Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 16, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…
Disney XD is keeping the bro-mance going, ordering up a second season of Crash & Bernstein, the comedy about the antics of everyday kid Wyatt Bernstein and his surrogate brother, a puppet who just happened to have come to life–in a big, loud way. The series ranks among the network’s most popular series in Total Viewers and across target kid and boy demographics, and puppet Crash took center stage helping Disney chief creative officer Gary Marsh with emcee duties at the Disney Upfront last month in New York. Production will resume in July for a fall 2013 premiere. The series is produced by It’s A Laugh Productions and airs Mondays at 8:30 p.m.
Digi network Kabillion is headed for YouTube via a partnership with Maker Studios, already a mainstay on the platform with more than 2.5 billion monthly views and 165 million subscribers. The YouTube assault begins this week with the launch of Kabillion content on Maker’s Cartoonium channel. Additional Kabillion shows including Code Lyoko, Bobby’s World and Mix Master are due, and Kabillion is also ramping up its own YouTube.com/Kabillion presence with content like Tara Duncan, DaVincibles, Bunny Maloney, and Pet Alien. “As a truly digital enterprise, Maker is excited to align itself with more traditional media brands such as Kabillion,” said Andy Vick, GM, comedy entertainment, for Maker Studios.
Cartoon Network is adding a powerful cog to its Stop Bullying: Speak Up pro-social campaign with the premiere of The Bully Effect, an original half-hour documentary it co-produced with sister net CNN. The special, hosted by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, premieres Sunday, April 28, at 5:30 p.m. with a repeat at 8 p.m. It will be shown commercial-free and abridged for family co-viewing, with an introduction by network president Stuart Snyder and a live online follow-up Q&A for students, parents and educators with author and bullying prevention expert, Rosalind Wiseman.
Sprout will debut FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment’s Tree Fu Tom on April 22. The launch marks the first time the CG-animated series, a hit on CBeebies in the U.K., will be seen in the States. Set in an enchanted world called Treetopolis where movement creates magic, the show combines elements of action, and fantasy, coupled with unique interactive physical activity. In fact, the movements in Tree Fu Tom were designed by child development specialists to help stimulate the progression of physical activity in preschool children.
Hallmark Chanel embarks on a space odyssey for the latest original movie edition to the network’s Friday-night Walden Family Theater, developed by Walmart, P&G, Walden Media and ARC Entertainment. The movie Space Warriors, starring Mira Sorvino, Danny Glover and Dermot Mulroney, premieres at 8 p.m. May 31. Designed to woo families to the small screen, it’s about the son of a retired NASA astronaut who competes to win a seat on the next space shuttle, and provides an in-depth peak at Space Camp.
The first fruit of Cupcake Digital’s partnership with Discovery Communications drops today, loaded with Common Core State Standards material for kindergarten. Animal Planet’s Hide & Seek Pets features a gaggle of dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits and other domestic pets interacting in their native environments. Young learners can grasp skills that are part of new CCSS through prompts embedded in the app that engage them while they count, sort, trace, memorize and recognize shapes, numbers, letters and animal characteristics. The app is available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and Barnes & Noble for $3.99.

Trademark Collections Ltd. will begin producing purses, luggage, umbrellas and more based on preschool show Tickety Toc via a new deal with Zodiak Kids. It must be Strawberry season. AG Properties is expanding back-to-school merchandise themed around its Strawberry Shortcake brand in Asia and Australia. Additionally, to build on the animated series in Australia and New Zealand, AGP and licensing agent Merchantwise tapped The Entertainment Store to create a range of live events in malls, schools and other venues. Sister AG property Care Bears, which have generated $80 million in merch sales since debuting in Japan in 2007, is getting new apparel lines from Wakaba and Minoya through a deal with AGP and MindWorks Entertainment.
Om Nom and other stars of the hit game Cut the Rope will appear on pails of Kernels Popcorn sold at retail outlets across Canada this month, thanks to a new deal with game developer ZeptoLab and licensing agent Studio Licensing that includes a free Cut the Rope toy grab bag while supplies last. In related news, ITV Studios Global Entertainment and ZeptoLab UK have appointed agents for hit game Cut The Rope in the key markets of France, Central and Eastern Europe, the Nordic region and Israel. New partners are Lagardere Active TV Licensing & New Business, Plus Licens and Brand isReal.
GAMING
No time for nostalgia at Nintendo, which is shuttering its online services for its original Wii games. The move, which will see those online services dry up by June 28, is a strongest signal yet the company is pushing gamers to purchase latter incarnations Wii U and the tablet Wii incarnation. Nintendo reportedly will limit data exchange among connected Wii friends, exchanging of Miis on its Mii Channel, and data exchange within certain games.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Sticky Pictures’ animated series the Dukes of Broxstonia is debuting its third season, now in a longer seven-minute episode format, on Australia’s digital channel ABC3… Gruppo Alcuni just signed exclusive TV and DVD rights for the 52 new episodes of the 3D animated Pet Pals to Spectrum Film for Indonesia and Sri Lanka. The series has already been sold in several other countries such as Spain, Russia and the Baltic States… ITV Studios Global Entertainment and Warp Films today announced they have agreed a multi-year first look development deal for scripted television.

Sanghrajka will assist in driving licensing revenue, manage creative and product development and work closely with licensees, promotional partners and retailers. Brad Schwartz, former Fuse programming and MTV marketing exec, joins TV Guide Network as president of media and entertainment. Interim TV Guide president Dennis Miller takes on the new post of president of operations.
