Yahoo aims to shine some light on the underserved adult (25-54) woman demographic with Yahoo Shine. The new destination aggregates original content as well as relevant fare from other sections of Yahoo and offers syndicated material from partners including Conde Nast, Hearst and Rondale. It also provides a glimpse where the new Yahoo is headed, adopting a white-space laden blog format organized around the demo rather than the topic.



ESPN‘s inaugural early round telecasts of The Masters will be accompanied by a generous helping of multiplatform coverage this year. Highlights include live HD streaming of ESPN’s feed on ESPN360.com, live streaming of Amen’s Corner (holes #15 & 16) on masters.org, live audio updates and interviews on ESPNRadio.com and live look ins and highlights on ESPN.com.
Comcast/Lionsgate/SPT’s multiplatform service Fearnet scored an off network exclusive. Episodes of NBC‘s horror anthology series Fear Itself, premiering May 29 on NBC, will be offered on Fearnet.com and Fearnet’s VOD channel beginning Labor Day, Sept. 1, along with outtakes, director commentary and additional scenes.
VH1 Mobile announced two new applications this week at the CTIA show in Vegas. “VH1 Watch and Discuss Live Chat” enables VH1 viewers to connect via programming chat rooms tied to VH1’s on-air schedule. Launching at the end of April is the “Flavor of Love” mobile game, posing challenges seen on the show including pie fights, sky writing and water gun battles.
Major League Baseball Advanced Media has a new teammate in China – MySpace Founder Brad Greenspan. Mr. Greenspan, who owns and operates several popular web properties in China, licensed the online rights to develop a Major League Chinese portal through BroadWeb Asia‘s Shanghai-based HupoTV. The site launched last week during the league’s Asian road trip, featuring video highlights, photos, features and stats. The site will also stream a “number” of live games during the season.


OpenSocial opened its arms to another adopter, as hi5 became the latest social network to launch a developer’s platform.  hi5 is the first OpenSocial networking platform to offer a messaging API, allowing application builders to offer notifications, invites and other features.
Warner Bros. Television is enlisting the help of video search and targeting firm Digitalsmiths to help manage the video inventory of a new WB video site slated to launch in the coming weeks, reports Daisy Whitney in TVWeek. Digitasmiths provides tools to help visitors find what they’re looking for online and serve ads to the content contextually. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out Daisy’s excellent video podcast, New Media Minute. This week she tries to get to the bottom of who’s watching Hulu.
Local station website online programming service TitanTV launched a trio of new series recapping the latest episodes of three of the TV’s most popular reality shows – Survivor, America’s Next Top Model and Dancing With the Stars.
Chumby Industries, makers of the cutesy chumby media device, secured $12.5 million in Series B financing led by JK&B Capital with additional funding from existing investors, Avalon Ventures, Masthead Venture Partners and O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures.
The mutable online video firm ROO Group is changing its name to KIT Digital to help give the company a fresh start. The video search and P2P streaming provider, which recently announced several management changes and relocated to New York, also said it will buy the remaining 49% of internet ad agency Sputnik for $4 million it does not already own.
Free ad-supported music service SpiralFrog signed a deal to add the catalog of Warner/Chappel Music to its roster of audio and video content. The site delivers offers free ad-accompanied downloads of more than 1 million songs and 4,000 music videos, claiming almost 850,000 users.

Accessing WAP sites by having to type in the URL has severely dampened mobile interactivity. NBC Mobile has completed partnerships with Verizon, AT&T and Research in Motion to give users direct access to more than 60 NBCU mobile sites directly from these carrier’s home screens. NBC expects the integration to increase traffic to the ad supported sites, making the mobile platform a more important part of the media and promotional mix.
MySpace improved its mobile text messaging alert program with a new partnership with mobile transaction manager MBlox, giving U.S.  customers of Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Alltel, U.S. Cellular and Virgin Mobile access to the program. The integration gives over 90% of MySpace’s users access to real time messages and friend requests.
Gemstar-TV Guide International expanded its relationship with Japan’s KDDI to include its G-Guide mobile IPG. The two companies will also work to develop a mobile terrestrial digital video broadcasting service in Japan.
Speculation is mounting that Microsoft and Yahoo are closing in on a deal, with some saying announcement could be forthcoming as swoon as this week.


Yahoo’s Shine site launches at an interesting time as reports circulate that leader in the online woman’s space Glam Media is cutting guaranteed payments to some of its publisher partners in order to usher in a new ad program. Glam will allow publishers to cherry pick the ads they want to run on their own servers, but at the same time will discontinue running “house ads” which thus far have helped partners fill empty inventory.
is spending $25 million on an ambitious rebranding campaign that will include a new logo and new on air look for Starz, its six standard def movie channels, its 4 HD channels, the Vongo online service and the StarzPlay broadband service. The campaign includes a series of 30-second TV spots as well as online buys on a variety of entertainment themed sites including AOL and Amazon.com’s IMDB.com.


While some forecasters are pulling back on online ad projections ZenithOptimedia upgraded its estimates of increases in U.S. online ad spending this year from 19% to 23.4%, citing the continued shift from traditional to interactive media as the rationale for the renewed optimism. Online video and social network advertising are expected to benefit from recession-related redirection of spending as well as high profile streaming events such as Summer Olympics.
Price has become an increasingly important factor in picking a wireless carrier, according to new research from comScore, even as users seek service plans and handsets that provide mobile internet access. The new study also found rising usage of the mobile internet. More than half of users with internet-enabled phones reported surfing at least once a day, compared to only 35% in during the fall of ’06 when the study was last conducted.


Scripps Networks made a trio of promotions, effective immediately. Freddy James joins HGTV.com as VP & Site Director. Andy Singer will fill Freddy’s former post as VP/Programming at DIY Network. He comes from sister network, HGTV, where he was VP/ Original Programming. Finally, Laura Sillars was upped from director to VP/Original Programming at HGTV.
Out-of-home and entertainment advertising veteran Eric Joseph was named President and COO of mobile marketing and applications provider 3rd Dimension. Eric relieves Paul Grillo of the President role (who will retain his position as CEO) and replaces previous COO Bruce Laskin, who died unexpectedly in December of 2007.

TV Guide.com continues to add content and functionality in its quest to become the online mecca for TV fans on the web. A new “ Returning Favorites” section updates viewers on when their favorite shows are returning; TVGuide’s proprietary video search engine combs network sites for full episodes and related content and enables users to build a playlist using a “clip collector” tool. The site is also deploying various web 2.0 techniques to help build traffic, according to TV Guide Online SVP & GM Paul Greenberg, including assigning writers to start discussions on social network fan sites and launching a planned embeddable widget that will aggregate top-viewed, professionally-produced video. The strategy seems to be paying off as the TVGuide.com even managed to increase visits and page views during the Writers’ Strike.
