Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, April 18, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Time Warner is exploring the idea of reducing its 84% stake in Time Warner Cable to further invest in the internet, according to The Wall Street Journal. The worry is that cable will eventually become commoditized as more and more programming becomes available on the internet. The issue will be put before the board at an annual strategic review scheduled for next month.

Sprint and Suave are teaming to produce a web series about motherhood starring Leah Remini (King of Queens) that prompts real moms to share their stories. Their tales, which can be submitted online at inthemotherhood.com, will be incorporated into the scripts of the webisodes, premiering this week on the site hosted by MSN. The episodes are also available on suave.com and Sprint TV and will be promoted in People magazine and on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which will air clips of the show throughout May and June.
Fox Reality.com has created its first original made-for-the-web series, Nightclub Confessions. Viewers join clubgoers inside a soundproof booth as they spill their deepest, darkest secrets and desires. A total of thirty 8-10 minute webisodes begin on May 30, with the event culminating in a one-hour special on Fox Reality on June 30.
Comedian Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show, SNL) has signed on to produce a new 12-episode series on Turner’s SuperDeluxe.com. Derek & Simon: The Show revolves around real life pals Derek Waters and Simon Helberg as they chase women around Hollywood, with less than stellar results. The site will premiere a new episode each week, beginning Wednesday, May 16.
Si TV unveiled plans at its Upfront presentation to integrate user-generated content from its website in a new show it is launching later this year. Describing it as “YouTube done Si TV-style,” Home Page will feature user-submitted videos, animations and voting/community extensions with SiTV.com. The network is also planning to add more unique online content to its site this summer, focusing on entertainment (music, film, comedy, nightlife) and lifestyle (clothing, sneakers, cars, gadgets) categories.
The first chapter of “Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality Taste and Style” is being posted on BravoTV.com. Casting for a new reality series based on the book begins this week in New York. Check out yesterday’s Cynopsis for the casting call.
AOL held its first-ever upfront presentation for advertisers, introducing five major programming initiatives. “Ye Olde Shrek the Third Royal Tournament” will launch 25 games leading up to the third Shrek release. “Gold Rush Goes Hollywood” is a sequel to last year’s “Gold Rush,” featuring pop culture trivia questions for cash prizes. “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” allows users to share stories and videos of their hometowns. “Million Dollar Bill” gives viewers a chance to match serial numbers from dollar bills, with a chance to win $1 million on TV. “Iland,” hosted by Brooke Burns, asks users to recruit members from their social community to populate a desert island. Partners include DreamWorks Animation, Mark Burnett, Telepictures and Endemol.
Calling all college students! Big story out of MIP-TV in France yesterday – A collaboration between Bob Geldof‘s Ten Alps and producer/director John Maguire and the BBC and BBC Worldwide. The three will launch a multi-platform initiative with BBC Vision starting with a Dictionary of Man website looking to record “every human society on the planet.” The site will include a living record of movies, photos, anthropological histories, philosophies, theologies, economies, language, art, documented and personal accounts, and more from as many people in as many societies as they can worldwide.
GE and NBC Universal formed a $250 million equity fund to invest in media and technology companies with high growth potential, or that offer a strong strategic fit with the network’s ventures. The fund will focus on developing technologies and platforms that dovetail with NBCU’s advertising, wireless, digital content and international businesses. The fund’s first target is Adify, which is developing a new way to serve ads online.
CBS Corp. formed CBS Connections, a new cross-platform sales and marketing unit that will combine staff from CBS Entertainment, CBS News, CBS Interactive, CBS Sports, CBS Paramount Television, CBS Television Distribution, CSTV, Showtime, CBS Radio and CBS Outdoor. Between 35 and 45 percent of Slingbox customers use the device to create wireless TV networks within the home instead of using it to watch programs away from home, according to SlingMedia CEO Blake Krikorian. The Slingbox allows viewers to connect to their TVs, DVRs or video-on-demand systems remotely through a laptop. The company originally marketed it as a way for frequent travelers to keep up with their shows or sporting events in their home markets.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced the company’s on demand web storage service S3 surpassed 5 billion objects stored, up from 800 million in July of 2006. S3 handles the heavy lifting for many web start-ups on a pay-as-you-go basis. It charges 10 cents per CPU hour instead of a flat rate that proves to be prohibitively expensive for young companies.
Despite the hoopla over user collaboration, global executives are investing more in the automation and networking technologies of Web 2.0, according to a survey by The McKinsey Quarterly. Eighty percent of the more than 2,000 executives queried said they were investing or planning to invest in a range of web services, with collective intelligence applications (tapping into a group to solve problems) and peer-to-peer networking services leading the mix, followed by RSS, podcasts, wikis, blogs and mash-ups.

MSNBC.com, which set a traffic record on Monday with 15.3 million unique users in a single day, launched a blog devoted entirely to the Virginia Tech shooting. On the Scene features postings from four reporters on the ground in Blacksburg, who do a good job of adding texture and details of the tragedy that don’t come across in more straightforward reports. They explore the effect of the media on the town, good and bad, community reaction and close up stories that help visitors understand what’s going on. The blog also contains embedded video clips from several NBC sources.
