was actually about music talent, creativity and songwriting in any way shape or form then I’d love to be part of that. But as that doesn’t seem to be available, nobody wants to make that sort of show, then no.” An X Factor source claimed Church hasn’t been high on the list of judging candidates; chances are the brouhaha won’t hurt sales for Church’s album, Three, set for an August 19 release.

Lisa Oz – radio host, best-selling author and wife of Dr. Mehmet Oz  is set to host a primetime health and wellness talker on Veria Living Network next month. But viewers can get a sneak peek tonight at 9p. “The show taps into Lisa’s passion,” Elizabeth Jane Browde, senior vp of programming at Veria Living, tells Cynopsis. “This is a subject matter that is so a part of who she is and that is going to pop off the screen.” Mrs. Oz’s show formally bows on Monday, September 16 at 8p.

There might not be a happy ending, but at least fans will find out what would have happened had Showtime not shut down The Borgias after three seasons. The net announced that creator Neil Jordan‘s script for a two-hour finale for the Jeremy Irons-led series, originally planned for four seasons, has been turned into an e-book, available this week from major e-tailers.

Numerous nets are going orange for Hunger Awareness Month in September. Networks from A+E to The Weather Channel are participating in a campaign to educate viewers about childhood hunger in the U.S. (nearly 16 million children live in households without the resources for nutritious food). From Go Orange public service announcements to social media outlets to, in some cases, turning their logos orange on September 8, much of TV will be pulling out the stops for the drive. “I view supporting anti-hunger organizations, like our partners at Share Our Strength, who tirelessly work toward one day realizing No Kid Hungry here in our country, as a privilege for our Food Network & Cooking Channel brands,” Brooke Johnson, FN&CC president, tells Cynopsis.

Let there be music: Bleeding Fingers Custom Music Shop, a joint venture between Extreme Music and composer Hans Zimmer and Steve Kafsky, will create show-specific music libraries for TV productions. “We’re not scoring to picture, but we’re creating tones for the characters and cues for different areas – heartbreak, disappointment,” Extreme Music CEO Russell Emmanual told Billboard. “We create a number of tracks specifically for that show… giving the music director a tool box to self-score the show.”

College football fans could miss key kick-offs if the Pac-12 Networks and DirecTV don’t strike a deal soon. With talks fumbling and the season looming, Pac-12 has gone on the offense with a print, digital, radio, TV and billboard campaign that urges DirecTV customers to switch to a different outlet. “We realize this is affecting many of our fans and we share their frustration,” said Pac-12 net pres Lydia-Murphy-Stephans. “We built the Pac-12 Networks to give fans unprecedented access to their favorite teams and sports on TV, and with just two weeks before the fall sports schedule begins DirecTV continues to deny them that access.” In a statement, DirecTV said, “Pac 12 either needs to agree to a price to make it affordable for all of our customers, as we’ve offered and done with dozens of other sports networks, or allow Pac 12 fans to buy the network separately or purchase individual games on demand.”

Speaking of… as the CBS/Time Warner Cable standoff over carriage contracts drags on (CBS went dark for about three million TWC customers on August 2), the cable company is issuing credits for Showtime and The Movie Channel subscribers, but is still refusing credit for CBS. It is part of the basic programming package, and the “pieces of that package change from time to time – sometimes we add channels, sometimes we drop them,” a TWC rep has said.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS has made a deal for sitcom Gorgeous Morons, from writer-producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. The project, about drop-dead gorgeous but dumb-as-dirt brothers, is with ABC Studios. Said EVP Patrick Moran of the comedy going to an outside network, “Not everything is going to work out at the studio’s sister network and therefore we want ABCS to afford our show creators enough options to find the right home for their material.”

Not that ABC is out of the game. The net has signed a deal with ABC Studios for a comedy series from Casey Wilson (Happy Endings) and June Diane Raphael (ABC pilot Pulling). “We are so happy that Casey and June chose us as their home,” said ABCS head of comedy Amy Hartwick. “We think they are a perfect addition to the comedy roster that we have been building over the past couple of years.”

Fox has a put pilot commitment for live-action comedy The Henchman. Written by Dan Kopelman (Rules of Engagement), the show focuses on a super-villain’s henchman dealing with single parenthood and middle age.

Prison drama Paradise has gone to NBC with a put pilot commitment. From writer Seth Grahame-Smith and producer Greg Berlanti, the show takes place in late-21st-century Las Vegas, where an innocent man fights to escape the world’s largest maximum-security prison.

The Weinstein Group secured the rights to nonfiction bestseller The Hour of Peril, looking to turn it into a mini-series. Brendan Deneed and Charles Spicer will exec produce.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

The Office alum Angela Kinsey will play a snooty teacher unimpressed by adorable Jess on New Girl. Season three of the FOX sitcom premieres Tuesday, September 17 at 9p.

Allie Gonino (The Lying Game) has been cast in Sundance Channel‘s six-ep drama, The Red Road.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

Ahead of its season eleven premiere this fall, Top Chef is airing a digital “pre-premiere” starting Wednesday, August 14 on BravoTV.com. Sponsored by Cigna, “Padma’s Picks” scours the Big Easy for super chefs, then has the ten best battle it out for the chance to appear on the show. Top Chef comes back Wednesday, October 2 at 10p.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Late night French hit Anything Goes is getting the international treatment. Shine Group has licensed the shows to 11 territories, most recently Spain, Brazil, Ukraine and Romania. The show features comedians and actors doing wild stunts.

With 100,000 signatures behind it, a petition against Russia’s anti-piracy law, which went into effect August 1, may prompt an amendment. Intended to prevent the illegal distribution of online material, critics contend the law could block legitimate web sites, and doesn’t adequately protect users’ rights. The law will now be analyzed by an expert group, which will present possible changes.

~ EMMY Q&A ~

The History Channel‘s four-part documentary about titans of industry, The Men Who Built America, earned four Emmy nods (Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Series, as well as Writing, Cinematography and Sound Editing for Non-Fiction programming). First broadcast last fall, it was a labor of love for producer Stephen David, who has long been fascinated by the likes of J.P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller.

What was your biggest challenge with the project?
The question we were always asking ourselves was: How do you bring history to life in a new way? For The Men Who Built America, we knew the major hurdle was to humanize these real people for audiences, to come at it through the characters, and so we applied a lot of scripted elements to the story, in trying to understand a character’s motivations, personality and faults. Because of the attention to character, we were able to bring this period to life in new ways.

What was the moment you realized you’d made something special?
I remember sitting in the edit bay and watching the scene of the Johnstown Flood – which is one of the worst man-made disasters in all of American history – and seeing the way in which the whole thing came together with massive VFX, scripted scenes, archive, talking heads and an amazing score. I remember feeling tense, excited and just fully enthralled. It didn’t feel like anything I had seen before.

Any special recipes for dealing with stress?
There was a tremendous amount of cheese dogs eaten during this production.
