Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 27, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.
NBC Universal has added its 26 O&O NBC and Telemundo Network stations to its ban on running commercials for unhealthy foods during kids programming. Those stations will cease taking such ads as of June 1, 2008. The move comes on the heals of NBC’s pledge last month to no longer run junk food ads during qubo, its three-hour Saturday morning kids programming block. ION Media Networks provides the qubo block to NBC and Telemundo, as well as overseeing ad sales for those blocks.
Activision, Inc jumps into the racing genre market with the acquisition of Bizarre Creations, the UK-based video game developer that is noted for its racing games including the Project Gotham Racing franchise for Xbox consoles. The racing video game genre generates $1.4 billion, the fourth most popular genre representing 10+% of the video game market worldwide. Under the deal, Bizarre Creations’ management team and employees remain with the company. Activision expects that its first game from Bizarre Creations will be released after fiscal year 2009. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Hollywood Records recording artists, The Jonas Brothers, Kevin (19), Joseph (18) and Nick (15), will star in Disney Channel’s new spy-comedy series, J.O.N.A.S. Slated to begin production in early next year, J.O.N.A.S. will bow on the channel in 2008. Additionally, the brothers’ will star in Camp Rock, a Disney Channel Original Movie currently in production in Toronto, as well as a TV special Jonas Brothers in Concert, on Saturday, October 6 at 8p.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Get ready … Disney Channel US will air High School Musical and High School Musical 2 back-to-back on one night this Sunday, September 30, 6-10p. In other HSM news, America Forces Network will air HSM, followed by the premieres of HSM2 and the HSM2 Sing-Along, on Friday October 5, at 5p, 7p and 9p respectively.
qubo has picked up the US TV rights to the 3D animated series Miss BG from Breakthrough Entertainment. Under the agreement qubo acquires 52×30 minute episodes of Miss BG (short for big girl) as well as 52 minutes of Miss BG multi-platform short-form programming in English and Spanish. Initially premiere on the qubo digital channel, there are also plans to rollout Miss BG across its other platforms. Miss BG is based on the French book series Gudule & Les Bebes, written by Fanny Joly and illustrated by Roser Capdevilla. The series is a co-production of Ellipsanime, Breakthrough Animation, TVO, TFO (Canada) and France 5.
The preschool music-based series Mustard Pancakes is set to join the Ion Television lineup on Friday, October 12, 2007. Universal Music and Video Distribution recently completed a DVD and music CD deal for the series. Mustard Pancakes previously aired on public television stations.
Cartoon Network UK has picked up the option for a third season of Skatoony, the game show hosted by two animated characters and featuring real kid contestants. Season three will include 13×30 additional episodes, which will bring the total to number of episodes to 39. Season two is slated to debut on Cartoon Network UK tomorrow, September 28, 2007. The network produces the series animation in-house in London, with Talent Television continuing to manage the live action elements of the program. Under a recent deal, Target Entertainment represents the international format rights to the property. Skatoony is also available on Top Up TV Anytime, BT Vision, Sky Anytime, Virgin Central, and Tiscali TV on-demand 310.
Moi j’aime la television/Helion Pictures’ family aimed live action series Genie in the House, including a second season of 26×30 new episodes (for a total of 52×30), will be available to buyers at MIPCOM 2007 through AD Distribution. A Nickelodeon UK and Canal J (France) commission, the second season of Genie in the House is currently in production and slated to be available for November 2007. AD Distribution recently completed a raft of international sales for the series including: RTBF (Belgium); SIC (Portugal), Antena 3 (Spain); MNet (Africa), and CTC Network (Russia and CIS).
Nelvana Enterprises showcases the mixed 2D/3D animated series Z-Squad (26×24 min) for international buyers next month in Cannes. Produced by Enemes, Z-Squad airs in Korea on Cartoon Network, SBS, CHAMP, and ANI ONE. The series will also join the lineup of KT IPTV also in Korea. Nelvana handles distribution of Z-Squad outside of Asia. Aimed at K8-12 series revolves around three ordinary schoolgirls turned superheroes, and their cuddly alien counterparts, the Zoots, as they battle to save the earth against the bumbling bad guys.
Kaiser Permanente is launching an online game that teaches kids to eat healthier foods, be more active and manage how much time they spend in front of the computer and television. Scholastic Inc. is distributing the game and supplementary learning materials on September 28 to more than 5,000 public schools across the country. ( www.kp.org/amazingfooddetective )
Animation Collective, an indie producer of kids programming, heads to MIPCOM with a full slate of shows including these two:
- Three Delivery (26×22 min & 11×2 min) aimed at kids/tweens 6-14, the series follows three teens, who are also heroes skilled in Kung Fu, that work at a Chinese restaurant and have been training to stop an ancient evil apprentice.
- HTDT (52×11 min) – All the king’s men couldn’t get Humpty Dumpty (read HTDT) back together again, but using a little bio-nuclear physics Dr. Kizami Miyazaki did. Once together, HTDT with a group of new friends thwarts the plans of those that would destroy the kingdom. The show is targeted to K6-11.
Casting : If you are in the Tampa Bay, Florida area this Saturday, September 29, and you are either a young girl (six or seven years old/Caucasian) or know of one, you might consider heading over to The Patel Conservatory at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center between, 9a-12p, where Ellen Jacoby Casting Int’l will be holding an open casting call for the title character in the upcoming feature film Eloise. Additionally, they are also casting for the role of Jean Luc, a young French boy (Caucasian) who speaks French and speaks English with a French accent. MARKETING/LICENSING
In other Activision news, the publisher has released the new racing game, Hot Wheels: Beat That!, for Xbox 360,Wii, PS2, DS and PC. Based on Mattel’s Hot Wheels brand the game includes multiplayer modes, 12 racing courses, and 4 battle arenas. The game carries an ESRB rating of E for Everyone.
Entertainment Rights enters into a multi-year partnership with Duo Entertainment to produce live events for the Basil Brush property. Previously ER and Duo teamed to produce the Basil Brush live tour theater, The Fox Factor (2006/07), and other customized show for theme parks. This month ER and Duo launch the new UK tour, Basil of the Caribbean, which will be followed in 2008 by Pantomimes. A new season of The Basil Brush Show (13 episodes) began running on CBBC earlier this month, with repeats on BBC1.
The Giddy Gander Company grants Crossroads Designs the licensing rights to develop and produce apparel and headwear based on the preschool TV series The Wumblers.
