The Topps Company has hired Doug Kruep as VP, GM Sports & Entertainment, reporting directly to CEO and President Ryan O’Hara.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

An unintended consequence of the success of devices such as the iPad is the rise in the theft of copyrighted books; thousands of users can search for and download copies of best sellers before a publisher’s lawyer can boot up their computer to draft a removal letter. A new automated digital copyright protection service for publishers dubbed Attributor launches this morning with a proactive approach toward preventing the downloading illegal content. Attributor’s “Guardian” service is designed to identify copyright-protected works on content sharing sites such as RapidShare and deliver a customized message to users before they access the work. The message can include links to the legit content site with a discount attached to help prod users into doing the right thing. Attributor CEO Matt Robinson, a former attorney experienced dealing with copyright issues, says one of the system’s strengths is that it removes the latency between verification and removal of pirated content. “Rights holders and content platforms are at each other’s throats because the (digital copyright) system is so slow and cumbersome – this is the first tool to bridge the gap between rights holders and download sites,” he said.
