Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
08.10.10
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, August 10, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Questions to ask during an interview
During most interviews, you will be given an opportunity to ask questions. This is the time for you to shine and place yourself above the competition, if you ask meaningful, intelligent questions. Understand, this is not an exercise in civility, this is another question in disguise, and is not the time to say no or to be unprepared. You are being judged on the questions you ask.
First some ground rules, as written last week, don’t ask questions about how the employer can benefit you. Don’t ask questions that the company’s website obviously answers, not only haven’t you done your homework, you also haven’t even looked at the website!
Do, however, have your questions prepared and well researched. Establish your general knowledge of the company by asking the interviewer for the “insiders opinion” about the company’s culture, the competition and the industry. Using current industry terminology can be an indication of an easy transition to the job.
The following sample questions are broken down into three categories, the position, the company, and the industry. Anytime you can preface your question with company knowledge, do so.
- The Position
- What are the skills and attributes that have proven most helpful to the company for someone in this position?
- What are the most immediate challenges that need to be addressed by the person who gets the job?
- What would you expect to see accomplished by this position in the first year?
- What are the next steps in the interview process?
- The Company
- What is the best part about working here?
- What are the three most valued assets of this company? (Understanding what the company values most allows an employee to concentrate on those areas, to be in sync with what management wants.)
- What are the biggest challenges the company currently faces?
- What are the company’s strength and weaknesses compared to the competition?
- How do you see the company evolving in the next five years?
- The Industry
- How is the current economy effecting the industry?
- What new skill sets do you think the industry will value in the next five years?
- What new trends do you see in the industry and how will that effect this company?
These questions are just a sampling, and can obviously be tailored to particular situations. Remember: there are three things you want to demonstrate when given the opportunity to ask questions – your desire to help the company, your knowledge of the company and your willingness to learn new things.
Next week: The Final Impression
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
Disrupting the Ordinary: Creating Yourself as a New Thought Leader
by Michael Pollock
I can’ t stress enough the importance of downtime. And this is the time of year when you can practice taking some and remember how good it is. Turn off your internet (but not until after you’ ve read this article). Put away your smartphone. Tell people you have gone away and can’ t be reached. Go away and be unreachable. Read a novel. Catch a fish. Build a wall.
Cut the grass. Go to a concert. Invite your friends for a BBQ. And do these things whole heartedly. Don’ t be checking in. Don’ t be planning next week’ s to-do list.
And here is an interesting idea I got from a commencement address given by David Foster Wallace shortly before his death don’ t be the center of your own universe. Or at least consider the universe that you inhabit whether it’ s your family or your job or your town and look at it afresh and consider your position in it and where it fits with everything else and what everyone else in it is doing and feeling and what the opportunities are and what your dreams are and close your eyes and let them fly.
DFW tells the following story: “There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys, how’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?”
So go think about your water. What is your water? And where can it take you. Go read the inside of your eyelids and see what they tell you.
It is summer. Give yourself a break. All the stuff you have been thinking about and fretting about and staying awake about will still be in there, but it will be sorting itself out in your unconscious. It will be making connections you couldn’ t make if you were trying. Let it simmer and percolate.
Put on the calendar the days you will be taking off and go camping. Or hiking. Go on, challenge yourself. There is nothing like some serious walking to keep you concentrated, focused. You think about your feet and your water bottle. You think about your food and the awesomeness of nature, or you think about how waterproof is your poncho and where you will pitch your tent. It is completely engrossing and it is a wonderful way to put the cares of the workaday world aside and sort themselves out without your conscious interference.
Give it a try.

If you have any specific questions you’d like our Experts to address, please email them to me, John Cox at [email protected].
I have been at the same job for three years. Despite getting excellent reviews, and mentioning that I wanted to in another department, my immediate supervisor has kept me here. I do a lot of his work for him. How can I get out of this particular position yet still be with the company but under someone else’s supervision that will allow me to follow an upward career path?
I suggest that you start by being clear in your own mind about which other department you are interested in. Make some discreet inquiries about the possibilities of getting in there. Being interested in what else is going on at the firm should not count against you.
When you are sure where you want to move to and feel that there is a good chance they’ll take you, tell your boss that you are very interested in making this move to advance your career; and tell him that you’d value his help in introducing you to the new supervisor.
Tell him that if it works out, you will be happy to train your successor and make sure that the transition will be a smooth one for him and all his work will still be taken care of.
What rights do I have as far as seeing the company’s file on me? Is this something that is strictly up to the company or do all employees have certain license to see their file?
In essence, the file is the company’ s property and they implement their own policies about who can see it. Except that in some states the law permits an employee to see it, nevertheless.
I refer you to the valuable site of nonprofit organization Workplace Fairness
http://www.workplacefairness.org / This will answer your question in more detail than we can here. Neither this column, nor Workplace Fairness, can offer you legal advice; so if you have difficulty in seeing your file you should consider getting professional legal counsel.
