4/24/07

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 24, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC Sports has just made a new multi-year agreement with U.S. Figure Skating where NBC will broadcast live high-definition coverage of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The three-year partnership, which runs through the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, will also include the Saturday night primetime coverage of the ladies free skate and the international event Skate America. The total package contains 10 hours of event coverage, various marketing and broadband rights, along with live coverage on NBCSports.com and U.S. Figure Skating’s web site at IceNetwork.com. Furthermore, the schedule for the U.S. Figure Skating Championship event has been changed so that all finals will air live on the weekends and they will not go head-to-head with the NFL.

Tonight’s Finale:
The CW
:  Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll at 9p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ABC has announced its May Sweep-timed series season finales:
April 26 – October Road at 1001p
May 8 – George Lopez at 8p
May 13 – America’s Funniest Home Videos Part 1 at 8p
May 16 – According to Jim at 8p
May 17 – Ugly Betty at 8p
May 18 – America’s Funniest Home Videos Part 2 at 8p
May 20 – Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Two-Part at 7p & 8p; Desperate Housewives at 9p; and Brothers & Sisters at 10p
May 21 – Dancing with the Stars (Performance Show) at 8p and The Bachelor at 901p
May 22 – Dancing with the Stars: The Results Show at 8p and Boston Legal at 1001p
May 23 – Lost at 9p

At the Lifetime upfront presentation scheduled for this morning, the network will announce it has ordered up another miniseries – the first being Human Trafficking in 2005.  The new miniseries is a four-hour drama called The Gathering, from producer David Eick and Sony Pictures Television. The story is about a woman’s disappearance and the subsequent search for her reveals a group of witches, living and practicing their craft in New York.

Doctor Who will continue on the SCI FI Channel as the network and BBC Worldwide Americas just completed an acquisition deal for the U.S. premiere of the third season set to debut in July. David Tennant returns in season three as Doctor Who and is joined by a new sidekick Martha Jones played by Freema Agyeman. The series starts with the Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Runaway Bride with guest actress Catherine Tate.

LIME, the multi-platform green/healthy living brand, has introduced the LIME Ad Network which will bring together established bloggers and web sites that are focused on wellness, eco-living and personal growth, giving advertisers the opportunity to reach consumers interested in the “green” market.

The Weather Channel has put both of its climate-focused content elements under one umbrella called Forecast Earth. The weekly series The Climate Code with Dr. Heidi Cullen will expand to a full hour program and take on its new name as of April 29. The show will continue dialogue relating to the science of global warming and other environmental topics, plus have eco-friendly tips and more. The network’s climate web site One Degree has re-launched under the new name and is now available at www.weather.com/forecastearth. It will contain video content, blogs, interactive elements and content produced from the network and exclusively for online.

Alloy, Inc., the youth-targeted media and marketing company, has inked a deal to acquire Channel One Communications Corporation from Primedia, Inc for a price tag estimated to be between $5-10 million. Channel One, the news/public affairs content provider for students in middle and high schools across the country, has seen major losses over the past year due primarily, according to Alloy, to a lack of spending in the technology arena, the high costs of maintaining its distribution system, and transient salespeople.  Alloy plans to work with schools and educators to strengthen the network, which will include an evaluation and possible upgrade to the infrastructure of Channel One’s entire system.  Simultaneously Alloy will be focus on the channel reaching a financial break-even over the next eighteen months.

The reaction to news outlets showing video from the Virginia Tech shooter has been widespread.  Check today’s Emails to the Editor for more reactions from Cynopsis readers. Please feel free to send in your Email to the Editor to me [email protected], but only those signed will be considered for publication.

This Thursday, look for the Cynopsis Weekender College Edition sponsored by Greek, A New ABC Family Original Series coming in July. The edition will include four editorials on television chosen from the 150+ essays submitted from college students all around the world.  The edition will also include a special section of Situation Wanted ads sent in by college students all looking to be hired into our industry.  Be sure to pay special attention to these ads!

CYNOPSIS EMAILS TO THE EDITOR:

RE: News outlets showing Virginia Tech shooter’s video

4/23:

I agree wholeheartedly with Stephen Collins’ letter to you.

Your site documents the decreasing audiences for television news programmes and the falling revenues for news organisations.  Do these companies NOT employ a market researcher/account planner/futurologist/trend watcher?  I guess not.

As long as news organisations continue to pollute the atmosphere with the rantings of deranged mass murderers,  people all over the world will proudly say, by watercooler, in the pub, on the school bus “I don’t watch television news”.  It is becoming a badge of honour.

I predict a big decline in audiences over the next year.

NBC and everyone who showed that mass murderer’s product deserves to lose audiences and revenues!

Boycotts work.

— Carol Howes-Wright, account planner, London, England

4/23:

Stephen, while I agree that the videos are sensational, much of what we see now and have been seeing for decades IS sensational.  That is what makes it news.  The old journalism catch phrase “if it bleeds, it leads” has stuck with us for a good reason – that’s what sells newspapers, creates ratings and advertising revenue.

I don’t know that editors have ever really weighed “for the common good” (think yellow journalism).  I think they would go as far as the public would let them and just like television producers and networks, they push the line a little more each time.  That topic is one for another time.

I believe people wanted to be able to see this young man to try to understand, somehow, how he could have done what he did.  Unfortunately, this does not seem to be possible, but perhaps it helped some people put their minds at ease or were able to move past the story.

I do not understand, however, the outrage of people with this video, but not the same outcry when we see Osama Bin Laden on our networks and local stations for sometimes over a week, replaying his propaganda and threats to our nation.  Is THAT to be for the common good?

Which is giving more power – playing the video of a dead mentally disturbed college student or the ramblings of a living, known terrorist who constantly threatens and demeans America?

Is this worse than playing 911 tapes from dead victims of 9/11 or other crimes?  I would say no.  911 tapes are, in my opinion ONLY sensational journalism with very little newsworthy information, only emotionalism.  911 tapes should never be played, but only transcribed if necessary to the story.  Unfortunately, we have already broken suit on that and it will never end.

One more comment about the copycat line.  I don’t know how anyone can copycat something no one understands.  There will always be mass murder in our society, unfortunately, as it has happened many times before this and will continue to happen unless all mentally disturbed people can be stopped before they do it – a la MINORITY REPORT.  If we only lived in a science fiction world where good always wins…

4/23:

I’m sure nobody thinks about baseball and education in the same thought, but Major League Baseball helped prove a theory a few years back when they decided not to give any camera time to the over zealous fans who jumped onto the field during a game.  Oddly enough, incidents of this rarely occur anymore.  News organizations would be smart to follow Major League Baseballs lead.  I agree with Stephen Collins that due to this lapse in judgment, there will be copycats; I can only hope there will be no more glorification.

4/23:

I have to agree with the email from Stephen Collins regarding the airing of the shooter’s video, not only on NBC, but on all the other news organizations that took their feed and ran with it.  All it did was to help perpetuate the mistaken glory and sensationalism of the crime.

It’s a sad situation for a news organization to be in, when they mistakenly confuse the “public’s right to know”, with ratings points.

As one of those “public people”, quite frankly I don’t want to know everything there is to know about a sick, twisted murderer such as this.  If there were some compelling knowledge, or a way to prevent this from happening again, it would be worth seeing.  But sadly, it wasn’t.   All it accomplished is for the murderer to get his face on TV, which was the object of sending the video in the first place.  Everyone of the news organizations that aired it is equally responsible.  The truly sad reality, is that it’s just a matter of time until the next shooting occurs, and that shooter sends his video to a news organization for them to air.  Let’s hope they have learned a lesson from this one.

Editor’s Note: Today on the Oprah Winfrey Show, her guests will include NBC News’ Brian William and Steve Capus talking with Oprah about the decision to air the tapes; also joining Oprah will be Dr. Michael Welner, forensic psychiatrist and consultant for ABC News; Dr. Susan Lipkins, a psychologist and expert in campus violence; two fathers who lost their sons in the Columbine killings; and two families who lost their daughters in the Virginia Tech massacre.

4/20:

There was nothing in those videos that will ever help anyone to stop another such spree.  Nor do the videos answer the question of why this person did what he did.  The videos are sensational, indeed, and interesting, to be sure.  But airing them, sadly, glorifies the killer and will, I predict, create copycats.  News organizations will ALWAYS defend this sort of thing, but it isn’t news, it’s sensationalism.  Editors used to take into consideration “the public good” in deciding what to print or put on the air.  Now all they seem to consider is their ultimate horror:  getting scooped.
