Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 2, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

How The Power of Yes Can Help You Get a Job

We tend to get so attached to our daily routines, our beliefs, and our habits, that when asked something outside of the norm, our default answer is always “No.” But what if you said YES? What if one day when a colleague called you up and asked you to go for a hike, while you were comfortably sitting on the couch in your pajamas, procrastinating the phone calls you had to return, instead of going to the “no” default, you paused, pushed all thoughts aside and simply said YES. And then what if on that hike you bumped into someone you haven’t seen in years since you worked on a project together, and that person invited you to a party on Friday night.

Again, instead of saying no because your significant other doesn’t like industry parties, you pause, push all thoughts aside and say, YES. At the party you make 12 new contacts, help 4 complete strangers (one of whom will end up hiring you a year later) and get asked to interview for a job on Monday. The job is a freebie and you’d normally say, no, but instead you say YES.

 While at the interview, not only do you get offered the freebie (to which you say YES) you are also introduced to another producer (who will end up hiring you for your first studio picture in 9 months). The freebie, is a great success and wins numerous awards at top film festivals… and on and on grow the successes, all because you said YES. 

Here are some tips for making the power of YES work for you:

1.  Start noticing and tracking how many requests are made of you each day, and note your answers (yes/no/maybe)

2.  Once you are aware of how many opportunities you receive to say YES, set a criteria for saying NO. In other words, you probably don’t want to say YES to everything, and you don’t want to allow yourself off the hook too easily. So decide what would constitute a NO.

3.  If you’re a creative person, create a chart. Let your imagination decide what it can look like. Write down each YES you say, and determine when it leads to another YES, so you can see how the chart grows and expands, and have visible proof of how your YESes are paying off and creating opportunities.

And Action!

1.  Say YES to one thing you typically say no to.

2.  If you’re open to the exercise in the article, set up a one month plan of action to set yourself up for success.

FCC chairman Julius Genachowski has announced that he will leave his post in the coming weeks. News of Genachowski’s exit comes on the heels of commissioner Robert McDowell’s decision to leave his post, last week. There is no exact date for either departure at this time, although both have said they will leave in the coming weeks.

Hopskoch, the new Transmedia marketing platform, launched Friday and named Craig Singer as its CEO. Singer, a former Vice President at Disney, worked with Disney Online Originals to spearhead developing series for Disney’s online sites and brands.

Robert Schildhouse is joining CBS Television Distribution as Senior Vice President, Digital Licensing and Distribution. In this newly-created position, Schildhouse will formulate strategies for CTD’s first-run series with new and emerging distribution platforms in the digital arena. Schildhouse joins CTD from Hulu, where he served as co-head of content acquisition for the online video streaming service since 2008.

Dave Hamilton has been named Senior Vice President of Leopard Films USA. He begins his new role on April 8 and becomes the first American to head the New York-based prodco. Hamilton will be responsible for driving the company’s growth plans by building on its successful lifestyle slate and through expansion into new genres, with a strong focus on character-driven docusoap, formats and factual entertainment. Hamilton previously worked at Endemol USA as Vice President of Development.

Entravision Communications Corporation has appointed Javier Ortiz as Vice President of Integrated Marketing Solutions for the Las Vegas, Nevada market. He will be responsible for maximizing traditional and digital advertising while developing new business opportunities for growth in the market. Ortiz, last served as Local Sales Manager of Cox Communications for their Cox Media Group broadcast television stations in San Francisco and the Cox Media cable division in Las Vegas.

Vicki Ariyasu has been named to the newly created role of Executive Director, Disney Junior Educational Resource Group. Ariyasu, a longtime consultant to Disney Junior, will lead an in-house team responsible for the curriculum development and focus group studies of Disney Junior content and brand extensions.

Sales executive Andy Schreiber has joined Peace Point Entertainment‘s distribution division. He will be responsible for bringing the company’s extensive catalogues to the US market including theatrical, television, home video, and digital platform rights, as well as Peace Point’s feature film and scripted catalogue worldwide outside of Latin America. Schreiber previously worked at Fun World Media, a film and television production and distribution company.

Food Network and Cooking Channel have tapped Todd Weiser as Vice President, Programming and Development and Mark Levine as Vice President, Programming and Multi-Platform. The new VPs will be charged with developing new series, specials and tentpoles, as well as overseeing current programming for both networks. Weiser last served as Director, Program Development with Animal Planet, while Levine served as Vice President Digital-Emerging Brands, where he led CookingChannelTV.com and Food.com teams. Both will begin their new positions in April.

CMT has promoted Cindy McLean Finke to Vice President, Program Publicity and Communications, while Stephanie Molina joins the network as Vice President, Program Publicity for the West Coast office. In their new roles, Finke and Molina will spearhead the press campaign for the series launch of Dog and Beth: On the Hunt, premiering April 21, and the 2013 CMT Music Awards on June 5. Finke joined the CMT Corporate Communications team as Senior Publicist in 2002. Molina formerly served as VP of Television at Rogers & Cowan.

David Beck has been named Senior Vice President, Social Media of Univision Communications Inc. Beck joined Univision in 2009 and most recently served as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives in the Office of the CEO.

Gaming industry veteran Jeff Nuzzi has been named Director of Digital Media of Rubicon Group Holding. Based at RGH Entertainment in Los Angeles, Nuzzi will lead the company’s efforts to create a world-class digital platform of games, educational and entertainment content for its growing library of intellectual properties.

Veria Living, a multiplatform media company devoted to showcasing healthy lifestyle and wellness programming, has appointed Colleen Cassel as Director of Advertising Sales, effective immediately. Cassel, formerly Director of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships for CBS Television, will be responsible for securing multi-platform integrated deals and spearheading proposal development, planning, research, budgeting and forecasting for each account.

Jeff Olde has been appointed Executive Vice President, Program Development, E! He will oversee original programming and series development for the global pop culture brand. Olde previously served as Executive Vice President, Original Programming, Production & Development at VHI. His new position is effective this summer.

AMC Networks has promoted two executives. Dom Atteritano has been named to Senior Vice President, Legal and Business Affairs, for WE tv, up from Vice President. Brian Gottlock has been name Vice President, Legal and Business Affairs, for IFC, up from senior counsel.

Monica Talan has been appointed Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Relations for Univision Communications Inc., effective immediately. Talan, formerly Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Relations, will continue to be responsible for overseeing all corporate and internal communications, programming public relations and the Company’s media relations efforts.

MarVista Entertainment has appointed three new executives. Winny Poon has been named Vice President and Controller and will be responsible for the company’s financial plans and policies, accounting practices, the maintenance of its fiscal records, and the preparation of financial reports. Tony Vassiliadis has been named Director of Strategic Programs and will launch and implement strategic initiatives that improve the company’s operations and profitability. Hannah Pillemer has been name Creative Executive to oversee projects from early development through final delivery in the film and television market.

Adam Cooper has joined Wenner Media to serve as East Coast Digital Sales Director for Rolling Stone. Cooper will oversee digital revenue for the magazine on the East Coast as well as digital products and strategy. Most recently, Cooper was Senior Digital Account Executive at ESPN.

Adam Smith has been promoted to Vice President, Digital Ad Operations within the ESPN‘s Sales and Marketing Business Operations team. Smith, who joined the Business Operations team last year, will continue to partner with Digital Media and Ad Sales leadership teams to develop global operational strategy to support sales and product development plans and to lead all operational efforts to support and advance digital ad sales for WatchESPN.

Hearst Corporation has announced that Steven R. Swartz will succeed Frank A. Bennack, Jr., as chief executive officer, effective June 1, 2013. Swartz was appointed Hearst’s COO in 2011 and was named president in 2012. Bennack will continue to serve as executive vice chairman of the Hearst Board of Directors and chairman of the Corporation’s Executive Committee.

BBH New York has promoted Julian Cole to communications planning department head, effective immediately. Previously a strategy director, Cole will continue to spearhead BBH New York’s work as the lead creative agency for the Sony PlayStation account, along with Johnny Walker.
