~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

Sci Fi.com and Sci Fi Magazine announced a pilot pick up of comedic Outer Space Astronauts, to air exclusively on SCI FI Pulse, and viewers will help decide if the show gets a green light. Visitors are given access to five vignettes from the show and asked to fill out a survey explaining what they think. Sci Fi says it will also take traffic into account when deciding whether or not to pick up the show.
 
Court TV is partnering with Applebee’s and Suzuki Automotive on a multiplatform game cutting across television, on air, online and mobile. Court TV will drive viewers to sign up online to play the 8-Day Mystery Challenge. Players will receive clues each day via email, text message and video posting with additional information to be gleaned from Court TV’s primetime programming. Viewers who crack the code each day win a chance to share in the $25,000 top prize.
 
MTV is adding the first user-generated category the MTV Movie Awards this year. Users can upload their movie parodies of up to 5 minutes in length to the Yahoo talent portal from April 23 to be considered for a Golden Popcorn award, to be given out June 3.
 
Nickelodeon is developing an online world for Naked Brothers Band reachable from virtual world Nicktropolis, where kids can create a show-themed avatar, visit a mock recording studio and play games geared around music from the show. It is Nickelodeon’s first virtual world extension for a live action show.
 
Scripps Network is offering exclusive On Demand footage from the new season of The Next Food Network Star before the show’s June 3 premiere, including behind-the-scenes footage and sneak peeks of upcoming episodes.

Earth Day on Sunday brought the sprouting of several new environmentally-themed sites and initiatives:
 
Lime launched a “green” online ad network, the first site to aggregate eco-minded blogs and community sites for advertisers. Lime’s ad sales team, headed by Christine Engelbrechtsen/VP, Integrated Sales & Marketing, will sell to the sites individually and as a group, sharing revenue on a site-by-site basis. The multiplatform brand hopes the network will double lime.com’s current reach and plans to announce more partners in the coming weeks. It launches with:

  • Mongabay.com – environmental science site established to raise interest in wildlife and wetlands
  • EcoGeek.org – covers technology designed to mitigate human impact on the environment
  • EcoSherpa.com – sustainable living blog
  • The Beauty Brains – scientific answers to questions pertaining to beauty and cosmetics
  • Savvy Vegetarian – features popular vegetarian recipes, cooking tips & reports on veggie lifestyle
  • Eco-chick.comblog targeting women, tackling eco-fashion, new products etc.

Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive launched Sprig, an eco-friendly shopping/lifestyle site run by former Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker. The female-targeted site offers info on home, beauty, food, fashion and family and features environmental news, original video and user-submitted content.
 
Green.NationalGeographic.com officially launched with more than 2,000 pages of news, how-to-videos, eco-friendly travel information and green lifestyle tips and advice. The launch follows Nat Geo online division’s acquisition of TheGreenGuide.com last month.
 
Hearst Magazines Digital Group introduced its first standalone website The DailyGreen.com. Calling itself “the consumer’s guide to the green revolution,” the site focuses on documenting climate change and giving practical advice on greener living.
 
The CW launched the “Free 2 B Green” campaign with the Stop Global Warming Virtual March and the Natural Resources Defense Council. It will include on-air, online, mobile and grassroots outreach efforts to raise awareness on environmental issues.

Digerati iSales seeks Online Advertising Sales Executive


 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Facebook, which has served as an important networking source for students during the Virginia Tech shootings, continues to inspire fascination in the venture capital community of Silicon Valley, attracting a steady stream of potential takeover suitors. Yahoo made a bid for Facebook last year in upwards of $1 billion, according to reports. A recent profile of company founder Mark Zuckerberg in Fast Company suggests the company may resist further buyout offers in order to test an IPO.
 
Napster
is set to deploy an over-the-air subscription music service in Japan. NTT DoCoMo customers who subscribe to Napster’s Go PC music service will have unlimited access to its digital catalog of tracks. Subscribers can download songs from their handsets or connect to playlists set on their PCs. The deal also offers integrated billing through NTT’s DoCoMo wireless service. Napster Japan is joint venture between Tower Records Japan and NTT DoCoMo.
 
Peer-to-peer ad supported MP3 sharing site Qtrax signed a deal with Sony BMG Music to offer a selection of its artists’ songs for free. The site will generate revenue by selling ads to be played before each track is listened to. Users will also be offered click-to-buy purchase options before accessing songs. Qtrax, which hopes to launch in September, is also in negotiations with Universal Music Group and indie agency Merlin.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

MoveOn.org dropped its lawsuit against Viacom for ordering the removal of its Colbert Report parody “Stop the Falsiness ” from YouTube, one of more than 160,000 pulled due to copyright violations. MoveOn says Viacom conceded pulling the clip in error. It has since been restored to YouTube.
 
Imagine Communications
introduced its first Switched Digital Video system, enabling cable operators to free up bandwidth by deploying Variable Bit Rate and statistical multiplexing. The SDV system addresses video quality and channel change latency issues and can deliver up to 50 percent more streams per QAM channel.
 
Pace integrated its newest set-top boxes, the Tahoe HD-DVR and the Vegas SD-DVR, with Tandberg Television’s OpenStream Digital Services Platform. OpenStream allows operators to deploy next generation on-demand services using VOD servers, applications and billing systems. The platform is currently deployed in more than 80 markets serving 15 million digital cable subscribers.
 
Set-top box gaming company Zodiac Interactive and ad-supported game developer Skyworks Technologies are teaming up to develop dual-platform “Advergames” for distribution online and through digital set-top boxes. The games will launch to over 13 million digital set-top subscribers later this year, according to the companies.
 
Verizon’s FiOS TV is now serving up HD feeds of HGTV, Food Network and Lifetime Movie Network, bringing the total amount of HD channels it offers to at least 27 in most markets.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~


Interpublic became the first ad agency to subscribe to Tivo’s Stop//Watch ratings service. The subscription, funded through the Interpublic Emerging Media Lag, allows for MAGNA Global, Initiative and Universal McCann to have full access to the service’s second-by-second program and commercial ratings product, enabling more precise ratings and viewer engagement analysis.
 
There’s hope in the digital ad community that Google‘s planned acquisition of DoubleClick will lead to the development of a richer array of ad serving tools and products, according to comments made by Ed Montes, EVP, managing director of Havas-owned Media Contacts a conference call set up by Piper Jaffray. He shrugged off concerns that the acquisition will make Google too powerful, noting neither own any content yet. Not all of his colleagues share his view, however. Sir Martin Sorrell, head of #2 ad group WPP, was quoted in The Times of London over the weekend saying the acquisition raised issued about whether or not Google should have access to client and agency data to use for its own purposes. WPP was one of the firms in the bidding for DoubleClick.
 
Farmers Insurance Group will sponsor the 2007 America’s Favorite City survey, launching on April 30 on TravelandLiesure.com and to be cross-promoted with content on CNN Headline News and CNN.com. CNN Ad Sales and Travel + Leisure created multiplatform ad packages for the survey including broadband video, polls, photo galleries and an online sweepstakes on TravelandLeisure.com that will send the winner to Sydney, Australia.
 
Mercedes-Benz created a microsite to create a place for prospective buyers to virtually interact with its new C-Class line of cars. Users who registered on MBUSA.com were sent a mailer with a personal access code to get them into the “More to C” site, which features 360-degree views and video footage of the car in action.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

User generated videos made up 47% of the total online video market in the US in 2006, according to media analyst firm Screen Digest. By 2010 more than half (55%) of all video content consumed online in the US will be user generated, representing 44 billion video streams. On the other hand, user generated videos will make up just 15% of total revenues in 2010, as a sustainable business model around the phenomenon has been slow to develop.
 
More than 70 percent of Americans 15-34 years old are active users of social networks, according to TNS Media Intelligence research conducted for Fox Interactive Media, the News Corp. division that runs MySpace. Thirty-one percent of online users surveyed said they spent more time online because of social networking sites. When asked how they would choose to spend a 15-minute block of free time, 17% said they would visit a social network, compared to 15% who said they would watch TV.

George Cheeks
was promoted to the new position of EVP, Business Affairs and Co-General Counsel, MTV Networks. He will oversee MTVN Music and Music Strategy, the Logo and Films Group, the MTVN Entertainment Group and MTVN Global Digital Music Group. George will share the EVP post with Andra Shapiro, who will take over responsibility of MTVN Kids and Family, International, Content Distribution and Marketing, and MTVN Litigation and Intellectual Property. They both report to Rich Eigendorff, acting COO of MTVN.
 
Tim Hanlon
, Senior VP of Denuo, the media futures division of Publicis Groupe, joined the advisory board of interactive television advertising firm Visible World.
 


 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

FlickerLab dreamed up Sat and Trans, the Bad Fats Brothers, to educate online viewers on the evils of greasy, fatty foods. A 65-second webisodes, created in partnership with Porter Novelli and their client the American Heart Association, is a nice piece of flash animation that should help get the point across to its target audience. The site includes AIM icons and wallpapers for free download as well as fast fats facts on better eating habits. And it’s all done with tongue firmly in cheek. “Having a bad day?,” asks Sat. “I’m sure it’s nothing a bacon double cheeseburger can’t fix!”
