Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04.09.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Here’s an eye-opener for you to jump-start your morning: Chase Carey, the current COO of News Corp., says the company might take Fox’s broadcast network off the air and make it available only via subscriptions if Aereo has its way in court. “We need to be fairly compensated for our content,” he said on stage at the NAB Show in Las Vegas. He added that it’s not an “ideal path” for Fox but one that might be necessary if a company like Aereo continues to “steal our signal.” In a statement released by News Corp. following Carey’s NAB session, the company said: “We simply cannot provide the type of quality sports, news, and entertainment content that we do from an ad-supported only business model. We have no choice but to develop business solutions that ensure we continue to remain in the driver’s seat of our own destiny. One option would be converting the Fox broadcast network to a pay channel.”

WIGS is beginning production on Susanna, a new drama starring Anna Paquin (True Blood) and Maggie Grace (LOST). Focusing on the issue of post-partum depression, the 12-episode drama series is written and directed by WIGS Co-Creator (and one of Cynopsis’ Most Intriguing People) Jon Avnet. It also stars Rob Benedict (Felicity) and Virginia Madsen (Sideways). It will debut on the WIGS channel later this spring.

FremantleMedia International and Vuguru are making two new original multiplatform comedies available for international buyers at MIPTV 2013.

  • Fetching, created by Amy B. Harris (The Carrie Diaries, Sex and the City), is about a young woman who dumps her fiance and law career in order to own and operate a doggie day care. The show premiered on AOL in June 2012.
  • Hollywood Help was created by Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Rachael Harris (The Hangover), and written by Julie Welch (Curb Your Enthusiasm). It’s a behind-the-scenes comedy that follows a struggling actor looking for his first big break.

The shows are available for both linear and non-linear platforms, in different versions that range from five-minute “chapters” to half-hour episodes and one 90-minute movie.

Shaftesbury has acquired Long Story, Short, a new romantic comedy web series created and written by, and starring Katie Boland (The Master). Spanning 11 five-minute episodes, the series follows a 21-year-old woman and her two best friends as they try to deal with relationships, bad dates, and other romantic kerfuffles. The series also stars Lauren Collins (Degrassi: The Next Generation) and Michael Seater (Life with Derek). Shaftesbury will offer the series, which can also be available as two half-hour episodes, to buyers at MIPCube and MIPTV 2013.

Independent production company Argonon is extending the Cash in the Attic TV brand online with the launch of CashInTheAttic.com, an online hub for people to buy and sell antiques, collectibles, and other valuables. Users will also be able to access more than 15,000 video clips from Cash in the Attic, the BBC series that has been on the air for a decade.

Fox Sports Media Group has inked a multiyear partnership with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions to air 48 live two-hour boxing events annually. Fox Sports 1, the group’s upcoming sports network, will schedule 24 live events per year, with Fox Deportes simulcasting those 24 in Spanish as well as airing an additional 24 events. All 48 events will be available for Fox Sports Go, an upcoming TV Everywhere service that will offer authenticated access to live and on-demand FS1 programming.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

The 2013 Digital Content NewFronts could bring in as much as $1 billion in ad deals across all of the participating companies, according to Ad Age. This number sounds great for the original online video programming industry, but the presence of presenters such as CBS Interactive, SpinMedia, and Zynga mean the weeklong program won’t just focus on video, but multiple types of digital content. So while $1 billion is a big, beautiful number, don’t hold your breath.

A Cynopsis Exclusive: mDialog, a provider of video ad management solutions, announced at NAB that it is partnering with Brightcove to enable dynamic video ad insertion for live, linear, and on-demand content across connected devices. Per the deal, mDialog will make it possible for media companies using Brightcove’s online video platform, Video Cloud, to insert ads into HLS- and HDS-based video streams, as well as measure them, in real time.

YuMe has updated the capabilities of its cross-screen publisher platform, YFP Pro, to include video-player targeting and reporting. The company has offered a similar targeting capability to its advertiser clients via its Connected Audience Network since 2011. YuMe says publishers will now be able to segment their video inventory based on three different parameters, player size, visibility, and location, and then charge advertisers accordingly during direct sold campaigns. YFP’s improved reporting capabilities will ensure that publishers can better monetize their direct sold and “remnant” video inventory across all screens.

Ericsson has agreed to acquire Microsoft Mediaroom for an undisclosed price. Microsoft’s Mediaroom business is headquartered in Mountain View, California, and focuses on providing solutions for IPTV and multiscreen video distribution. The Mediaroom technology powers TV services from providers such as AT&T U-verse, Telefonica, and Swisscom. It will be incorporated into Ericsson’s Business Unit Support Solutions portfolio. The deal is expected to close during the second half of 2013.

Dallas-based Belo Corp. has renewed its agreement with Broadcast Interactive Media (BIM), a digital ad network and data services provider, for multiple years. Per the deal, Belo will continue to use BIM’s suite of web, video, and mobile publishing solutions to deliver content to users across devices. This includes the BIMvid platform, which allows Belo to deliver video to its network of local TV-affiliate websites, as well as closed-captioning support for Belo’s live and archived video content.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Real-time bidding (RTB) will account for 24.7% of all online video ad spend in the US in 2014, hitting $1.14 billion in the process, according to a new study from Forrester Consulting that was commissioned by RTB video ad provider SpotXchange. In 2012, US online video RTB spending reached $402 million, and for 2013, Forrester projects spending to increase to $686 million. Tie that with $1.14 billion in 2014, and Forrester is forecasting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 57% from 2012-2014.

Celtra, a provider of rich media mobile ad serving and analytics solutions, has appointed Deborah Szajingarten as its new VP/Marketing Communications. Based in the company’s NY office, she will oversee the creation and delivery of Celtra’s marketing communications strategies. Prior to this, Szajingarten led the global communications team at Vimeo.
