Time Warner Cable replaced the Fox Cable Networks and Discovery Networks channels it had previously removed from its controversial iPad app on Friday, after the companies filed cease and desist orders two weeks prior, reports Variety. However, Viacom channels remain off the app pending the results of opposing lawsuits filed by both TW Cable and Viacom. Time Warner Cable added four new channels late last week including Sundance Channel, bringing the total to 60 networks currently offered on the live viewing iPad app.
Google announced it will stop hosting videos altogether on its old Google Video site beginning April 29; if you still have anything up there – now would be the time to remove it. Google will allow you to download the video content free, but anyone interested in reposting to Google’s preferred video site, YouTube, is still limited to YouTube’s 15-minute duration rule. All videos hosted on Google Video will be erased once and for all on May 13.
3NET, the 3D cable network joint venture between Sony, Discovery and IMAX, have green lit a 4-hour miniseries about the Civil War scheduled to premiere this fall – the first embarked upon on the subject in 3D. David W. Padrusch, Director of “The Civil War 3D” (working title) for Towers Productions, LLC, will also serve as Executive Producer along with the company’s founder and chief creative officer, Jonathan Towers.

Twitter is in talks to buy TweetDeck for around $50 million, one of the most popular desktop software platforms used to manage Twitter accounts among power users, according to a WSJ report. TweetDeck was reported to have been a target of UberMedia two months ago, but the deal apparently never went through.
Seattle-based real estate site Zillow, known best for estimating the value of nearby properties, is filing for an IPO hoping to raise $57 million, according to an SEC filing. The company reported revenues of $30.5 million in 2010, up 74% from 2009. Zillow ranked as the #3 real estate site in March 2011, according to Hitwise, receiving 5.36% of Real Estate visits for a 53% increase compared to March 2010. Among all sites, Zillow’s visits have increased 83% year-over-year.
Meredith Video Studios signed an agreement with Premiere Retail Networks to develop, create and produce custom video content that PRN will distribute to digital screens in more than 4,500 retail and supermarket locations across the U.S. Distributed content will include nationally syndicated women’s lifestyle show “Better” and broadband video networks BetterTV.com, Parents.com and MyFirstBaby.com.
So called “content farm” Demand Media released a statement on Monday claiming that predictions that traffic has declined 66% at its flagship eHow site are “significantly overstated.” (Google recently amended its search algorithm with the ongoing release of its “Panda” edition that adversely hit search traffic to eHow.) The company instead described the negative impact as “moderate.”
Wal-Mart is acquiring Mountain View, CA-based social media platform Kosmix for an undisclosed amount. Kosmix searches and analyzes connections in real-time data streams to power services such as TweetBeat, a real-time social media filter for live events; Kosmix.com, a site to discover social content by topic; and health and medical info site RightHealth.
Video encoding/TV Everywhere specialist Envivio filed for its own IPO with the SEC, hoping to raise $69 million in public funding. For the year ended Jan. 31, 2011, the company claimed revenues of $30 million, almost doubling the previous year’s total of $16.28 million. It hopes to list on the NASDAQ under the symbol ENVI.
Online, women are more engaged than men, spending more time on fewer sites during a single sitting, according to a new Nielsen analysis:
- Nielsen data shows that women talk 28% more and text 14% more than men every month; they are also heavier users of social features of phones (SMS, MMS, social networking) compared to men who tend to use features like GPS, email & internet more
- Women also visit more social and community sites, which is especially important given the popularity of immediate online/social discussion during major TV events like awards shows and reality programming
- For television advertisers, women tend to watch specials and awards shows live so they can engage in immediate “community viewing” discussions. And they use DVRs to time-shift recurring series programming as they fit television into their schedules when it is most convenient and relevant to them
- DVR penetration may not be as high across all ethnic female groups but it has more than tripled among African American and Hispanic women in the past 3+ years to reach 37.4% and 32% respectively, according to Nielsen
Microsoft went public with its app store for its Office 365 cloud-based software suite, selling web-based applications that work on the platform including Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint. Working on “the cloud” enables users to saves files directly to Microsoft servers.
MXP4 is launching the first social music gaming app for Facebook, dubbed Bopler Games (beta), designed to engage fans while creating a new monetization avenue for record labels, artists and marketers. Fans can play 60 second clips of songs within Bopler up to three times per day for free, then are subsequently charged using Facebook credits. The label launches with 4 music games with music from artists including Kt Tunstall, Lilly Allen, Digital Underground, Norah Jones, Afrika Bambaataa, Culture Club, Big Country, Jonas Brothers and Fall Out Boy.
Jonathan D. Sumber, most recently a manager of digital accounts for Time Inc’s Media Networks, is joining Hearst Television as Director/Digital Sales, based at the company’s New York City headquarters.
David Brown has been upped to EVP, GM at Meredith Integrated Marketing. The promotion gives David expanded oversight of Meredith Integrated Marketing’s Content and Customer Relationship Marketing (CRM) business, including supervision of Directive, its database analytics agency.
