Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 23, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With 15 strokes of the pen, major NCAA conference realignment may soon grind to a halt. Presidents of each of the 15 current and incoming schools in the ACC signed off on a Grant of Rights agreement that would penalize any defecting conference teams by forfeiting its media rights to the league if they choose to go elsewhere. The deal runs concurrently with the league’s media deal with ESPN through the 2026-27 season.
”This announcement further highlights the continued solidarity and commitment by our member institutions,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford said in a statement to reporters. ”The Council of Presidents has shown tremendous leadership in insuring the ACC is extremely well positioned with unlimited potential.”
Sunday’s NBA Playoff game between the Lakers and Spurs drew a 4.6 in the overnight ratings, according to Nielsen, marking the highest-rated opening weekend playoff game in ABC in 10 years, according to the company.
NFL Network laid out its coverage plans for this week’s 78th annual NFL Draft, where a record-high 47 hours of live coverage of the three-day event is in the lineup. Draft Week programming began this week and will include daily editions of NFL AM, Path to the Draft shows through Wednesday at 6p and at 11a on Thursday and Friday, as well as Around the League Live. Draft expert Mike Mayock and host Rich Eisen headline the roster of analysts, reporters, hosts and college coaches who will be participating which will include guests coaches that include LSU’s Les Miles, Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly, Stanford’s David Shaw and Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin. Before the first round gets underway on Thursday, NFL Network’s Melissa Stark and Kevin Frazier will be live from the Red Carpet. NFL Network will also be inside the homes of prospects Matt Barkley, Margus Hunt, Alec Ogletree and Tyler Wilson as they await word of their future homes.
The NHL’s move to slate six outdoor games for the 2013-14 season will be worth $30 million apiece with the extra revenue set to be split evenly between and the league and players, according to a report by the CBC.
Tennis Channel could one day become part of team Al Jazeera, according to The New York Post. The report states that the cable company, which already distributes beIN Sport, is exploring a move to acquire Tennis Channel and add to its foothold in U.S. sports media.
WWE is taking its brand to E!, where the channel will carry the new reality series Total Divas, which featured the women of the WWE. The series will explore “life beyond the ring for seven WWE Divas who must wrestle with the challenges of life in the spotlight, a grueling work and travel schedule, and the intense competition for prominence in a career that leaves little time for a personal life.” The show kicks off with WrestleMania, marking the first time that any television series was granted exclusive behind-the-scenes access to WWE.

Multiplatinum recording artist Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and English rock band The Heavy will collaborate on the music for ESPN’s presentation of the 2013 NFL Draft from Radio City Music Hall in New York, which starts on Thursday. 50 Cent’s “New Day” and “We Up”, as well as The Heavy’s “How You Like Me Now?” and “What Makes a Good Man” will be used coming in and out of commercial breaks as well as in highlight packages of league prospects. Both artists added customized lyrics that embody the theme of athletic success and of players achieving their goal of playing professional football.
After teaming with the NBA to create an all-digital NBA Banking account, BBVA Compass is looking to Kevin Durant and James Harden to help promote it. The two All-Stars are appearing in advertising touting the product and the bank’s #realfan social media after being named global brand ambassadors for the bank. This week, the bank will launch a spot times with the playoffs featuring Durant.
Major League Baseball, in cooperation with all 30 of its MLB Clubs, is hosting private screenings of the film 42 for teens in grades 8-12 across the country and in Canada. Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig will personally host the first screening in Milwaukee today with Sharon Robinson, daughter of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson and MLB Educational Programming Consultant. All students participating in the screenings will have access to the movie free of charge and can share their experience online through Iam42.com.
Golf Digest is teaming with the United States Golf Association and the PGA of America to promote a new initiative Time for Nine. The campaign will look to encourage fans to use a two-hour window of free time to play nine holes of golf. Golf Digest will create a list of nine-hole-friendly golf courses that will appear online.
ESPN Audio series Mike & Mike has a new look, with ESPN’s Creative Services team redesigning the show’s logo to showcase that Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic are available for listeners not just “in the Morning,” but any time.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter was the victim of a hacked Twitter account on Monday, which was a series of tweets unleashed stating that he was resigning and was involved in corruption. FIFA confirmed the attack to reporters.
USA Today Sports launched a new platform targeting social news dubbed For the Win. The outlet looks to deliver content designed “specifically to resonate on social networks and non-traditional media channels and platforms” with Right Guard serving as the exclusive launch partner. The platform was conceived of, and is managed by, Mark Pesavento and Jamie Mottram, who created Yahoo! Sports’ blog network. The editorial team includes Chris Chase, Paul Myerberg, Chris Strauss, Nick Schwartz, Laken Litman, Ted Berg, and Sean Highkin, with Mike Foss serving as editor.
Sqor, the Virtual Fan Network product that connects athletes to fans via social media, announced NFL draft coverage plans that will include the likes of Brett Favre, Chris Canty and Mo Claiborne. The new platform will feature Favre tweeting and offering video analysis of the top picks of the first round of Thursday night’s draft. The service offers an aggregation experience that blends the latest from social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as sports news sites such as Sporting News and ESPN, and video, photo and original athlete produced content. The private beta of Sqor will be available to a small group of users on May 14, 2013.
Outdoor Channel announced a multi-year distribution agreement with Comcast’s Xfinity to make the network’s programming available on demand for multi-platform viewing by XFINITY TV customers across the country.
