Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 17, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Flying Bark Productions, Australian producer of kid’s/family animated programming, and A Stark Production have joined together to establish the new company, A Stark Entertainment.  A Stark Entertainment will fall under the Flying Bark Productions banner, and will be focused on creating and developing indie kid’s entertainment programming.  Heading creative direction is Avrill Stark, serving as Managing Director and Creative Director, A Stark Entertainment; additionally she has been appointed Creative Director, Flying Bark Productions.  A Stark Entertainment opens up shop with two of Avrill Stark’s properties, Billy’s Blocks, a pre-school series focused on play patterns, and Jonny Pops, a mixed live-action, stop motion and flash animation project.

ImaginAsian TV (iaTV) will launch a new anime block titled TMS Presents: Anime Classics on June 5 at 8:30a. The 90-minute weekday stripped a.m. block will include Japanese animation house TMS Entertainment’s classic anime series such as Orguss, Cat’s Eye Season 1, And Nobody’s Boy  Remi. The three series will air in Japanese with English subtitles.

The Magic Roundabout, popular stop-motion animated kid’s TV series, is rounding about once again under a new Nickelodeon deal that will result in a CG-animated remake of the series.  Produced by Films Action (France) and Silver Fox Films (UK), the new Magic Roundabout series will include 52×11′ episodes and will run on Nick Jr. in the UK.  Created by France’s Serge Danot in the early 1960s, where the series was known as Le Manege Enchante, The Magic Roundabout joined the BBC lineup several years later in 1965, after first being rejected by the broadcaster.  The English-language adaptation of the show was written and narrated by Eric Thompson, aka father of actress Emma Thompson.  In the 1990s the series ran for a short time on the UK’s Channel 4, and two years ago a CG-animated movie version of the series was produced staring a voice-cast that including Robbie Williams, Bill Highy, Joanna Lumley, Kylie Minogue and Sir Ian McKellan.

Buena Vista International Television has licensed Disney’s Mickey Mouse Clubhouse series on free TV to over 80 non-U.S. territories.  The latest licensees include the U.K.’s GMTV, Seven Network Australia, TVNZ New Zealand, TF1 France, Super RTL Germany, Italy’s RAI, TVE Spain, Channel One Russia, RTE Ireland, Fiji TV, Kids Central Singapore, TVB Pearl Hong Kong, TV3 Malaysia, and KBS Korea.  Buena Vista International Television-Asia Pacific also inked a multi-year VOD deal with ViDeOnline Communications Inc. as BVITV-AP’s first Hong Kong VOD agreement.  ViDeOnline will pick up current and library films from Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, and Miramax Films for rent on-demand via ViDeOnline’s O8Media internet platform.  It can also distribute Disney movies on demand to Hutchison broadband customers on a PPV and subscription basis.

Marathon and Chorion have partnered with France 3 to produce a new animated version of Famous Five. Disney Europe is also participating as part of the co-production team with Chorion, as announced at December 2006.  The first new season of Famous Five will comprise 26×22′ episodes and will focus on the kids of the original characters of the Chorion owned series.  The series is based on the Famous Five book series by Enid Blyton (Noddy, The Secret Seven), which was first published in the 1940s.

American Greetings Properties has partnered with Mike Young Productions & DQ Entertainment to create a new CGI animated series based on its greeting card property Twisted Whiskers.  The first cycle of the Twisted Whiskers animated series will include 26×30′ episodes and will be distributed by Taffy Entertainment.  American Greetings introduced the Twisted Whiskers greeting card line featuring twisted dogs and cats in 2001.  The line spurred merchandising deals that include a range of stationery, plush and car accessories, followed by a series of CGI shorts – directed by Bill Kopp – that ran online, and a line of e-cards.  Kopp will remain involved in overseeing the creative direction of the TV series.

Atlantyca Entertainment is partnering with 9 Story Entertainment and MoonScoop Productions to develop and co-produce the Geronimo Stilton animated series.  Based on the book series of the same name, which revolves around the adventures of author/newspaper editor Geronimo Stilton (an intellectual mouse), the first season will include 26×24′ episodes, and like the books will feature multiplatform content.  The series will be available for presales for MIPCOM 2007.  9 Story holds the TV and home video rights for English speaking territories, while Taffy, which distributes MoonScoop properties, takes distribution rights for French speaking territories.   Atlantyca retains rights in Italy and the rest of the world and will handle the North American distribution of the series with 9 Story.  The Geronimo Stilton book series comes from Italy where it is published by Edizioni Piemme (Mondadori Group), and is published in the US by Scholastic.  There are currently some 30+ Geronimo Stilton books, with new titles slated for release in the US summer and fall 2007.

VIZ Media has inked a licensing deal with a consortium including TV Tokyo Corporation and Shueisha Inc, for the new anime series Blue Dragon.  Under the deal Viz Media holds the TV, home video and non-video game merchandising rights for the new anime series, Blue Dragon, across the Americas, Europe and Oceania.  Produced by Studio Pierrot, The Blue Dragon anime series is based on the Microsoft Xbox 360 role playing game of the same name, and premiered on Japan’s TV Tokyo on April 7, 2007.  Developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator Final Fantasy), The Blue Dragon video game is slated for release in North America and Europe from August 2007.  VIZ Media will distribute and market Blue Dragon throughout Europe via VIZ Media Europe.

Zigby the Zebra is headed to TV in a new 3D animated series for preschoolers, under a co-production partnership between Greenpatch Productions (Australia), BIG Communications (Singapore) and Thunderbird Films (Canada).  Targeted to preschoolers 4-6-years-old, the initial order for the Zigby series includes 52×10′ episodes and is slated to bow on ABC (Australia) and Treehouse TV (Canada) in 2008.  Based on author Brian Paterson’s Zigby books, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, the Zigby animated series will be distributed internationally by EM.Entertainment GmbH.

Animation studios Xilam (France) and Zinkia (Spain) are introducing Shuriken the Movie (1×75′), a 2D animated movie, at MIPTV.  Based on the animated TV series The Shuriken School, the TV movie follows the characters on their summer vacation adventures.  Currently in production Shuriken the Movie will feature a blend of Japanese and European design and slated to be available in August 2007.  Xilam is handling worldwide distribution rights for the movie, excluding Spain, Italy and Latin America, which are being handled by Zinkia.

Breakthrough Animation has completed a licensing deal with Cartoon Network UK, for its 3D animated series Miss BG (short for Big Girl).   The network has acquired 26×30′ episodes of Miss BG for its preschool programming block Cartoonito, where it debuts May 24, 2007.  The series revolves around Miss BG, a precocious 8-year-old, who aims to educate her younger brother about the world, via her perspective of course.  Based on the French book series Gudule & Les Bebes, written by Fanny Joly and illustrated by Roser Capdevilla, Miss BG is a co-production by Ellipsanime, Breakthrough Animation, TVO, TFO (Canada) and France 5.

AB Distribution has inked new deals for the family-targeted live-action comedy series, Genie in the House (52 episodes) with Antena 3 (Spain), SIC (Portugal), Comedy TV (Russia), Italia Films (Middle East) and Happy TV (Serbia).  Genie in the House is produced by Moi j’aime la television/Helion Pictures for Nickelodeon UK and France’s Canal J.  Genie in the House follows the adventures of sisters who move into a new house, with their widower father, where they find an old lamp in the attic and the teenage genie, Adil.  French company Happy Audience is handling home video and DVD rights; they are also in Cannes looking for partners.

Nelvana Enterprises will distribute the animated series Babar through Azureus, Inc.‘s newly enhanced Vuze, a broadband aggregation and distribution platform.  All 78 episodes of the Babar TV series, as well as the feature-length films, Babar: King of the Elephants and Babar and Father Christmas, will be available to rent or download-to-own in multiple languages at www.vuze.com in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, the US, and Russia. The first two episodes will be available for free.

Singapore Technologies Electronics Ltd and Corus Entertainment Inc. signed a letter of intent under which its respective subsidiaries, ST Electronics (Training & Simulation Systems) and Nelvana Studios will co-produce a series of animated direct-to-video titles.  The first two projects slated for production under the deal are, Puff the Magic Dragon and Franklin the Turtle.  Puff the Magic Dragon is based on the hit folk song of the same name, while Franklin the Turtle is based on Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark’s books.  The first co-production launched as part of this venture was The Future is Wild, a 26×30 TV series produced for the US’ Discovery Kids and Canada’s Teletoon.

Harmony Gold has re-launched its Robotech brand.  It has already signed three new licensing and merchandising deals for the original Robotech animated series (85×30) with FUNimation Entertainment for the US and Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.  EXIM Licensing Group took the series for the Latin American territory while Empire International Merchandising Corporation has it for Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Additionally, four new distribution deals for the Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles (1×90, HD) film based on the series have been signed with more pending. They include theatrical, TV, and DVD rights to FUNimation Entertainment for the U.S. and Canada, EXIM Licensing Group for Latin America (all media rights), and Revelation Films for the UK and Ireland.  Madman Entertainment picked up the DVD rights only for Australia and New Zealand.

National Geographic Television International is in Cannes launching the new preschool series, mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies (52×11′ or 26×22′).  The series is a co-production of National Geographic Kids Entertainment, CBeebies and King Rollo Films.  New content available for license includes: Interactive Monkey Minutes (8×66 second interstitials), a mixed live action and animated segments designed to get kids involved with the show; Music Videos (8×3′) music videos with wraparound animation of Mama Mirabelle; Promos (52×15 second) individual episodic promos; and the forthcoming website www.mamamirabelle.com .

High School Musical: The Concert will travel through Latin America this May 2007.  The tour will make stops in where it will Buenos Aires, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Caracas, Monterrey, Mexico City and Guadalajara.  Like the US tour, members of the cast of Disney Channel’s TV movie High School Musical will appear on the concert tour performing songs from High School Musical and several cast members, Corbin Bleu, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale will perform songs from their solo albums.  Kenny Ortega, director/choreographer of the High School Musical movies, is the creative director for High School Musical: The Concert.

Shaftesbury Films named JTMG as the North American licensing and merchandising agency of record for its Life with Derek (52×30) series.  JTMG will launch a merchandising effort at Licensing International in NYC this June, with the primary focus on publishing, electronics, mobile, apparel, and accessories.

4Kids Entertainment Home Video and FUNimation Entertainment will release Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 1 Part 1 on DVD May 22.  The release features the first 12 episodes of the TV series, which premiered on 4Kids TV on Fox in fall 2003.  Noted illustrator Khary Randolph is creating cover art on the DVD.
