Cynopsis: Sports
08.13.13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 13, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With the launch of Premier League coverage on Saturday, NBC Sports Network will utilize the new programming to officially start transitioning the name of the network to NBCSN. As part of the rebranding, the channel will increasingly be referred to by commentators and on-screen graphics as NBCSN leading up to the 2014 Sochi Olympics in February. This weekend, the network’s hallmark will show and say NBC Sports Network, followed by a dissolve to the NBCSN logo with a NBCSN voiceover. In time, the hallmark will only include the NBCSN portion
“The high-profile nature of our Premier League launch is the perfect platform to increase our campaign of branding NBC Sports Network as NBCSN. This is a natural evolution from the longer channel name to the acronym, as NBCSN is streamlined visually and a faster read,” said John Miller, CMO, NBC Sports Group. “Premier League coverage will feature NBCSN as its primary mark. By the Winter Olympics in February, the transformation will be complete, and the Games will be used to solidify NBCSN as the network’s name and brand.”
On to the PGA Championship, both CBS Sports and Turner Sports report spikes in ratings over year ago numbers when programming faced the Olympics. CBS Sports’ weekend coverage of the 2013 PGA Championship on Saturday and Sunday saw a ratings hike of 19%, earning a two-day average overnight household rating/share in the metered markets of 3.7/9, according to Nielsen. That was also up 6% from 2011’s 3.5/8. Final-round coverage earned an overnight household rating/share of 4.4/10, up 13% from last year’s 3.9/8; and up 2% from 4.3/9 in 2011.
On TNT, the 2013 PGA Championship averaged a 1.2 U.S. HH rating and 1.6 million total viewers to register its highest-rated and most-viewed coverage of the event since 2010. Viewership hit 1.6 million for an increase of 54% compared with last year’s average of 1,038,000 viewers. Sunday’s telecast averaged 1,616,000 total viewers, up 28% compared to 2012 with an average 1.2 household rating is up 20% over a 1.0 rating in 2012.
In our (seemingly) daily FOX Sports 1 update, the company announced its talent lineup for FOX Football Daily as well as FOX NFL Kickoff, a one-hour Sunday morning pregame program on the channel. Executives officially revealed that its roster of experts will include former players Ronde Barber, Scott Fujita, Randy Moss and Brian Urlacher. FOX Football Daily will be hosted by Curt Menefee and feature Jay Glazer, rules analyst Mike Pereira with Joel Klatt offering college football expertise starting Aug. 19 at 6p. Other stars making appearances on the shows include members of the FOX NFL Sunday team.
FS1’s bow on Sunday will include six hours of Ultimate Fighting Championship programming including the UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen in prime time. The three-hour main card also features five additional bouts. Prelims kick off at 6p on the channel, with four fights including a bantamweight showdown between Brad Pickett and Michael McDonald. Coverage begins at 4:30p with UFC Ultimate Insider.
ESPN will officially launch the college basketball season with the College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon featuring more than 24 hours of consecutive basketball coverage on Monday, Nov. 11 and Tuesday, Nov. 12. The slate includes 16 men’s matchups across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU, and wrapping up with the third installment of the State Farm Champions Classic, pitting Michigan State/Kentucky and Kansas/Duke. ESPN2 will carry nine straight games tipping off every two hours beginning at 7p with a women’s game between Stanford/Connecticut while ESPNU hosts a men’s doubleheader also at 7p pitting Kent State/Temple.
The Southeastern Conference announced the league’s bowl lineup starting in 2014, with nine games set for post-season play starting in 2014 plus its guaranteed slot in the College Football playoff. New games include the Belk Bowl and Texas Bowl to its roster. The Capital One Bowl will get first pick of SEC teams available after those qualifying for the College Football Playoff. Other games will include the Outback Bowl, Music City Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Gator Bowl, the Advocare V100 Bowl and the Birmingham Bowl.
The IOC signed off on a deal with Japan-based advertising agency Dentsu for broadcast rights in China and 16 other Asian countries for the 2014 Sochi Winter Games and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Games, according to the AP. Dentsu will now hunt for broadcast partners for the games.

Back to FOX, FOX Sports 1 laid out early sponsors for the channel’s launch this weekend. Brands are set to include Ford Motor Company, GEICO, and Yum! Brands. In addition, the company reports that Samsung Mobile and several movie companies are also onboard with “significant” investments in FOX Sports 1 and other FOX Sports outlets. In addition to traditional video and digital advertising, Ford will continue to serve as the exclusive automotive sponsor of the FOX NFL Sunday Pregame Show as well as the Ford FOX College Football Pregame Show. Ford’s messaging is also set to run on live sports, studio shows, news programming and documentaries on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2. New elements include pregame entitlement in FOX Sports 1’s Big East college basketball coverage this fall, the expansion of Ford’s commitment to national high school football and a significant on-air presence in FOX Sports 1 Super Bowl week programming.
Pac-12 Networks launched a campaign targeting DIRECTV, which has not locked in a deal with the outlets. The campaign, dubbed “Compare,” looks to compare Pac-12 football action a fan will see on Pac-12 Networks with what they won’t see on DirecTV. The campaign is being pushed to digital, print, outdoor and radio outlets as well as across all Pac-12 member university platforms. The campaign includes a series of university-specific 30-second TV and digital spots as well as print and outdoor executions to “rally Pac-12 fans and be upfront with DirecTV subscribers” noting that their audiences will miss 750 live Pac-12 sporting events including 35 football games and nearly half of all league games.
Collegiate Licensing Company, an affiliate of IMG College, revealed its annual list of top-selling institutions and manufacturers for royalties spanning July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013 on all collegiate merchandise sold on behalf of CLC-represented institutions.
