Cynopsis: DIGITAL


Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Before Tim Robbins appealed to their compassion and human spirit, NAB President David Rehr urged broadcasters to embrace the challenges before them as they execute the DTV transition. He spoke of an “explosion of possibilities” that will result from the switchover in his last NAB conference keynote address before D-day on February 17, 2009. He said the NAB is working toward getting digital TV on multiple platforms and devices (345 million of them in all), which could result in an additional $2 billion a year in revenues by 2012 in mobile video alone. He touted NAB initiatives such as the Fastroad technology advocacy program and the Open Mobile Video Coalition. And he advised that broadcasters look to make the internet “part of our DNA.” To reassure those who feel like the digital world is passing them by, Rehr pointed to YouTube’s motto – “Broadcast Yourself.” “They use the word ‘broadcast.’ They obviously don’t think the word is outdated, or tired, or irrelevant. But the question is, do we?,” he asked.

Lifetime‘s upfront presentation included an ambitious slate of web 2.0 digital initiatives:

  •  Lifetime Digital is launching a new slate of more than 15 original broadband series including Hollywood Tails, Mommy Madness Street Doctors
  •  Lifetime is partnering with Glam Media to form a new vertical network of women-focused sites
  •  MyLifetime.com will add Dressupchallenge.com to its slate of casual games later this month, inviting users to create makeovers then enter them into contests for prizes
  •  A new movie mash-up tool is coming in early May allowing users to splice scenes together from different movies
  •  The site will roll out a new broadband video channel in June featuring full episodes of Lifetime originals and acquired series as well as full-length Lifetime movies
  •  MyLifetime.com will launch a new WAP site in April that will add video in June and offer advertisers interactive opportunities including text and mobile alerts

A couple of true war horses are finally making the jump to HD. The Oprah Winfrey Show will be produced in HD beginning with the 2008-09 fall premiere, becoming the first daytime production from Harpo to be broadcast in HD. CBS‘ granddaddy of competition reality shows (well this generation anyway) Survivor will also shoot using Sony’s XDCAM cameras, beginning with the start of its 17th season scheduled to premiere in the fall. Survivor joins American Idol, American Gladiators and Dancing with the Stars among primetime HD reality shows.
A&E signed a non-exclusive deal with The Library of Congress giving it access its vast archive for use on The History Channel, History International, History En Espanol, Military History Channel and History.com including documentary films, videos, documents and photographs. Programs created from the collection will be co-branded by History and the Library.
The Associated Press is testing a mobile news platform for a possible summer deployment that would feed national and local news to smart phone users. The Mobile News Network, made up so far of Advance, Hearst, Lee, McClatchy, MediaNews and Rust Communications, is designed to distribute multimedia news to iPhone users along with local and national advertising, split 50/50 between content providers and sellers. The AP also added a new syndication feature to its Online Video Network, allowing members to share video with other newspaper, TV and radio station sites in exchange for a share of the ad revenue.


Broadcast quality online video streaming enabler Move Networks raised an additional $46 million in Series C funding from Benchmark Capital, Cisco, Comcast Interactive Media, Televisa, Disney’s Steamboat Ventures and Hummer Winblad Venture Partners.
Multicast unveiled the latest version of its Vidego Live Flash video platform supporting turnkey live streaming using the Adobe Flash media encoder.
Local media web vendor Broadcast Interactive Media will produce a weekly series to complement the roll out of its YouNewsTV citizen journalist initiative, currently live in 50 local markets. The clip-style show can be contributed to from Revver.com and will be available for local on-air distribution from September, 2008.
Independent music library 5 Alarm Music has partnered with Soundminer to create an easily navigable online search engine to find, download, manage and store music for production applications.


Blockbuster secured the backing of activist investor and Blockbuster shareholder Carl Icahn to make an unsolicited offer to buy Circuit City for $1.35 billion in cash – a 54% premium over what it was worth as of Friday’s closing share price. Blockbuster, which began talks with the troubled chain two months ago, sees synergy between its digital media offerings and Circuit City’s electronic sell-through locations. For instance, Blockbuster digital kiosks could be placed within Circuit City stores, something tried by Napster on the music side.
ABC O&Os will continue to offer standard def feeds to cable operators after the Feb. 17th deadline as a service to its partners, eliminating the need to downconvert the signals, reports Multichannel News.
President John Fithian warned the movie business is headed for a day of reckoning over 3-D in his keynote address of the NAB Digital Cinema Summit covered in Variety. If studios and theater owners don’t settle their dispute over who’s going to pick up the tab for installing digital cinema systems, he said, high profile projects scheduled for 2009 release may be scuttled.
A wave of additional content companies announced support for Microsoft’s Silverlight video platform including Madison Square Garden Interactive, Tencent, Abertis Telecom, Terra Networks Operations, SBSi, MNet and Yahoo! JAPAN. Microsoft also unveiled the specs of Silverlight’s DRM solution PlayReady, supporting live and on-demand streaming and progressive video downloads.


Verizon selected AOL’s digital ad agency Platform A to manage both its web and mobile advertising inventory including ad serving, targeting and inventory management duties.
A new ad serving solution called AdShuffle was announced at the ad:tech show in San Francisco, offering real-time reporting and optimization as well as automated creative optimization.


Users are visiting online video sites slightly less often but are spending more time on them once they get there, Hitwise’s latest panel results suggest. The Hitwise Online Video category accounted for 1.09% of U.S. internet visits in March 2008, a decline of 7% compared to March of 2007, with YouTube increasing its share to over 73% of all online video traffic. Yet time spent on video sites increased 7% for the week ending April 5, 2008 from a year earlier. Hulu ranked #22 on this list, despite being available to the public for only half the month.

Mojo HD debuted the pilot of a web-exclusive technology series called The Circuit about the latest and greatest tech gadgets. Tech web shows are not new (other notables include TwitTV and GigaOM Show,) but this one is worth mentioning for a couple of reasons. Producers Creative Bubble went out and recruited writers who understand the snappy, pithy medium who had worked for outlets such as The Onion and Gizmodo. (Host Deepak Ananthapadmanabha – no, that’s not a joke – reads the news with an interesting detachment, like he’s spent just a little too much time geeking out.) The weekly show also showcases the new Adobe Flash 9 video player delivered by Akamai in the crisp H.264 (mpeg-4) format.
Correction: Grace Randolph and Liza de Guia are not co-stars of Michael Somerville’s new “Love, Somerville” show on TitanTV. They’re busy with their own shows TitanShowbiz, and TitanGreens.
