Tonight’s Premieres:

~ MORE STUFF ~

The CW’s two-hour series debut of 90210 reached a high-water mark as the highest rated telecast of a scripted show for the network. Ratings results from Tuesday at 8-10p include a 3.0/9 among A18-34; 4.3/12 with W18-34; 2.6/7 among A18-49 and a 3.6/9 with W18-49. An encore of this premiere episode airs tonight at 8p.

Media Rights Capital (MRC) which will program Sunday nights for The CW this fall announced they will now debut the new slate of programs October 5. The programs, including 4Real, In Harm’s Way, Valentine and Easy Money, were originally scheduled to begin September 21 which would have put them up against the Emmy Awards that night. MRC also has Surviving Suburbia which is scheduled to premiere November 2.

Television audience estimate results from Tuesday, night two of the 2008 Republican National Convention per Nielsen include a combined total viewer number of 21.5 million over six networks offering live coverage from approximately 10-11p: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX News Channel and MSNBC. The combined total among A18-49 viewers was 7.2 million. Nielsen did not release numbers from night one of the RNC since coverage was truncated due to Hurricane Gustav.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The final results for the week of August 25, 2008:
NBC: 7.79 million total viewers and 2.0/8 A25-54
ABC: 7.10 million total viewers and 1.8/7 A25-54
CBS: 5.40 million total viewers and 1.4/5 A25-54

Gannett purchased another 10% ownership stake in CareerBuilder, the online job site, from Tribune Company for $135 million. With this deal in place, Gannett now owns 50.8% controlling interest in CareerBuilder while Tribune now has 30.8%, The McClatchy Company has 14.4% and Microsoft Corp. has 4%.

Liberty Media Corp will slide its shares in the satellite TV provider DirecTV Group as well as other assets into the publicly-traded company called Liberty Entertainment Group SA. Liberty has a 50% stake in DirecTV.

To correspond with ABC’s 3-night premiere of Dancing with the Stars beginning on September 22, the September 15 issue of TV Guide magazine will include ten numbered judges paddles filled with photos from past seasons and trivia from the competition show along with scorecards mailed to 100,000 subscribers in New York and Los Angeles.

Animator Bill Melendez, 91, died Tuesday in Santa Monica. Bill’s work included being the only animator allowed by Charles M. Schulz to take the Peanuts characters from print to television in such classics as A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966). In total, Bill worked on more than 63 30m Peanuts specials, five one-hour specials, four films and numerous commercials. He also animated the TV specials Garfield on the Town and Cathy which earned him an Emmy in 1987 for outstanding animated program shared with three others. Bill is survived by his wife, Helen, two sons, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Donations can be made to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Ted Danson captured a lead role in HBO’s comedy pilot Bored to Death, according to THR. Ted will portray a magazine editor who is friend and advisor to lead character Jonathan Ames, a writer who along with an alcohol addiction pretends to be a private detective from his novels. Ted will also appear in FX’s Damages for at least three episodes during the series’ second season.

NBC approved a director-contingent pilot order for Lost in the ’80s, a 60m project from Bob Brush (The Wonder Years), per THR. The pilot, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Tantamount, is meant to be similar in tone to The Wonder Years, set 20 years later. Bob Brush will executive produce along with Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum and Mitch Hurwitz of Tantamount.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The times they are a changin’. Political activists are utilizing web 2.0 techniques to get their voices heard, posting videos and stories documenting clashes between St. Paul police and RNC protestors. Groups such as online citizen journalist cooperative The Uptake are streaming raw and editing live feeds of violent clashes in which police launch tear gas grenades into the crowd. Protestors just arriving to the scene are turning to Twitter to coordinate marches. Meanwhile DemocracyNow.org has issued a call to action to its viewers to help convince the Ramsey County Attorney office to drop charges against journalists who have been arrested during the protests, including DemocracyNow’s own host Amy Goodman.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: 4Kids Entertainment has unwrapped the lineups for its two 2008-9 Saturday morning broadcast TV programming blocks, 4KidsTV block Fox and TheCW4Kids block on The CW, both of which bow Saturday, September 13.  4Kids Entertainment also supports their on-air efforts with corresponding interactive websites for both blocks at www.cw4kids.com and www.4kids.tv that include series episodes on demand, show/character information, branded show areas, a range of activities, and games. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: MGM Networks inked a whole host of new deals with Eastern European cable and satellite operators. The MGM Channel in Serbia launched on various platforms, including the Kopernikus Technology and K.D.S. Novi Sud cable operators and the Telekom Serbia IPTV platform. In Serbia, the network will also be broadcast with Serbian subtitles (Cyrillic alphabet).  In August, Albania’s Digitalb multichannel platform debuted The MGM Channel on its Digitalb DTH service as did operator Cabletel in Macedonia. Saturday – A18-49 Analysis:  ABC scored a winning Saturday night with 1.9/7 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC kicked off its college football match-ups with a victorious double-header: at 8p ABC posted a 1.7/7 followed by a 2.1/7 during 9p. At 10p ratings declined slightly for ABC yet the network still won the hour with a 2.0/6.

During 9p, FOX’s second hour of Prison Break did best at 2.8/7, while the season premiere of The CW’s One Tree Hill came in fifth at 1.7/4. Then at 10p when coverage for the broadcast networks became scrambled due to no planned RNC coverage, UNIV won with Cristina at 1.2/3.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

JoAnn Alfano moves to Lifetime Networks as EVP/Entertainment based in the company’s Los Angeles office, effective immediately. JoAnn joins Lifetime from NBC where she developed such shows as Will & Grace, Scrubs and Ed among others. She also served as executive producer of 30 Rock and was president of her own production company, TV Tray Entertainment. In her new position, JoAnn will be in charge of the programming and scheduling for Lifetime Television and Lifetime Movie Network in addition to Lifetime Real Women.

Edgar Villalpando joined ActiveVideo Networks, a media company that integrates TV with online content and interactive components, as SVP/Marketing to lead all marketing efforts for ActiveVideo.

Scripps Networks tapped Barbara Grobicki as Director/Ad Sales Marketing, HGTV based in Knoxville and Sandy Moussapour as Director/Ad Sales Marketing, DIY Network based in New York. For their respective networks, both will create and execute added-value sales promotions for national advertisers, sales collateral materials, promotion/sponsorship efforts and promotional events.

CBS Films appointed Bob Kaplowitz as SVP/GSM to supervise the unit’s sales efforts. Bob will report to Steven Friedlander, head of CBS Films’ domestic theatrical distribution.
