Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/26/11
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 26, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Netflix took a symbolic step in its quest to rival traditional media providers, adding 3.3 million new subscribers to reach 23.6 million subs – nearly double the number added Q1 last year and matching Comcast, the top cable MSO. Worldwide revenue jumped 47% to $719 million and net income increased 88% to $60 million as streaming-only and hybrid plans were added in equal measure. But the company admitted increased competition (from rivals such as Amazon, Hulu and Dish Network/Blockbuster) would slow down growth going forward. In a letter to shareholders, Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings and Chief Financial Officer David Wells played down the threat it poses to established entertainment companies such as pay cable networks and syndication, noting that shows such as Mad Men and Sons of Anarchy don’t appear on the service until a season after they air.
ESPN launches a newly enhanced version of its woman-targeted espnW this morning, which is slowly evolving from a blog to a full-featured site. The site, sponsored by Nike and Gatorade, will add a broader range of coverage of women’s and men’s sports from a female perspective. New sections include an expanded Opinion section, News & Information, Features & Profiles and Training. “Ask the Pros” will enable readers to ask questions of espnW’s panel of pro athletes.
E!’s Royal Wedding coverage on April 29 will include an extensive social media component with E! News’ Jason Kennedy manning a “Social Central” hub to track celebrity tweets and Skype calls from viewing parties around the world. E! Online’s Facebook page will also feature a live stream of the network’s broadcast embeddable on your wall.
Amazon introduced a new Author Interview series providing The Backstory from many best selling authors including Candace Bushnell, Stephen King and Sarah Dessen. The site features interviews, podcasts, videos, tweet sessions and guest reviews.
CBS Sports.com is streaming a live NFL Draft video show starting Thur. on CBSSports.com and CBS Sports Mobile from its studios in New York City. Fans will have the opportunity to view team Twitter feeds and interact with fans while viewing draft selection results.
Hayden Black’s online sitcom Goodnight Burbank debuted on Hulu yesterday, brought back and lengthened this year to become “the first half-hour scripted comedy made for the web.” It’s full of lovable characters (including unfiltered Entertainment reporter and Asperger’s Syndrome afflicted Elizabeth Chivers) and ingenious rips and roars.
A new digital content company dubbed DoubleBounce, headed my former MTV Networks and Fuse executive Matt Farber, launched to create low-cost, short form digital series for the web and mobile devices. The company is working with a group of 16 production companies who produce shows for lifestyle-themed cable networks – including HGTV, Food Network, TLC and MTV. It already has signed agreements with Evolve Media Corp. and Metacafe to distribute and sell the shows to advertisers.
A new start-up named Storify launched yesterday as an online news and information filtering service, funded with $2 million from Khosla Ventures. The site, tested during a beta period by reporters from The Washington Post, NPR and PBS, offers a platform to sift through publicly available content from sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube with an emphasis on social media context and reaction.

Getting viewers to “check in” to an online service while their watching TV has become a competitive business and Yahoo wants a piece of the action. Yahoo has acquired TV Check-in service IntoNow for a reported $20 million in cash and stock plus incentives, just 12 weeks after it launched. The IntoNow platform, spun out of contextual online video management and technology company Auditude, set itself apart from competitors with an elegant iPhone app that integrates with Netflix and, like Shazam, recognizes precise episodes of shows by listening to them through the mike in your phone for a few seconds. Yahoo will utilize the technology to improve engagement and user experience across online video, search, mobile and connected TV. Look for IntoNow to add apps for browsers, Android and iPad and eventually expand into international markets.
