Cyn opsis: DIGITAL

08/12/08

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 12, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Just a month after launching, the iPhone Store has delivered more than 60 million apps, Steve Jobs told the WSJ. While most were free, Apple is bringing in an average of $1 million a day for the fee-based apps which range from $1-$10. The company is on track to make $360 million/year in revenue from the brand new division even though the company keeps just 30% of the sales, (with the remaining 70% going to the developer.) Sega’s Super Monkey Ball game remains the top moneymaker, selling 300,000 copies during the store’s first 20 days in existence at $9.99 a pop.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

NBC continues to break records with its exhaustive digital coverage of the Olympics. NBCOlympics.com delivered 1 million + streams of Sunday night’s 4 x 100 swimming relay, making it the most watched video ever from the site. NBCOlympics.com’s total video streams to date are 11.1 million, five times more than the total for the entire Athens Games (2.2 million).

This one’s a no brainer. Comcast’s G4 network is making its X-Play Weekly video game review show available for download at the Xbox Live Video store beginning Thursday. G4’s Code Monkeys, The Block and Attack of the Show are also available on the platform.

IFC
struck an exclusive partnership with Pitchfork.tv to feature its catalog of its live performances, interviews, documentary segments and music videos. IFC will air and feature on its website 10 uncut interstitial shows each week from select episodes of Pitchfork.tv series such as Juan’s Basement, Daytripping, In the Studio and Don’t Look Down.

TVN added to its library of VOD titles signing a new multiyear output deal with Starz’ Overture Films. Titles include The Visitor, Traitor with Don Cheadle, and the upcoming Righteous Kill reuniting Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

Less than two weeks after getting booted off the Dish Network platform GolTV secured coverage on Time Warner Cable in New York City and Los Angeles.

For its first foray into made for the web programming Fox International Channels acquired The Cell produced by UK-based Endemol, according to THR. Scheduled for distribution across its network of sites in October, the 20-part mystery begins with an amnesia victim who awakes in a jail cell with no clue of how he got there. The Cell already appeared on Sony’s Crackle.com in the U.S.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Picking up on the Flickr craze web-based photo sharing service Shutterfly is expanding its social networking capabilities. Shutter Fly Share Sites allow users to set up their own URLs and provide tools to enhance their ability to tell stories with their pictures. Calendars, weather information, polls and events can be added to the shareable multimedia photo books.

Digital distribution specialist New Video Digital announced it has acquired the rights to more than 5,000 hours of indie content from over 85 different content owners. New Video acts as a middleman for filmmakers, working with distributors like Apple to help producers maximize sales by improving their placement on the iTunes portal.

Revision3
is launching an incubator project to help discover and develop budding web talent, per TV Week. Revision3 Beta will launch with about a half-dozen host-driven nonfiction shows including one centering around money and finance.

Let’s face it the web is arguably the best platform ever invented for incubating unknown talent. Actors are getting a chance to strut their stuff at an increasingly young age. How young? Check out this Kids Version of The Dark Knight.

For an audio tour of the rock and roll landmarks in the Big Apple download citylisten.com‘s latest MP3 release. It includes a personal playlist of relevant New York songs compiled by Manhattan DJ Ken Dashow.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Tired of rival fantasy football players beating you to the punch at the waiver wire? Yahoo unveiled a mobile version of its fantasy football portal offering the ability to set your line-ups, receive injury updates and make last-minute roster changes. Yahoo’s PC-based Fantasy Football app also added some new goodies including a new draft application featuring a drag-and-drop queue and audio alerts. Yahoo also introduced an interactive Fantasy Football app for AT&T U-verse platform this year, allowing viewers to receive customized updates on their players via the U-bar panel.

Amazon‘s wireless Kindle device has increased its catalog to over 145,000 books, magazines and newspapers available for immediate download. The company remains tight-lipped about sales of the device, but a new analyst report from Citigroup doubles its original estimates of units it expects Amazon to sell this year from 190,000 to 380,000, per Reuters. Will it be a must have gift this coming holiday season?

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The Allman Brothers filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group subsidiary UMG Recordings seeking royalties from CD sales, ringtones and iTunes digital downloads, reported Reuters. The band maintains that UMG paid only a fraction of the royalties it is owned from sales of pre-1980 classics including Ramblin’ Man, Midnight Rider and Jessica.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Broadband internet subscriber growth fell to its lowest level in 7 years according to Leichtman Research Group. The top 20 MSOs and telco providers added just 887,000 net high-speed subscribers during the quarter ending June 30, half of their growth rate in Q2 of 2007. Top cable companies added some 670,000 new subs, representing 76% of the growth.

NBC Olympics.com and Yahoo.com are proving to be the go-to places to view Olympics content online so far, according to a new custom Netview report from Nielsen Online. On the video side, NBCOlympics.com saw a steady increase of visitors to its video portal, increasing from just 36,000 on Aug. 7 to 436,000 on the 8th then 858,000 on Aug. 9.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Are you a rocker or a blogger? Now indie music bloggers can answer, “I’m a Mogger.” Popular music blog/discovery site Mog.com operates a network of blogs that feature limited free streaming music. Via a deal with RealNetworks’ Rhapsody service, users are permitted to stream 25 entire songs each month or listen to an unlimited number of short sample clips. Today Mog is opening up its platform to integrate posts from bloggers large and small, in exchange for exposure and a share of the brand advertising revenue generated by the site. Mog, whose investors include Sony BMG and Universal Music Group, attracts some 1.8 million monthly uniques. Its Adify-powered system is open to truly long tail content, says founder and CEO David Hyman, meaning there are no monthly traffic minimums to fulfill for a blogger to qualify for the platform. Dedicated music writers have already been turning to Mog for fringe benefits such as access to musicians or shows. Now they have a financial incentive to contribute to the site, particularly if new VP of Sales Alex Brough (a former bigwig at MTV) can bring in deep pocketed sponsors.
