Cynopsis: DIGITAL

08/10/10

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 10, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

In a bid to put fear of backroom deals to rest, Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg put forth a joint proposal to insure open access to wired broadband services that would prevent ISPs from discriminating or prioritizing against “lawful internet content, applications or services in a way that causes harm to users or competition.” However, critics point out that the proposal establishes two separate network categories: a “public internet” and “differentiated online services” ISPs would be allowed to charge premium prices for – precisely what preliminary reports feared. The proposal would allow ISPs to segment traffic by content category, including health care, entertainment and gaming options. Also, the principles would not apply to the wireless broadband market, which the companies said was more competitive and in more of a state of flux.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

ESPN is expanding its SportsCenter franchise by 7 hours each weekday on ESPNNEWS, with an increased emphasis on programming sourced from ESPN.com local sites. Shared content will include interactive polls; fan videos and photos; social media content from fans and athletes; and viewer Q&As with ESPN commentators. Potential SportsCenter-branded videos produced for ESPN.com each day may include extended interviews, the most memorable video of the day, most talked about stories and best highlights and star performances.

Samsung and NBC Universal Digital Studio are jointly producing an 8-episode scripted comedy FCU: Fact Checker’s Unit, to showcase the capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S smart phone. Based on a short film starring creators Peter Karinen and Brian Sacca of the same name, it depicts a pair of fact checkers who go to great lengths to confirm obscure facts about celebrities, featuring cameos of the actual stars. The web series premiers on Aug. 17 on NBC.com will be available on iTunes, major cable VOD services and mobile platforms in the U.S. It will also be distributed on the digital platforms of Syfy in the UK, Syfy Universal throughout Asia/Pacific and The Sci Fi Channel in Australia.

Gearing up for ABC’s 3-hour “CMA Music Festival” to be hosted by Tim McGraw on Sept. 1, ABC.com launched an online video series highlighting backstage interviews and behind-the-scenes moments with country music stars. Features talent includes Taylor Swift, Turner, Carrie Underwood and Josh Turner.

E! Entertainment Television founder Alan Mruvka has signed a deal with gas station located out-of-home network PumpTop TV to produce the celebrity-themed magazine show, “The Look.”

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Online video producer My Damn Channel has closed on a $4.4 million round of series B financing led by Intuitive Venture Partners, with additional funding from previous investors including Okapi Venture Capital and Sunshine Wireless Company. The company plans to use the funding to expand its sales and biz dev teams and introduce a slate of paid premium programming during Q4 of this year.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Search re-targeting specialist Magnetic has developed a solution for video ad networks, announcing a new partnership with BrightRoll to improve performance of video ads across its network. Magnetic compiles search data to help marketers target their ads to users who have conducted searches of related products. Its keyword generation system identifies relevant search terms that may not be intuitive for marketers, according to Magnetic CEO Josh Shatkin-Margolis. “One hundred percent of search marketing is precisely targeted; this technology will help display inventory go in this direction,” he said.

Social blogging platform StumbleUpon reports that its recently revamped ad network is performing well, growing by 20% since its relaunch in March with nearly 2,000 monthly customers running 3,000 campaigns daily. Ads are delivered to StumbleUpon users based on the expressed preferences of themselves and friends in their network, giving them the ability to give “thumbs up” endorsements on campaigns.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Voice Over IP provider Skype filed for an initial public offering to be underwritten by Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley. The IPO bid was made less than a year after eBay sold the company to an investment group led by private-equity firm Silver Lake Partners for close to $2 billion. The investors hope to raise up to $100 million in the offering.

NeoMedia Technologies announced an agreement to supply Buongiorno with mobile barcode capabilities to create and manage mobile barcode campaigns globally, with an initial focus on the North American and Western European markets.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Local online media services company Inergize Digital has launched a new free Seek it Local mobile app on the iTunes store to help local station sites offer a directory of local businesses to mobile users in their markets. The co-branded or white label app, which offers one ad position that can be sold locally or filled with national ads by Inergize, allows users to search for businesses by location, keyword or category. Consumers can bookmark businesses and people, save coupons, view business photos and video commercials or contact businesses directly from their phones. The app currently represents 63 television stations in 30 markets, with users’ nearest local directory automatically appearing.

Less than two weeks after unveiling the Intensity II, Samsung introduced the Flight II and Eternity II handsets for AT&T, the former available now at Radio Shack stores, the latter coming to the carrier’s stores on Aug. 15. The touchscreen/QWERTY hybrid Flight II has a slide-open clamshell design; the Eternity II comes with a full size 3″ touchscreen and works as a 3G quad-band world phone.

Hearst’s Redbook launched One Stop Shop, its first iPhone app, developed in partnership with shopping service specialist NearbyNow. The app highlights weekly fashion, beauty and home improvement picks available for online or localized in-store purchase, as well as styling tips, decorating advice, and recipe ideas.

Discovery Communications‘ Digital Media team has launched a free Animal Planet app for Android devices, its first mobile app created exclusively for the fast-growing platform. It provides program listings, video clips, quizzes and other interactive content from shows such as Whale Wars, Pit boss and River Monsters.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Tracie Wilson has been tapped as SVP/Programming & Development, Stamford Media Center, NBC Universal Domestic TV Distribution. She is the key executive in charge of the newly reconstructed production facility at the Stamford Media Center.

Media agency MEC hired Susan Schiekofer as Managing Partner, Account Director, responsible for all digital media planning and buying activities on the AT&T business. Susan will be based in New York and will report to Renee Milliaressis.

Online video publisher Metacafe named Steven Horn as VP/Programming. In this new role, overseeing production at Metacafe’s five premium entertainment studios targeting movies, video games, TV, Sports and Music. Steven previously served as VP of Editorial at Fox Interactive Media and Director of Programming and Content at VUDU.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Santa Monica-based automated online content distributor Demand Media also filed for an IPO on Friday to test the waters of the open market, hoping to raise $125 million. The company is trying to woo investors with its intriguing business model more than its profit projections (Demand posted a loss of $22.3 million on revenue of $114 million over the first half of the year) – a model that has critics divided. The company commissions articles and videos from a pool of more than 10,000 freelancers, assigning topics from a proprietary algorithm that looks at recent search terms, ad placements and competitors’ content. The content produced is then distributed to YouTube (it is one of the portal’s largest video suppliers) as well as the websites and mobile apps of its core properties, including comedy site Cracked.com, how to video site eHow and health and fitness portal LiveStrong.com. The factory approach sounds efficient if nothing else. But Demand is already widely known for paying its freelancers very little ($15-$20 per article or video clip) and you know the adage; you get what you pay for. In order to make a go of it, contributors must crank out dozens of “assignments.” And the whole practice of programming based on what’s popular now could be akin to trying to capture lightning in a bottle. Following in the footsteps of what others have made popular is a formula for mediocrity, as any studio chief worth his or her salt will tell you.
