Yesterday Amazon unveiled the Kindle Fire, a seven-inch tablet that pulls together all of Amazon’s media services from the cloud, including but not limited to Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s MP3 music store, Kindle books and the Android App Store. Priced at $199, that’s $300 below the cheapest available iPad with which it seeks to directly compete, the tablet will be Wi-Fi only and will come with a 30-day free trial for Amazon Prime, the company’s own streaming service. While it will ship on November 15, the Fire can be pre-ordered as early as yesterday. Not to be outdone by themselves with such a big announcement, Amazon also unveiled a new line of Kindle tablet products that are priced as low as $79. The catch? The tablets will come with advertising. If you want ad-free versions of the devices, you’ll have to shell out $30 to $40 more.
 
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

With the season premiere of its popular TV show Psych around the corner, USA Network is launching the #HashTagKiller social game that will allow fans to engage with characters from the show as they try to solve a murder mystery. The game will use Facebook’s Open Graph technology to integrate the “whodunit” experience with the social media site. The game/story will take place over seven weeks leading up to the season premiere.
 
Wanting to turn around its fledgling entertainment site Cambio, AOL has tapped the services of big name producers from Hollywood to create original web series intended for the coveted teens and young adult audiences. Mark Burnett, reality TV producer, and McG, director of the Charlie’s Angels movies and Terminator: Salvation, will have production budgets comparable to primetime network TV shows. [Via LA Times]
 
In an effort to sell more magazine subscriptions, Sports Illustrated is turning to the popular “Need for Speed” racing game from Electronic Arts. The magazine and game developer will insert a couple of SI swimsuit models and billboards promoting the magazine into the game. In turn, SI will promote a special offer from both companies that offers the video game, a 6-month subscription the magazine, its app editions and a DVD about the making of the game for $49.95 – that’s $10 less than the retain price of the game alone. Continuing the process of cleaning up its brand image since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill last year, BP is producing a new short video series on YouTube, according to a reported by ClickZ. The eight videos that have been released to-date have portrayed Gulf Coast lifestyles in the on-going effort to revitalize Gulf Coast tourism. The “My Gulf” initiative will total 28 episodes and also includes display ads on YouTube, 60 second TV spots and TV ads.
 
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

Internet ad revenue has risen 23.2%, to a record $14.9 billion, in the first half of 2011, according to data from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers. This doubles the rate of growth year-over-year from last year, which saw an 11.3% over 2009. Furthermore, display advertising led the pack in the first half of 2011 with a total of $5.5 billion in revenue, an increase of 27.1%.
 
Google
, Facebook and Yahoo! are all set to have major presences during Advertising Week in New York next week, says The New York Times. All three companies, along with Apple, have made significant expansions to their office spaces in New York since 2010 as the city has become the home for the tech giants’ marketing and sales divisions.
 
SpotXchange, Inc. will adopt the “Ad Choices” icon, the symbol for the Digital Advertising Alliance’s Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising, into directly-served in-stream video ad campaigns on the video ad exchange’s ad player.
 
AdoTube
released its latest Q2 Format Index, which takes a look at the usage and effectiveness of the company’s in-stream ad formats along with ad verticals. It found that 84% of people who chose AdoTube’s “Ad Selector” pre-roll ads watched the ads to completion. Other interesting findings include:

  • Almost 60% of all ads that are served are video ads.
  • Interactive Overlays are up by 10%.
  • Average click-through rates rose to 2.25%, an increase of 20%.

 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

Microsoft and Samsung have signed a cross-licensing agreement that will give Microsoft royalty revenue for every Android smartphone and tablet that Samsung sells, following a similar deal Redmond made with HTC. Therefore, it will give Microsoft licensing agreements for over half of all Android phones being sold in the U.S. The deal also includes collaboration between Microsoft and Samsung for the investment and continued development of Windows Phones.
 
Chinese social media site Renren is slated to acquire online video sharing site 56.com for $80 million. Called the “Facebook of China” according to Reuters, Renren debuted in the U.S. market just this year.
 
 

  ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

The Digital Place-based Advertising Association announced that advertising revenue for the digital place-based sector grew by 16.1% in the first half of 2011 compared to the same time period in 2010. This continued growth follows a strong 2010 in which the sector saw a growth rate of 25% to the amount of $1.1 billion. Here’s the list of growth rates for selected relevant sectors:

According to a Point Topic analysis, IPTV subscriptions will reach 60 million subscribers in the European Union by 2020. The firm also notes that cost, availability and the existence of competitive TV delivery services from local markets have proven to be barriers to greater IPTV adoption in the European Union.
 
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Skype unveiled a couple of new features with the recent release of its app upgrade. The iPhone update includes a feature that minimizes the shakiness of outgoing video chat calls when using the phone’s rear camera. The upgrade also offers Bluetooth support, something Skype says was “long requested by our users.” However, in the bad news category, you will now have to pay Skype Credits if you want access to an ad-free version of the app.
 
Steinway has launched an iPad app that teaches beginners how to play the piano; offers interactive sheet music; and provides a built-in sheet music store for users to download free and premium sheet music for a variety of genres ranging from classical to hip hop.
