Daytime’s number one show, Judge Judy, lives on. Judy Sheindlin has signed a multi-year deal with CBS Television Distribution to continue with the series through 2017. The news comes as no surprise, as the show averages more than 9 million viewers, daily. It is the top-rated, half-hour syndicated court show on TV.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Imagine puppets in real-life couples therapy. That’s the scenario in the upcoming Logo TV series Felt. Produced from real recorded sex therapy and couples therapy sessions, Felt takes actual clients’ voices and puts them into the mouths of puppets for an effect that’s hilarious and shocking. Each episode will follow the stories of several puppet couples, both gay and straight, as they work through their sex and relationship issues. Felt premieres on Monday, May 6 at 10:30p before moving to its regular time slot, Mondays at 10p on Logo TV. Felt is produced by RelativityREAL for Logo, with RelativityREAL’s Tom Forman serving as executive producer on the project alongside RelativityREAL’s Brad Bishop, Adam de la Pena, Maris Berzins, Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Diana Nguyen. Brent Zacky and Pamela Post serve as executive producers for Logo TV.

So You Think You Can Dance returns for a tenth season with a two-night premiere event showcasing America’s talented dancers during the audition rounds Tuesday, May 14 at 8p and Wednesday, May 15 at 9p on FOX. The show will feature host Cat Deeley and resident judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy, as well as guest judges including Minnie Driver, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Wayne Brady, All-Star Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Adam Shankman, among others, at auditions in Austin, Boston, Detroit, Memphis and Los Angeles. Each two-hour show will again feature breathtaking performances as well as suspenseful eliminations, as the contestants compete to be named America’s Favorite Dancers.
 
Bravo has canceled Kathy. The late night talk show, starring comedienne Kathy Griffin, that ran for nearly two seasons. Griffin reportedly announced the news during a stand-up show in Cincinnati on Friday.

Boardroom doors get blown wide open when employees are given the power to make tough decisions on FOX‘s new unscripted workplace experiment Toxic Office: Does Someone Have to Go? In the six-episode series, frustrated bosses hand over the reins of their companies to employees, offering their staffs the chance to make changes in the workplace  even if it means letting co-workers go. The show premieres Thursday, May 23 at 9p on FOX.

The wild, high stakes world of oil drilling is explored in the new Discovery Channel series Backyard Oil, premiering Tuesday, April 23 at 10p. The show follows the fortunes of the most boot-strappin’ oil men in all of Appalachia: mogul Jimmy Reliford and his sidekick Mad Dog; Coomer, who’s raking in $300-thousand a month thanks to an oil strike in his own backyard; a bearded hillbilly named Rascal; and the Page Boys, a bickering father-son team. Backyard Oil is produced for Discovery Channel by Red Line Films.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

A&E has already renewed Bates Motel for a second season. The scripted drama, based on Psycho, will return in 2014.

Fans of reality TV’s first family take note: Keeping Up with the Kardashians is returning for an all-new season, this summer. The trials, tribulations and antics of Kris, Bruce, Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Rob, Kendall and Kylie will be back on Sunday, June 2 at 9p on E!.

Oxygen Media has picked up a sophomore season of the modeling competition series The Face, produced by Shine America with Naomi Campbell as executive producer. The show will return with ten new episodes.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Content Television, a division of Content Media Corporation, has inked a multi-territory distribution deal with Daro Films at MIP-TV. The agreement sees Monaco-based Daro Films picking up all distribution rights throughout Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Portugal and Turkey for the new four-part original drama Run from Acme Films for Channel 4 and seasons one and two of the new half-hour talk show Larry King Now. Also included in the deal are World Production’ mystery drama The Bletchley Circle, seasons one and two of hit thriller Line of Duty, Screenworks’ Amber, the four-part drama Freddy, and season four of Republic of Doyle feature, alongside a package of TV movies and the long-running drama series Highway to Heaven starring Michael Landon. In addition, Daro Films has picked up rights in English speaking Africa to Artists Studio’s The Fall starring Gillian Anderson and crime drama Jack Taylor, starring Iain Glen.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

BBC America is co-producing the new drama Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. Based on the novel by Susanna Clarke and adapted by Peter Harness, the series is set during the Napoleonic Wars in England. It is produced by Cuba Pictures for the BBC and co-produced by BBC America in association with Feel Film, Bell Media’s Space, Far Moor and Screen Yorkshire. The series will premiere in 2014 as part of BBC America’s Supernatural Saturday programming block.

Starz has announced its most ambitious drama in development to date: Fortitude, a 13-part co-production with Sky Atlantic. The series centers on a violent murder that touches everyone in a close-knit community and threatens the future of the town. Fortitude is a Fifty Fathoms/Tiger Aspect production, exclusively for Sky Atlantic in the UK and Starz in the USA. The drama is the first co-production between Sky and Starz, and forms part of Sky’s continued investment in original content. The series, which begins production later this year, is slated to premiere in U.S. and U.K. in 2014.

Wildlife and factual producer Earth Touch has concluded a deal with Smithsonian Channel to co-produce four new wildlife shows: Game of Prides, Speed Kills 2, Great White Code Red, and Black Mamba – Kiss of Death.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

NBC and Esquire Network‘s American Ninja Warrior has added two new co-hosts. NFL Network analyst Akbar Gbaja Biamilia and ESPN’s sports broadcaster Jenn Brown will join Matt Iseman on the competition series. Brown will interview the competitors and provide commentary.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Cinedigm has acquired broad-based digital/VOD rights for US, Canada and Latin American to over 1,000 episodes of television from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation library. The deal, which encompasses both existing episodes and future inventory and includes all genres spanning contemporary and classic programs, represents a major push into the international marketplace for Cinedigm.The deal includes such brand name titles as Correlli, starring Hugh Jackman; the classic An Audience with Dame Edna series; Outland, the 2012 series about a gay science fiction fan club; Double the Fist, the acclaimed Australian slapstick comedy; and At Home with Julia, the romantic comedy/political satire about Australia’s first female Prime Minister.

FremantleMedia International and Vuguru have announced the launch of two original multi-platform comedies, Fetching and Hollywood Help, to the international market. Fetching, which tells the story of a woman who ditches her successful fiance and law career to pursue her dream of owning a doggie-day car, premiered on AOL in June 2012 to millions of views. Hollywood Help is a behind-the-scenes comedy following Max, a struggling actor looking for his first big break in Hollywood.

WestWind Pictures  has announced that Armoza International Media has picked up the international format rights to its series Little Mosque. The deal comes on the heels of Participant Media‘s announcement that it has acquired all six seasons of Little Mosque and will debut the series in the U.S. in August on its new cable network Pivot. Since Little Mosque’s debut on Hulu in the U.S in 2012, American viewers have embraced the series. The critically-acclaimed hit comedy, which completed its six season/91 episode run on CBC in 2011, continues to garner international attention. It is now seen in over 90 countries, including Turkey, Israel, Spain and Italy, has been dubbed or translated into 25 languages.

FremantleMedia International has launched the eagerly anticipated remake of the cult drama Blake’s 7 to international buyers at MIPTV. In development with US cable network Syfy, the science fiction series will be produced by Georgeville TV, the independent studio co-founded by Leon Clarance of Motion Picture Capital, the financing arm of Reliance Entertainment, and producer Marc Rosen.

~  IN MEMORIAM ~

Annette Funicello, an original member of the Mickey Mouse Club and star of several 1960s beach movies with Frankie Avalon, died on Monday from complications due to multiple sclerosis. The actress had been battling the disease for 25 years. She was 70.

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  Univision won the night among A18-49 viewers Friday with a 1.6/6, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, CBS’ Undercover Boss ranked first at 1.7/6, followed by Univision’s Porque el Amor Manda at 1.5/6. ABC’s Shark Tank took over the lead at 9p at 2.1/7, followed by Univision’s  Amores Verdaderos at 1.7/6. At 10p, ABC retained the top spot with 20/20 at 1.8/6. Univision’s Amor Bravio came in second at 1.6/5, followed closely by CBS’ Blue Bloods at 1.5/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

The Weinstein Company has hired Patrick Reardon as Senior Vice President of Television, effective immediately. Reardon, who last served as showrunner for the MTV series Washington Heights, will help to execute all existing TWC reality programming, along with other forthcoming projects to be announced shortly.

Starrett Berry has been hired as Vice President, Broadcast Distribution for MundoFox. Berry previously served as Senior Advisor and Consultant for Una Vez Mas, the largest affiliate group for the national Spanish-language broadcast network, Azteca America. In his new position Berry will work on broadcast distribution initiatives.

Original Productions post-production executive Mike Walsh has been promoted to Vice President Technical Operations. In his new role, Walsh will supervise IT infrastructure capabilities, Technology Services, field production equipment rental and technical support for the company’s editing systems.

Stephen David Entertainment has named Shirley Escott as Vice President of Production and David C. White as Director of Development. Escott previously spent over 5 years as the Co-Executive Producer and EIC at BBC Production USA. White has already worked with Stephen David Entertainment on numerous productions, including The Men Who Built America. Along with the new additions, Randy Counsman has been promoted to Vice President of Development and Tim W. Kelly to Vice President of Post Production. They will both continue to work on the growing slate of scripted and non-fiction television projects.

WCVB, Boston’s news leader, has named JC Monahan as the new co-host of Chronicle and Cindy Fitzgibbon as EyeOpener meteorologist. Monahan, who began working at WCVB in in 2001, will begin co-hosting with Anthony Everett in June and will continue to make appearances on EyeOpener and take on additional news responsibilities. Fitzgibbon starts with the Boston station immediately and joins the station’s EyeOpener team at the end of May. She has forecasted the weather for 17 years and spent the last decade as a meteorologist in Boston.

The Mill LA has expanded its Mill+ design team with the addition of Creative Director Paul Mitchell. Mitchell previously served as Creative Director at Prologue Films and was responsible for multiple award winning design projects, including campaigns for Ford, DuPont, NFL, ESPN and FIFA World Cup.

Marcum Search LLC, the executive recruiting affiliate of accounting and advisory firm Marcum LLP, has appointed Steven Goldmintz a Vice President to head a new Media and  Telecommunications Search Division at the firm.
