Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution…Redefining Television
Cynopsis
09/07/06
Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 7, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
The results are in and Katie Couric’s debut on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric delivered 13.59 million total viewers, making the newscast #1 for the night. CBS’ Evening News brought in nearly twice as many viewers compared to NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams at 7.76 million viewers and ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson at 7.58 million viewers. Among A25-54, CBS averaged a 3.9 rating Tuesday night, while NBC and ABC each finished with a 2.3 rating.
Tonight’s Premieres:
Fox: ’til Death at 8p, Happy Hour at 830p
MGM Worldwide Television Distribution Group will bring a bunch of new properties to the market. The films include Casino Royale, Cutting Edge 3, Into the Blue 2, Legally Blonde 3, Rocky Balboa (the final Rocky movie), Species 4 and WarGames 2. With that said, also know that MGM has restructured its MGM Worldwide Television Distribution Group and has moved Jim Packer into the position of President. He will continue his leadership role involving global television distribution as well as U.S. barter sales and syndication and various emerging forms of television programming distribution worldwide. Jim was previously EVP and will now report to MGM’s COO, Rick Sands. Additionally, MGM Worldwide Television Distribution Group has upped Joe Patrick to EVP/North America based in Los Angeles, and Mary Ann Pasante to SVP/Latin America Sales based in Atlanta.
TNT’s series The Closer ended its second season with a finale that drew in 7.6 million total viewers. The series, starring Kyra Sedgwick, will return in December with a two-hour special in December and it has also been renewed for a third season which will premiere next summer.
ABC has stirred up controversy over its upcoming miniseries The Path to 9/11 as the network has received more than 25,000 letters asking for alleged inaccuracies to be corrected or to not air the special. This protest was launched yesterday by ThinkProgress.org by the Center for American Progress Action Fund. A statement from ABC, not specifically to the influx of all these letters, but regarding the special itself, reads: “The Path to 9/11 is a dramatization, not a documentary, drawn from a variety of sources, including the 9/11 commission report, other published materials and from personal interviews. The events that lead to 9/11 originally sparked great debate, so it’s not surprising that a movie surrounding those events has revived the debate. The attacks were a pivotal moment in our history that should never be forgotten and it’s fitting that the discussion continues.” The miniseries airs this Sunday and Monday nights, commercial free.
AmericanLife TV Network has acquired the U.S. rights to air the reality series Til Debt Do U$ Part. The 39-episode series will premiere September 17 at 8p, then will air Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 130p and again at 6p. The show teaches married couples how to deal with their finances and how to avoid marital money woes. Produced by the Canadian company Frantic Films, it concurrently airs on the Life Network of Canada.
As of today at 1pm, In2TV will now offer the 1960’s comedy Gilligan’s Island and the more recent TBS series The Real Gilligan’s Island, in addition to full-length Godzilla movies such as Godzilla Raids Again from 1955. In2TV is a free online service from AOL that showcases television series and films on various channels such as Vintage TV, Get Real TV and Heroes & Horror TV, from the shows from the Warner Bros. library.
Cynopsis note: MyNetwork TV launched on Tuesday night with its two telenovelas – Desire and Fashion House. Nielsen is reporting the ratings for these as strip series on a weekly basis. As you know, we prefer to report on national numbers versus metered market overnights because of the added perspective the numbers provide, and therefore will wait for Nielsen to release the numbers next Thursday.
Today’s installment of CBS’ Guiding Light is the soap opera’s 15,000th television episode. The show, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, is the longest running program in broadcast history as it first debuted in 1937 as a 15-minute radio serial, The Guiding Light, then switched over to television on June 30, 1952. Created by Irna Phillips, the show continues to be produced by Procter & Gamble.
Having trouble with your Cynopsis subscription today? We had a major computer snafu late Wednesday afternoon, resulting in wiping the subscriber list. Ouch. While the list is backed up regularly – like flossing, a pain in the neck, but necessary – those of you who subscribed for the first time in the last 24 hours will not receive today’s edition and some others may receive today’s even tho you’ve unsubscribed. No, we’re not trying to convert you back to subscribers … If either scenario applies to you or a colleague, perhaps you’d be good enough to pass on this information: Please go to www.cynopsis.com, hover your mouse over the Subscribe tab, and both the Subscribe and Unsubscribe options appear in the drop down menu. From there you will be able to re-subscribe, or unsubscribe as the case may be. Thank you for your patience.
A new, live reality series project is in the creative development stage through an agreement between the Fox Reality network and Indie TV, Inc. Your Instant Reality will combine the interactive online participation, such as text messaging, real-time polling and blogs, with a linear TV show. The weekly, two-hour hosted show will also feature submitted viewer video footage for air, and encourage viewers to take part in the various challenges and voting on the results. Executive producers for the project are Mark Rowland, executive producer of Supernanny and Brat Camp, and Jason George, former CEO of Endemol’s digital production company Victoria Real.
FX has ordered up 13 episodes of a new drama project called Riches, starring the insatiable Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver, about a family of con artists. If this sounds vaguely familiar, it’s probably because this show was originally titled Low Life.
Lifetime‘s drama pilot Army Wives from Touchstone TV has cast Kim Delaney to star, along with Brigid Brannagh. Previously cast was Sally Pressman, whose character is a single mom from the wrong side of town, marries a soldier and moves onto the army base.
Casting Call: A new documentary series, produced by Ricochet Television (producers of ABC’s Supernanny), will chronicle the lives of families living in New York City. This “day in the life” type show is looking for successful, dynamic people raising children in Manhattan. Interested families can call 1-877-NANNY-TIME or send an email to mail@ricochettelevision.com. Include each family member’s name and age, your address and phone number, occupations, hobbies, a brief description of your family and the different types of activities you like to do as a family.
Leonard J. Tacconi has been appointed President of Discovery Communications, Inc.’s Discovery Health Media Enterprises. He will lead all areas of strategic growth and expansion for the company’s new multiplatform healthcare media division which includes Discovery Health Channel, FitTV, discoveryhealth.com, Discovery Health’s Continuing Medical Education business and its new VOD service called Discovery Health On-Call.
David Letterman is reportedly on the verge of signing on for an additional 4 year term with CBS. That extension will take him through the 2009-10 season.
Nancy O’Dell has signed with Access Hollywood to continue co-anchoring the syndicated newsmagazine for an additional five years.
Chrysse Spathas has been upped to VP/East Coast, Clearance and Standards for ABC Broadcast Standards and Practices. This promotion is effective immediately and she reports to Olivia Cohen-Cutler, SVP, ABC Broadcast Standards and Practices. Chrysse’s new role has her managing the Broadcast Standards and Practices’ New York staff and operations.
Amy Pascal has been promoted to Co-Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and re-upped her deal with the movie studio through 2011. She will serve as Co-Chairman to Michael Lynton’s role as Chairman/CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Amy will also maintain her previous title as Chairman of Sony’s Motion Picture Group and will co-report with Lynton to Sir Howard Stringer CEO, Sony Corporation. Lynton will continue to serve as Chairman and CEO, Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Sundance Channel has hired Kimberly Gabelmann as VP/Branded Entertainment and Sponsorship. Based in New York, Kimberly will be involved with the development of all integrated sponsorship sales and branded entertainment efforts for the various network platforms. She reports to Kirk Iwanowski, EVP/Marketing, Branded Entertainment and Sponsorship.
John Mafoutsis has been elevated to SVP/Ad Sales for MTV Networks Latin America, where he will supervise ad sales, trade marketing and traffic operations for MTV, Nickelodeon/Nick@Nite and VH1 and the company’s digital products offered through broadband, wireless and online in that region. John will report to Pierluigi Gazzolo, Managing Director.
First Look Studios has added Stuart Ford as President/First Look International and Ken DuBow as President/First Look Television. Both appointments are effective immediately.
Roxanne Lettman has joined CBS Paramount International Television as Director/International Sales and Production. Previously, she was with Sony Pictures Television.

IN RE: UPCOMING SEASON OF SURVIVOR
As an African American woman who loves reality tv and who does not in any way deny the existence of racism, I think a bigger issue is being overlooked. The reason most people I know are excited about the new season of Survivor is because they will finally be included. Since the inception of this and many other reality shows–there is a primarily white group and a token black, asian or latino, who becomes marginalized and usually has to defend actions that are usually cultural (like tone of voice, behavior when angry etc.) It will be a relief to have some COLOR on the show. Not just tokens. I have no doubt that each participant will represent themselves well, but oh what a relief to not have to pretend that race ISN’T an issue when we interact socially. Racial dynamics exist everyday in our workplaces primarily and most white people aren’t aware of it because they do not have to make cultural adjustments. It will be nice to see a rainbow of people on the show instead of a token here or there. It will be fantastic to show that just because 2 people are black or asian doesn’t mean they will all behave alike or have the same attitudes or opinions. This is shown everyday on reality shows with white participants being allowed to show a variety of personalities and attitudes just by the very fact that there is more than one of them on the show.

The publicity he’s getting for the racial theme of Survivor has given the show an incredible amount of FREE publicity. As a producer what more could you ask for? Let’s be real here, at the end of the day it’s a television show. If the media doesn’t jump all over the racial issue it would be no big deal. Television shows deal with sensitive subjects all the time. It’s the producer who comes up with a way of getting people to react that rises to the top. That’s why Mark is where he is.

The thing is…even if you win, you lose. This version does nothing but enforce racial stereotypes to middle America. People will perceive human failures as racial failures. I actually didn’t think reality tv could sink any lower.

IN RE: CBS AFFILIATES CHOOSING NOT TO AIR 9/11 SPECIAL
I would like to comment on the American Family Association’s plan to bombard the FCC with complaints about CBS airing the award-winning 9/11 documentary on September 10. The AFA says the documentary contains profanity and that CBS is deliberately breaking the law. Several affiliates have already decided not to air the documentary or push it to a later time slot for fear of facing fines.

My CBS affiliate is airing the documentary, and I have thanked them for it. I would like to urge all Cynopsis subscribers to contact their CBS affiliates and ask them to air this documentary. Yes, it’s painful, it’s heart-wrenching, and it contains profanity. But the profanity is within context, and I think we all uttered a few profanities ourselves as we were riveted to the TV that day.
