Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/06/10

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 6, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

German-owned publishing giant Random House for one is balking at Apple‘s iPad publishing model even though the company has agreed to let publishers set their own prices, per the WSJ. A company source says Apple is demanding a higher cut of the proceeds than Amazon and that there are worries that the spread of $10 eBooks from other publishers will devalue new releases across all platforms. Meanwhile, there are talks of an industry-wide movement among publishers to create their own payment system for electronic sales of newspapers and magazines outside of the iBooks store. (Like Amazon, Apple is asking for a 30% cut of subscription sales.) Given the effectiveness of the Safari web browser on the iPad, the jury is also very much still out on whether or not users will be willing to pay of for subscriptions when they can visit publishers’ web sites for free.

While still responsible for just a fraction of overall sales, Android-based handsets are currently the fastest growing segment of the smartphone market, according to new ComScore data. Phones running on the Google-powered OS currently make up 9% of the market, but that’s up from just 3.8% in Nov. 09. RIM also increased its leading market share slightly to 42.1% of the smartphone market with Microsoft dropping 4 percentage points and Apple holding steady with a 25.4% share. Some 45 million Americans owned smartphones overall, as of Feb. 2010.

Apple says it sold over 300k iPads during its first day in circulation, including pre-orders delivered to customers on Saturday. (By comparison, Apple sold 270,000 first generation iPhones the day they went on sale.) iPad users downloaded over one million apps from Apple’s App Store and over 250,000 eBooks from its iBookstore during the first day. And just in case you’re wondering, Yes, it will Blend.

Elgato, maker of the EyeTV live streaming software suite, has released a new version of its app for the iPhone that enables users to view live TV signals over a 3G connection as well as via Wi-Fi. The solution, available at the App Store for $5, requires a Mac computer running EyeTV version 3.3.3 equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Last month Elgato released a smaller, EyeTV hybrid tuner/video encoder for $150 about the size of a USB drive that brings over-the-air broadcast channels and unencrypted cable channels to a Mac or PC.

Social location-based service Loopt is one of the first in the space out of the gate with the Loopt Pulse iPad app, revealing geolocations of logged in members and offering restaurant and location info, powered by 3rd party providers.

Children’s publisher Oceanhouse Media launched four high definition apps for the Apple iPad including 3 of the top selling Dr. Seuss children’s eBook apps, The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss’s ABC and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! They’re available as free updates for current $2.99 iPhone/iPod Touch customers. The fourth is Bowls HD for $3.99, which plays meditative music mimicking Tibetan singing bowls.

Ranging from $250-$500, the receivers includes 3D support for Side-by-Side (half) and Top-and-Bottom formats that broadcasters are beginning to adopt. ~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

How are humans affected when isolated from humanity and disconnected from media-delivering devices? Taking a page from lifestreaming services such as Justin.tv, Nat Geo Channel has placed web cams in three 8 x 10 isolation cells to allow audiences to peer in to see how 3 volunteers can hack being shut off from TVs, computers and reading material for a week. ExploreSolitary.com, powered by live streaming provider Lifestream, does allow subjects James, Laura and Rick to tweet out to the world via transcribed slips of paper, but they cannot receive any incoming communiques. The stunt is being conducted to promote an upcoming Explorer documentary on the subject of solitary confinement, premiering Sunday, April 11 at 9 pm ET/PT. It’s not all that exciting yet – it’s not too different from watching paint dry. All three seemed to be handling it pretty well so far – James has taken to meditating while Laura is coping by talking to herself (and her audience) incessantly about nothing in particular. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain their composure after a few more days of going cold turkey. I can see it now – parents everywhere may soon install these rooms in their homes.
